Some interesting FLDS facts. The name of Short Creek was changed to Colorado City because the 1950?s raids made the name Short Creek notorious. Work Missions: Before the lost boys and the law of placement, young FLDS men would go on work missions for the FLDS Church. They were encouraged to get the highest paying jobs they could find and send all their earnings to the UEP. During their two year mission, the familes of these young men would support them. After they returned, they were given a wife and property in the UEP so they could raise a family. This policy persisted well into the 21st century. The Law of Placement: This is unique to the FLDS. Young ladies who were anxious to marry were to submit themselves to the leadership and their father for placement in a divine marriage arrangement. The promises of Sainthood were sometimes given to young women who submitted to the law of placing, by marrying men many decades older than themselves. The idea of placement got its origins from FLDS beliefs that in the preexistence, men and women covenanted with each other who they would marry in the mortal life. It was the purpose of the prophet to find out the will of God whom these spirits had made covenants with and place them accordingly. The idea of placement goes against the teachings of BY ?I am free, and so are you. My advice to the sisters is, Never be sealed to any man unless you wish to be. I say to you High Priests and Elders, Never from this time ask a woman to be sealed to you, unless she wants to be; but let the widows and children alone. I might notice many more items pertaining to this matter; but the Elders going round telling the sisters they must be sealed to them, or they cannot get an exaltation, particularly has wounded my feelings. How ignorant such men are!? He also taught, ?When your daughters have grown up and wish to marry, let them have a choice in a husband if they know what their choice is, but if they happen to guess at it and marry the wrong man, let them try again and if they are still wrong the second time, let them try again. This is the way I shall do with my daughters and this is the way I have already done? Pennies for the prophet: This is some Big Love trivia that has some fact to it. When Warren Jessops brother was arrested by authorities, they found in his possession $142,000 in cash, 7 cell phones, and he was clutching a jar of cash contributions that had written on it ?Pennies for the Prophet? There was also a picture of Warren Jeffs on the Jar.

For anyone wanting to read more about the FLDS belief, background etc. I found a rather good website with google. Here's a link. FLDSTruth.org "This site is maintained by members of the FLDS Church to help disabuse the public mind." -- duets -- Edited by duets at 07/04/2008 12:28 PM PDT

Rock, thats not crazy at all.I think your preist is right, especially if Harry dean Stanton or his character in some way resemble your grandfather.I hope i wasn't coming across rude or anything.I can get critical due to bad experiences I have had with men.Perhaps that is why I can't stand Alby , but I adore Bill.Bill's character has qualitys I admire in a man. He's kind, patient and very loving toward his wives and kids.He exhibit the dad I never had. It's funny how emotionally attached or reactive we can be towards TV characters. In real life ,I find all the actors very likeable and I adore Jeanne Tripplehorn. She seems so nice and very kind.Bills got a great sense of humor and seems like a great guy too.Alby in real life isn't anything like his character and I can't wait to see Mama Mia with "Sarah" in it, it looks like a real cute movie coming out soon. Luvbarb, I have watched the whole series from the beginning watching each episode twice. I watched it again when they re-showed it. Roman reminds me of my grandfather. He looks like him and dresses like him. My grandfather was nothing like Roman. I have been obsessed with Roman because of that. It is silly and stupid, I know. I know that it is Harry Dean Stanton and good writing making Roman interesting and compelling. My grandfather died 7 years ago. My own father died when I was 4. My grandfather was more like a father to me. My heart was reacting to Roman looking like my grandfather. Our priest likes to say that the heart has reasons that reason does not know. That is me on Roman. It is crazy. But my heart goes out every time I see him.

Titannia, I think you're right about Roman having the former prophet murdered.I was thinking about an episode though that Barb was explaining to Sarah about how Roman came into power.Barb's understanding was of a hostlie takeover. The older gentleman Mr. Hollister? yes was telling Bill and Joey about the alleged murder. And Yes Harry Dean Stanton is a tremendous actor. The entire cast is wonderful. It's sad some have had experiences with a bad grandfather. My grandfather was the best man I will ever know.He was a prince of a man who would never have hurt anyone. He generally liked everyone he met and brought out the best in all around him.He was a quite a man. The brilliance of Harry Dean Stanton's performance, is that he can have Roman do all that, yet still bring tears to your eyes when he's dying. He's got many dimensions, not just one. > Let's not forget > how he became the "prophet".He forced the old one out > by taking over his shares. Actually he had him murdered, and might even have held the gun himself. Re-watch--Old Man Hollander(sp?) tells the whole story. > Remember what he did to Barb when she > would have won teacher of the year? He outed Bill's > family just out of spite. He truly is as Barb said" a > false prophet who rules by fear".He also forced Bills > father- a complete jerk in his own right-to oust Bill > from the compound as he was afraid of his leadership > qualitys. Oh, Frank would have kicked Bill out anyway--he never did care for any of his children. You can tell Frank's all about Frank. > Roman is certainly no grandfatherly type of > person, he's a snake. Many grandfathers are. > If his character is loosely > based on Rulon Jeffs does this mean that Alby is > Warren Jeffs? YES. -- So I say live and let live. That's my motto: Live and let live. Anyone who can't go along with that, take 'em outside and shoot the motherfucker. It's a simple philosophy, but it's always worked in our family.

Marigoldmama, Thanks, well it's slow go here. Meanwhile, we're hanging in there. Lot's to do & no time to do it..... At night, pumps beeping and I'm trying to sleep, oh well. I'm currently reading Stolen Innocence. Whew, it's a long one. I started it the other day. At this rate, I may get it finished sooner than I think. Rockportmomma, Hello, I'm duets, maybe you would enjoy checking out the thread "movies, books on topics related to Big Love". I've read & reviewed some 50+ books. Check it out if ya get a chance..... -- duets -- Edited by duets at 06/30/2008 1:34 AM PDT

Rock, I don't know if you're kidding or not , but have you watched much of the show?I didn't like seeing Roman or anyone getting shot, but I hardly shed any tears.Roman is a crooked business man who undermines and bullys his competitors. He treats his wives and daughters like hired hands and completly manipulates every situation he's in.Let's not forget how he became the "prophet".He forced the old one out by taking over his shares. In the corporate world this would be a hostile takeover. He was in a position to do this as he was the former prophets accountant.Remember what he did to Barb when she would have won teacher of the year? He outed Bill's family just out of spite. He truly is as Barb said" a false prophet who rules by fear".He also forced Bills father- a complete jerk in his own right-to oust Bill from the compound as he was afraid of his leadership qualitys.Roman is certainly no grandfatherly type of person, he's a snake. If his character is loosely based on Rulon Jeffs does this mean that Alby is Warren Jeffs? It will be interesting to see what Alby has up his sleeve. "Polygamy is religious tradition going back to the days of the patriarchs" -- Edited by luvbarb at 06/29/2008 10:56 PM PDT

I finally figured it out after watching the show a few times - Roman reminds me of my father (whom I love dearly) but not in a good way - he reminds me of my dad when he is at his most manipulative I think that is one of the reasons I find the show so fascinating I did not like Escape I am reading stolen innocence and it is a good story but could have used a stronger editor - best one I have found so far is Under the Banner of Heaven - it has been out for a # of year so I bet you could find a cheap copy on amazon. I agree with others it has been fascinating learning about FDLS and how accurate some of the portrayals are in Big Love KT

I liked Escape because the author grew up in the compund that resembles Big Love. I read Irene Spencers book, can't think of the name of it, and she grew up in the compounds that I THINK are represented by the Greens. Duets knows all the good books but her husband is very sick right now. I have on request Elissa Wall's book. It seems many of us are on tight budgets because we are all requesting books from the libary and they come in when they come in. I am not a fiction reader. I really only read non-fiction. So this has kinda mixed the two for me. PLus, I really like Big Love. What could be better?

Marigoldmama, Thanks again! I'm not much of a book reader since college. I do most of my reading on-line. I want to get back to books, but my girls wear me out. Which one or two are your favorites? If you were going to be trapped on that famous desert island, what one or two books on the subject would you take?
