Hello Dr. Baden,

Up to how many years can Morphine be detected in tissue of a corpse? Also, can the tooth or hair be used to determine if it was an overdose?

Thank you kindly,

Samantha

Has anyone used the interactive autopsy on the Autopsy home page? It says that there are several accompanying videos, but none are coming up. I just want to know if I am accessing the right site. Thanks.

I know this may seem odd to be asking a coroner, but i have watched all your documentaries and believe you may be the only one to help. My question is not about a death but it is about a live person. My husband.
After we got married a little under 4 years ago, my husband started with some muscle pain and fatigue. All lab tests for Lyme disease, MS and various other labs came back negative. He has had CPK counts ranging anywhere from 400 to 1300. He had a muscle biopsy done on his thigh that showed everything was normal. So he was labeled as having fibromyalgia, which my husband and I both refuse to accept. He has seem rheumatologists, neurologists, and other specialists and still no relief from pain.
He has taken Provigil, Nuvigil, Cymbalta, Ritalin, Wellbutrin, Ultram, and many other drugs with no relief or worse, they had reverse effects.
I would love it if you could review his labs and test results. However, I realize this would probably be near impossible. Is there anyone you could recommend him to see? We are unable to fly to distant states but we do not live far from New York. If there is anyone you could recommend there we would appreciate it very much. I feel you may be my last hope at an answer.

My brother passed away 7/31/09, he did have stomach cancer and had surgery. Bu I along with family members, friends and my brothers children that something wasn't right. His wife would never give us any info on what his issues were, never left the hospital only for her convience, always told us he came first, the 2 nd time he was admitted she went back to work PT, he was in Intensive care for months but still worked pt, when he was better and transfered she stopped working and no one could visit him alone not even his children. After his death, she ordered 10 deaths certificates, we even had Dr's who told us something wasn't righ. I don't think he knew everything and I also feel there was mental neglect from his wife while he was in the hospital. She's worked for Insurance companies for about 10 years. I really feel she helped his decreasing health so she wouldn't have to take him home I also feel she contributed to his death, I wrote both Hospitals he was in, even the staff told us something wasn't right. It took her 2 days to have him cremated, We all also feel she was a Narrcissist. Would an Autopsy tell anything now???

Can Embalming Prior To Autopsy Affect The Finding of Cause of Death

This is the scenario:

The deceased is a two year-old. One week prior to his death, he was discharged from the hospital after spending ten days in the ICU. He was suffering from severe abdominal pain. The doctors were having a difficult time diagnosing the underlying cause but seemed to think that a viral infection was most likely. CT scans, X-Rays, and multiple other tests were done showing lesions on the child's liver, lungs, and kindneys. When he was discharged (don't ask my why the child was ever discharged), follow up appointments with infectious disease control were scheduled. One week later, the child died. At per standard policy, the police consulted with doctors and interviewed family members. There were no signs of foul play and the body was released to the family. A funeral home picked up his body, and the body was embalmed. Before the funeral, the city medical examiner intervened and took custody of the body. The medical examiner concluded that the cause of death was homicide by blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Per the medical examiner, the child's liver was severely lacerated.

1. Can the embalming affect autopsy results?

2. Would the autopsy affect the visibility of brusing on the body?

3. Wouldn't external brusing by expected in a case of death by blunt force trauma?

Can anyone help me with these questions as well as identifying any other potential issues?

Dr. Baden,
My sister-in-law died 09/13/01 in Tennessee. The ME deemed it a suicide by GSW. The CSI never completed GS residue from the hands. I have the police report, ME autopsy report and diagrams of the scene. I would like a second opinion, if you please, on the given reports- mainly to confirm or deny the cause of death. I have contacted the MEs office in NC, but since the death occurred in Tennessee, I am having problems finding someone to review these records. As well, she was cremated upon her return to NC. Please advise. Thank you.

32 year old father of 2 poisoned with Etheline Glycol by girlfriend?

I am feeling like I am wasting my time a little but here is my story about my dads death at 32 years old in 1985.

My dad was a heavy drinker and had lost his family due to the night life he had.

He hooked up with another girl soon after we moved away and she liked to drink so they were a perfect match it seemed.

One night my dad and his girl friend were at a bar and my dad fell off the bar stool and had what was believed to be a gran maul seizure, and an ambulance was called.

When my dad arrived at the hospital he was alert but dizzy and sluring his words. The Dr asked him if he drank Ethyline Glycol then, and he said no. the Dr. also asked if he may have drank anything that he was not aware of the ingredients, and he said its possible.

They started treating him and then sent him to another hospital to have further treatment. Once at the new hospital the next day they also mention etheline glycol, and methanol as supicions.

My dad soon got worse had medibolic acidosis, and had renal failure, and many other major organ problems. He ended up in a coma and on life support for a few days before finally he finally died.

The cause of Death was ruled Natural Disease.

I have heard many rumors of his girlfriend poisoning him, but have no real proof, and since his death certificate says natural disease it seems impossible to move forward.

I have his medical records and have shown them to many Dr's and Nurses and everyone can not believe an autopsy was never done. Anyone help?

Dr. Baden,

I am hoping that you can direct me to the right person for help. My sister, age 47, passed away over Memorial Day Weekend this year. An autopsy was done indicated an enlarged heart, cirrosis of the liver and extremely high levels of cocaine in her system. I believe that was some foul play involved from her husband. How do I go about investigation this? He is a user and abuser, both physically, chemically and any other way he can find. I believe that he was only with her for her money and the nice things of value that she had.

Please point me in the right direction for some answers.

Thank you. Renee

Dr. Baden,

My mother died over 25 yrs. ago of supposedly breast cancer, she was 56 years old. The circumstance leading up to her premature death and after her death were very suspicious, as well as, her husband becoming unjustly enriched by swindling her out of everything, including our family home, her inheritance and all of the property, but the story doesn't stop there.
Death Certificate states Liver Failure due to Liver Metastatic adenocarcinoma ? Left breast.

I had always suspicion his first former wife and their only daughters involvement with not only mother, but with their own spouse's too! There were indications that something just wasn?t right with these people and the daughter flat refused to talk to any of us, ever. Anyway, sure enough each of their spouse?s has died and they ended up with it all, just as he did with my mother.

The daughter was married to a paramedic who became ill and died of liver cancer. During his illness she flat refused to help him at all and according to his family members he would have to drive himself to Arizona to get his liver drained. His brother from New York found out about this and flew out to stay with him and care for him until his death. After his death, his parents wanted to purchase a plot to give him a proper burial, but she refused and instead, had him cremated. She then, took his ashes and threw them out into the ocean to spite his elderly parents. He was 59. The death certificate states he died of Liver Carcinoma.

Then, the former wife?s husband died at age 64 (she?s 14 yrs. older than him) of acute renal failure due to encephalopathy (metabolic) according to the death certificate. She had him cremated as well, with no services and its uncertain weather she has ever bothered to pick up his remains/ashes at the mortuary. According to what I?ve been told is she attempted to have her husband committed and ruled incompetent, so she could gain control of his assets and the small four-plex?s that had been passed down to him from his family, but the judge ruled against her and she sealed case.

Since, it has been determined how these people defrauded my mother, but what?s disturbing is that I also, found that her husband used a 10-year old outdated ?affidavit of death of Joint Tenant? form (revised April 1973) to record to remove my mothers name off of each one of the properties. My mother died in 1983. The form company is still in existence and found that particular form had only been revised once in November 1982 since, its April 1973 revision.

Then, I happened to stumble across another disturbing fact regarding the same identical outdated form used five years later to record and remove a neighbor?s deceased husband off of her property. This was the same woman who had spouted off years earlier (before my mothers death) about having my mothers husband checked out and learning that he and my mother had a lot of money and owned a lot of land and spreading around how someday she was going to marry him for his money. Which, she eventually did 14 years later.

The same woman (who was only an acquaintance of my mothers) was one of the first one?s to show up, and one of the first one?s to sign my mother?s memorial book out of 150 people who showed up for her funeral.

There are all kinds of twists and turns to this story like the one that still haunts me to this day. In 1978 I came into town to surprise my mom and couldn?t get a hold of her for three days. When I finally did, she told me that they had been taking care of some business which, come to find out was at Palm Mortuary making their final arrangements. She was 52 yrs. old and in good health with a lot of energy, but was diagnosed with breast cancer just a little over a year after they purchased these pre-need plans.

My honest opinion is that he was using something to slowly poison her, so he could have it all for himself, but I don?t think it was just him doing all of this. I think all three (he, his x and daughter) of them conspired together to concoct each scheme to defraud each spouse eventually, for their own financial gain.

What I?d like to know is if they have come far enough along to be able to run tests to determine what poison was used vs. having to know what poison to look for?

And also, would there be any possibility in finding out anything now since, it?s been 26 yrs?

The reason why I?m asking is I think that whatever he used on my mom, that worked, they would use as well, on their spouse?s. If I?m right, why would they change something that worked so well before!

These people seem to of all followed the same pattern?s over the years with their individual spouse?s and never once have they ever been questioned about anything.

That?s my problem, I?ve not been able to get any help from the very beginning that, I so desperately need.

I would appreciate any information that you could give me.

Warmly,

Kaye

I am hoping that Dr. Baden could help me. On Sept. 11,1978 my mother died. I have heard varying versions of the cause of her death, including murder. So now I was ready to know the truth and I ordered the death certificate which states under cause of death "pending" then "undetermined". She was only thirty-six years old and was supposed to come to see me the next day for the first time in many years. Then she was gone and now, all these years later I still don't know why. Can you explain the terminology on her death certificate? I hope this will get to Dr. Baden. Thank you in advance, John.

I have a question for Dr. Baden. Some years ago there was a triple murder in my family. All three victims were murdered within 30 minutes of one another, 1 was shot several times in the head the other two were shot and beaten to death with a shovel spade. The bodies were not discovered for 2 days. How does the coroner know who was killed first, second and third. I have always believed a different scenrio happened the night of the murders and this question has bugged me for 14 years

I became intrigued with the James Howell case in 2004. I immediately went to the library to gather as much information as I could. What I found were pieces of a puzzle, that would never fit. Illinois oldest missing Children's case, open, active? I wonder, yet I ponder the possibilities almost daily.

I was more baffled by the huge inconsistencies. The dates of his disappearance, were the parents home, or at the Midway Drive In? Why was there a huge lapse in time, before he was reported missing? I can certainly understand why this touched Butch Kimmel's heart, and why he couldn't let it go. And neither can I.

Through my own research, it was clear Debra, Jimmy's sister became the spokesperson for the family. Now, contact with her has been lost. I found very little about Jimmy's mother, Sharon Hutch, only that she had spent years in a local nursing home. And Suffered from mental illness.

View my website when you have time, http://www.squidoo.com/stillmissingjameshowell

Thank you for your time regarding, Jimmy Howell

Sincerely,

My son recently died of accidental self strangulation. The coroner did little investigation & no atopsy and determined in less than 9 days that it was suicide. There was no evidence that it was intentional. The coroners in Colorado are elected and are not required to have any forensic experience. They are only required to take 40 hours of continuing education classes in forensic investigation within their first year in office. This state statute, like those in many other states, dates back to territorial times. It is imperitive that citizens are served by coroners who are qualified. The reputations of the deceased are at stake and, in some cases, life insurance benefits. Death determinations should not be made by unqualified people. We must start a movement to change the laws to require, at the very least, that states with elected coroners have a state medical examiner with forensic experience to review the determinations of unattended deaths.

This message is for Dr. Baden: 4 years ago my Aunt passed away suddenly, Before she passed away she kept going to different Doctor's complaining about Headaches they put her threw xrays, mri's, catscan's, they never found anything after she passed my Aunt left me her house and after I spent 6 months redoing the house right before we were going to move in, I kept getting a feeling that i should call a chimney inspector so i did he came out and told me no way could you move in here without having the duct work from the furnace to the chimney replaced because it was all full of holes, rusted thru, and the best part of all is when the heating and a.c. company installed the furnace they just connected it to the old pipe dropped the sleeve down the chimney and never attached the sleeve to the pipe and they passed the furnace for inspection every fall saying it was fine and signed off on it on the furnace. The inspector said it was pumping about 45% of the exhaust back into the house and that if we had moved in here without contacting him he said we could of had carbon monoxide poisoning and could have died in our sleep. So we had it fixed been fine since but our a.c. went out yesterday the a.c. company the fixed it for me came out today i was talking to the guy about what happened and showed him the pictures of the furnace and he suggested I write a letter to you because as he pointed out to me if they will do this to one senior citizen how many others over the years have these guys done this to? So my question to you is yes it has been several years since my Aunt passed away but would there be any way to prove that she died of carbon monoxide poisoning at this point? or is it to late? I hope you can help me yes i would like justice for my Aunt ( my mom's sister) but my biggest concern here is again how many other people has this company done this to? Please help thanks, steve aamericanpainting@msn.com
