20/20 tonight

20/20 tonight is about sex. They mentioned a man with three wives - this might be secondwife's show.

SW,
And as I posted before, when your sister first started posting under your ID, I questioned how different she sounded. You had always seemed polite and straight forward. My only issue was when you came back, I was a bit wary of whether you were really back or whether your sister was still using your ID. And given what she had put you and us through, I think that was understandable.
I also am sorry you do not feel you are among friends. Given the trouble and chaos in your life, it seems like you need some. If some of us are causing you more pain and aggravation please just ignore us.
And for the record, I also posted that I do not think that you are the folks on the other boards. Unfortunately, what your sister did is not uncommon and someone else (IMHO) is just doing the same type of thing.

sw, I think you are who you say you are too, but didn't you say that it was your sister who let us know about the show, because you weren't posting at that time? I find this confusing. Why not just set it straight, instead of shouting?

If you've read these posts, you know that we have had others here playing games with alternate IDs, including your own sister, you say. You can't blame us for questioning you. It's not about friendship.

Frankly, this way you have of getting angry any time anyone questions you just reinforces the idea that you and your sister might be the same person.

sw,

I think it's pretty obvious that you are who you say you are. For all that's worth. I'm sorry you don't feel like you're among friends--we've all felt that way from time to time, but it passes after awhile, when you get to know people better.

I don't really understand that either. It amazes me when people get caught for having more than one account, and seem to be actually surprised that they were caught or that people would be upset about that. I'd have a hard time trying to keep all the stories straight!

Oh wow! My mom's friend had a crazy experience with a guy that she met online too. He had all these crazy stories that were just obvious lies, but she didn't see it. It ended up a huge mess, but she's back on the internet looking for guys!

I guess I sort of understand it from that point of veiw. I know that when my nieces went off to college, I told them that this was their chance to change who everyone else perceived them to be. They may have been "shy" in HS but now they could be outgoing, etc.
What I don't understand is the people with multiple IDs. That just seems like too much trouble for me.
And I constantly remind myself that just because someone on the net says it is so does not mean it is. When the net was new my brother got taken twice (10/15 years ago). First, he went to visit (over the Christmas holidays, yet) a girl he had been corresponding with on the net, only to find that about the only thing that she had said that was the truth was that she was female. Age, job, weight, marital status....everything was a lie. And he did not learn his lesson, either. Later he ended up inviting someone to visit him and she sort of just moved in. And she turned out to be psycho. Literally....he had to move!

By the way: I am a tall, thin, rich, Dr who dates George Clooney now that Matthew has hooked up with Camila. ;)

I think that a part of it for some people has to do with being unhappy with their life, so playing out the life that they always wanted. On the internet, if you want to be a doctor, you can be a doctor! Want to be thin, than sure, you can be thin!

I wrote a paper on internet child pornography offenders, which led me to how these people hide who they are in chats and boards, etc. on the internet. Many of the people they talked to who lied about their identity on the internet, talked about feeling free to be whoever they wanted to be, and didn't have to worry about being caught or found out.

I think people who aggressively troll like that have some problems in real life.

People with alternate identities? Perhaps they are practicing writing or maybe they are just loney? They create a whole life for themself on the internet rather than actually go out there and do it.

You know, I am who I say I am, on the internet and in real life. I have a really hard time understanding why people do this stuff.

It's a shame because when you are on the internet, you always have to be wary.

It just seems like an awful lot of work....and for what?
I have never been a good liar, even when it would have served me well. I might be able to carry it off on a board where nobody saw my face... But, again, Too Much Trouble!

Probably so. Rainy posted a great article on the art of trolling, let me go dig it up for you, I found it quite enlightening and it should be required reading for all of us genuine people, so that we may understand a little better.

I think so, I thought about testing a character out here -- just to see how believable people thought he would be, but decided I didn't want to risk the credibility issues.
