1-A military commander should be more skilled at what he's doing. If he is more skilled then he will have better chance of his team surviving and getting the job done. His men will respect him and his men would probably like him more if his men survived. 2-Yelling and intimidating your men will get what you want done, but won't get the respect of your men. Sobel wasn't good at what he was doing and thats why he didn't earn the respect of his company, and thats also why they got rid of him at the end of the episode. 3-The most difficult part of the training of Easy Company would have been the parachute jumps. I have no fear of heights and i love roller coasters but there is something about jumping out of a plane THOUSANDS of feet in the air with a backpack that is your savior, and the fact that parachutes don't always open. That would be horrid.

1) I think that it is more important for a commander to be skilled at what he is doing. If a commander is friendly and well-liked by his men, but not skilled at what he is doing, there could be terrible consequences on the battlefield. A commander's job is to have his men prepared for battle and to execute his objective properly, not to be liked by his men. That being said, I think it is sill very important for a commander to have the respect of his men so they will be willing to obey him and follow him into battle. 2) Sobel's character suggests that good leadership in the mililtary often involves harsh treatment of the troops. Although Sobel's men have a strong dislike for him, Easy Company becomes the best company at Camp Toccoa. Easy Company's success can be attributed to Sobel's difficult and often very harsh training. On the other hand, Sobel's character also displays the idea that to be a good leader, you should also try to gain the respect of your men. Sobel does not accomplish this, and is eventually transferred because of the lack of repspect his men have for him. 3) If I were a member of Easy Company, the most difficult part of training for me probably would have been the constant verbal and mental abuse from Captain Sobel. While the physical aspect of the training would have been difficult, I feel that I would have made it through that part alright. I think that the constant abuse from Sobel would have eventually worn me down mentally to the point where I probably would not be able to take his harsh and often unfair treatment any more.

1. I think it is more important to be skilled at what the officer is doing than to be liked by his men. Being liked on the battle field does not help the soldiers in battle. If the company has a highly skilled leader than it is more likely they will survive. If the xo is not skilled than more than likely the soldiers will lack confidence and skill in battle. 2. Sobels character shows that good leadership is not shown by rank.Leadership is not just training it is not panicking on the battlefield which sobel did. You need to be tough on your soldiers but not to extreme were they resent you and sobel's company hated him. 3. I think the worst part of training for me would have been the small selection of food. I eat all the time and the easy company only ate three meals and at a certain time every day for so long. I am used to eating whenever I feel like it.

Corey Villarreal 3rd Hour September 11, 2007 Movie Questions 1.To be skilled in your job is much more important. The role of a leader is to lead, no matter what the circumstance, therefore the leader needs to be able to make good decisions. There will always be people out there who do not want to follow, so there is less use in trying to win them all over, because it simply cannot be accomplished. It is more likely to win the troops over by making good decisions, so this makes it more important to lead well. 2.Sobels characters suggests to me that there is many leaders out there who do not lead well. They place far too much pressure on themselves and make very poor decisions. As much of a hard ass as he tried to be, it didn't work out that well. He put far too much emphasis on being like that. I can only imagine that there is hundreds of generals like that in the rest of the military. This also suggests to me how difficult it is for a general to be accepted by his men. In order to be respected, he needs to show respect in return. 3.For me, the most difficult of the training would definitely be the challenge of being mentally ready for anything. Being a paratrooper is a very challenging task, simply for the fact that they could encounter just about anything. The training would be rough, having to prepare men for wilderness survival, combat, and how to be mentally prepared for all of it. In order to be mentally ready, the soldiers would have to train like they were going through hell, putting their bodies to the ultimate test.

1. I believe it is more important to be a skilled commander opposed to being liked by his fellow soldiers. As a commander your most important job is to prepare the soldiers for combat in the most efficient way. Although Sobel is hated by every member of the Easy Company, they prove to be one of finest companys. Sobel is noted for his strong commanding and leadership abilities. None the less, although as unfriendly he may seem, his leadership abilities forego the personality faults he may possess. 2. Sobel's character suggests that to be a good leader in the military, you must be strong and relentless. You can not allow emotions to interfere with the job at hand. Sobel does not allow anyone to push him over and maintains an almost arrogant attitude about himself and his leading abilities. However in the end, his arrogance overrode his actual military abilities. In the line of fire, Sobel cracked under the pressure and proved to be more of a hazard then commander, to the company. 3. The most dificult part of the training for me, would have been simply having to deal with Sobel as a commander. The running up Curahee I could deal with, but his relentless ranting would have been hard to adhere to. I ran cross country and although running with the elite easy company would have been quite difficult compared to my high school team. I would rather run up and down Curahee all day long, then listen to Sobel speak.

1- I think it is much more important for a military commander to be skilled at what he is doing then to be liked by his men. When your in battle it is more important for you to get your men home safely then it is to be friends with them, and the best way to do that is to be skilled at what your doing. As a military commander it is good to be hard on your men, and have strict and harsh rules, because when they get into battle they will be trained much better which is good for everyone around them. When in battle everyone wants to be by the people that are the best because it improves there chances of seeing the next day, so i think that everyone would say that they would rather be by a good soldier then a good friend, and thats what it all comes down to. 2- Sobel was hard on his men, he pushed them hard and expected only the best. He trained them to be the best soldiers they could be so that when they were fighting they were the soldiers everyone wanted to be by, they were the soldiers everyone looked up to. Sobel was very good at makeing soldiers out of men, but Sobel was not a good commander. When put in battle situations he choked. Noone wanted to go to battle with him because they knew that he would likely lead them to there death. 3- I don't think there is any one thing that would be the most difficult to me, but rather it would be a collection of all the strict rules and long training combined. Running to the top of the mountain sometimes several times a day would be very tireing and hard, but if what i want more then anything else was to become an airborn soldier i know that i could do it. In some ways i think that the rules you have to follow could be harder, because of the strictness of them. Such as having a rusty bayonnet, or having a can of peaches. Lastly one thing i would find especially hard is very rarly getting a weekend pass to go to the bar or a movie, but rather do more training. It would just be a long strenuous routine that would be hard to adapt to.

1- I believe it is more important for a commander to be skilled at what he is doing rather than be liked by his men. I say this because war is a very difficult thing to go through and soldiers need to be as calm as possible; they can not do this when they have to worry about whether their commander knows what direction he is leading them in. Also, if a commander is skilled at what he is doing, he has a better chance of his men liking him than being liked by the men and somehow that translating to him being skilled at what he is doing. Besides, whether you like someone does not really matter if you are dead because of their ignorance and lack of intelligence and leadership. 2- Sobel's character suggests many things about good leadership in the military. First of all, someone may look good on paper, but when the bullets start flying, that is when someone really proves their worth as a leader. Another thing I noticed was that Sobel was leading a group of men that did not entirely support him. Sobel had lost the respect of his men when he made numerous mistakes and yet still did not recognize what the problems were. A good commander needs to have the full support of the troops behind him and Sobel failed to accomplish that task. 3- I believe the hardest part of Easy Company's training would be the conditioning, especially the three mile run up Currahee. Knowing that you would have to run up and down a three mile mountain in the Georgia heat very often would make it very difficult to get up in the morning.

1.) I think it is more important to be skilled at what you are doing, and to take into consideration of your company's point of views. I don't think its wise to focus on just one aspect between both of these points of views, I think, to be a good leader that you need to be able to make your company carry out their orders effectively and also treat them with respect, so they will treat you with respect. 2.) His character suggests that in order to be a good leader, you need to be decisive, and able to make the right decisions, also you cannot be a push-over if you are a good leader. I belive that Sobel was a push-over, and his only source of power was his rank. Sobel's character also suggests that you can't just have rules and strict orders for your company, you need to treat them all as a brother of yours. 3.) The most difficult part for me in the training that Easy Company endured would probably be the running up the mountain, and back down it with my gear on and not being able to drink. I think this would be extremely difficult, considering that he also had a specific time that they had to do it in, otherwise they had to do it again. -- Edited by Clisch at 09/11/2007 5:39 PM -- Edited by Clisch at 09/11/2007 5:40 PM

1.) I think it is more important for the commander to be skilled at what he is doing out on the battle field than for him to be liked by the other soldiers. I say this because the commander has a duty to carry out his orders and to do it effectively. If you have a commander, like Sobel for instance, who doesn't know what he's doing and sort of freezes up on the battle field, then he is putting the soldiers lives in danger. 2.) Sobel was a very strict commander because he made his men do very strenuous activities like running up that mountain that was three miles up and taking hikes that were 12 miles long. But just because he was strict didn't mean he was a good commander in battle. Most of the time, Sobel didn't know where he was or what he was doing. This made him panic and make some bad decisions. 3.) I think the hardest part for me if I was at Camp Toccoa would be running up that mountain that was three miles up, especially right after you just ate spaghetti. That would be a huge pain in the butt for me.

1-It is much more crucial for a military commander to be skilled at what he is doing. The military is not about making friends and sitting around the camp fire singing coombaya. The military is about defending your country, and if that means a military commander has to be "unkind" to his men then so be it. If a person is going into the military and expects his commander is going baby him then he has no business being there. Based on these reasons i believe it is more important for a military commander to be skilled at what he is doing. 2-Sobel is a very charismatic person. He knows what he wants done and is not easily swayed by what other people think. His character makes him a good leader in the military because he is very strict and doesn't put up with horse-play. He also has a lot of pride and doesnt want his men to make him look bad. He also cares about what his superiors think about him so he trys to impress them. 3-If i was in Easy Company i think the hardest part for me would be the conditioning. There were many hard courses and obstacles that Sobel made his men go through. Sobel made his men run many miles without taking a drink of water. He found out that one of his men drank some water and made him redo the whole course. That woud be torturous for me.

1. I believe that it is very important for a military leader to be skilled at what he is doing. but i also think that it is just as important for him to be liked by his men. He may be very skilled, but if his men hate him, then they might not listen to him or follow his orders. But then again, if he is really liked by his men, but he is poorly skilled, then he would not be able to carry out his job in training his men correctly. So i believe that being liked and being skilled are both equally important. 2. Sobel, in my oppinion, was not a good leader. He did show good discipline for his men, however, they all hated him. Sobel was a poor leader in the battle plans. He showed a lot of stress under pressure, which is not good for leadership. Sobel shows that good leadership is very important in the military. 3. The hardest part of the training for Easy Company to me would have to be Curahee. three miles up, three miles down, not for me. I can run, and i don't mind it too much, but six miles, multiple times every day would be a little too much for me. I don't think that i would mind the mental part of the training. Curahee sounded like hell, and i wouldn't want any part to do with it.

1) For me I find them both to be important but I will have to go with skill. Though his men may mutiny if they hate him, if he is skilled enough they should respect him. Respect to me is the key to following commands. If you do not respect the one you follow then why should you follow his/her orders? To have respect and be skilled at what you do will allow your orders to be followed and through your skill those orders may be the correct one for each situation that arises. 2) Sobel's character was good for training the men. As a leader in combat exercises, he downright was horrible. His own men wouldn't follow him. A military leader must have the skills necessary for leading his men into combat situations. They will not respect a man whos lack of skills in combat oriented areas would get them killed. They may listen to him because they respect the military but not the commander in cases like Sobel in the movie. 3)For me it would have been the physical conditioning. I am not very fast and my stamina is a little below average. I also am overweight. I would not be able to keep the pace and difficulty of the conditioning. If the pace was slower I may have been able. with time.

1- I think it is more important for a commander to be skilled at what he is doing. Just because the commander is liked by his men, doesn't mean that he's a good commander. Liking your commander won't save you on the battlefield. Proper training by a skilled commander will save you on the battlefield. That is why I think it is more important to have a skilled commander, rather than a liked one. 2- I think Sopel's character suggests that good leadership is a good thing to have in the military. In this case, Sopel did not have good leadership. He always got lost, and made a bad decision that could have got all of his men killed. You saw what happened to the rest of Sopel's men when he didn't have good leadership. That is what I think Sopel's character suggests about good leadership in the military. 3- If I were in the shoes of Easy Company, the physical training would have been the hardest part for me. I don't like to run, and I am not so good at it either. So the physical training would have been hard for me. Also, just having to listen to being told to run Currahee again would have been hard. That is what would have been the hardest part of being in Easy Company's shoes for me.
