Religion
I've come out of retirement to comment on about Bill Maher's movie Religiosity or something like that. He stated something to the effect that most religious people are stupid. I partially agree with him, but in this sense. Most mainstream people make statements out of ignorance, including religious people. However, look at who he is interviewing. He is not interviewing noted theologians, priests, bishops, pastors.

Of course in the mainstream people always say what the feel instead of what they can prove. They always lack the empirical evidence. For instance when it come to voting for OBAMA, all I hear is because he wants to change and because he is black and they want to help him make history. They don;t talk about his voting record or his accomplishments.

Faith does not oppose reason, and when people think that is does it is because they are taking their evidence out of context.

For instance, Atheist. They claim they do not believe in God because God cannot be proven. It is like a kaleidoscope, if you only look at one prism and color, you miss out on the entire content of the kaleidoscope. Take all information and form your own opinion. Of course an atheist who solely trusts science is going to say that, if they don't believe in the supernatural or mysticism, same as the fundamentalist who takes the bible literally and does not understand that the bible is a book of faith, not solely history. There are many literary devices going on in the bible. You have to take it on faith, and if an atheist says he does not have faith he is full of crap. He has faith that when he gets in his car, it will start. He has faith that when he gets to a stop light, most people will obey the rules of the road, or he would never get in his car in the first place.

So, instead of making this a blog about attacking, lets have an open discussion before pegging all religious people as zealots and nuts. There are very articulate and learned people who are scientists, politicians, teachers, and journalist. There are even priests who are scientist in the field of stem cell research (skin cell, not stem cell). Those are the people that need to address the religious attacks and questions you may have, instead of assuming that all religious people have faith without reason.

So my new blog will be Faith and Reason. Please ask me questions about the Catholic Church and its teachings. I will explain any misconception or stereotypes, or answer genuine questions. There is just to much division and this is my way of at least shedding some light and educating people, not judging and things of that nature.

Thank you for taking the time out to answer my question. I am not a catholic, so my knowledge of the faith is limited and learned, not life experiences. As for Mr. Maher, I do not understand how someone can say the things he says and still have his job. Is he any different than Don Imus, Rush Limbaugh or Jimmy the greek? I lean on my beliefs and know that the church and Christian faith will face persecution, and we as believers in our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, must stand strong and persevere. I pray that Mr. Maher and all lost individuals will find the lord while he may be found. Thank you for listening(reading) and may God bless all. Even the lost and dying unbeliever.
To add to my long winded answer, many Catholics panic over the low turn out, but I don't because this has happened before. The church, through history, has had its struggles, but it always rebounds and achieves greatness because of the strong faith of its people.

These struggles are nothing new. Membership is low, but conversions are not. The church is on the upswing, especially with the youth. Just look at World Youth Day, plus more and Catholics are trying to go back to their liturgical roots. For example more Catholics are asking for the Traditional Tridentine mass. (High Mass in Latin) Just based on statistics and converts, the church has a bright future, even though we have some recent down times.

That is a great question because I am reading a book called "The Great Facade: Vatican II and the Regime of Novelty in The Roman Catholic Church."

There is a battle in the church between a section of Catholics known as "Neo-Catholics," or sometimes "Cafeteria Catholics, and "Traditionalists." This has been an on going struggle since Vatican II. The Vatican at that time decided to change many pastoral issues such as the liturgy (mass) in order to adapt to the modern world to keep modern Catholics in and make it appealing to Protestants.

It is this mentality that has the Vatican on the fence. Cardinal Ratzinger, (Now Pope Benedict XVI) was very conservative. This is my theory, based on recent pontificate history, on some issues (The Current pope) he has put his foot down, but because John Paul the II establish a more mainstream friendly Vatican environment, I feel like Pope Benedict is trying to be more diplomatic, instead of following the great examples of such Great Reformers such as St. Gregory, Pius X, XI, XII, who warned of how if leaders of the church relaxed on certain issues, especially when it came to the liturgy, that these things would occur.

I talked to a friend of mine a couple of years ago, and he is a very orthodox Catholic, and he was going to become a priest and I asked him why he passed because he is such a brilliant Theologian. He basically said that he could not bring himself to be a priest in a Post-Vatican II world. He said that he felt the Vatican has needed serious reform, that they are too many liberals in the college of Cardinals, that lead to many of these problems.

To the church's credit, they do not in any way, at least theologically support abortion, however, in practice that is another story. For instance, no Catholic who openly supports abortion is to receive holy communion. Nancy Pelosi is a prime example. She has said many things that go against church teachings, making her technically, a heretic, and that is grounds for excommunication.

The church has never been in support of the war based on the church's "Just War Theory." They came out against the war from the beginning.

I hope that helps.
To label religous individuals as "Stupid," is not only a stereotypical thing to say, it too is STUPID. I am of the opinion that the self proclaimed athiest is someone who would rather portray themselves as a intellectiual and free thinker, than to admit that they struggle with the existence of God. It is o.k. to not know everything.Actually, it is much easier to not believe in God, than it is to believe. Once I decide I believe in God, then I must figure out where God fits in to my life and belief system. Next, I have to begin holding myself accountable for my beliefs and actions. Why would someone put themselves through such introspection, if they do not want to see what is inside. I feel sorry for people who can not or do not believe in God, or Allah, or some divine being. To live my life w/o the hope of a afterlife, is not only sad but als depressing. I would hate to believe that mankind is the supreme being.

You said if we had questions concerning the Catholic faith, to ask, so here it is......

Church membership is at a all time low. The Vatican seems to ride the fence on some issues now days and I was wondering if you believe that they are more concerned about church membership, than standing up and taking hard line positions. I'm speaking of issues such as abortion, divorce, and the war in Iraq. Thanks for your time and God bless to all.
