Oprah follow-up

Oprah did a follow-up today on the show where she went to the YFZ ranch. One big question, she said, was "Where are the boys?" She had Carolyn Jessup skyping in, talking about her daughter Betty (the one who returned), who she said was under tremendous pressure and scrutiny to say the right thing. (They all said they liked her, but they didn't believe her about there being no underage marriages.)

Carolyn Jessup also talked about the lost boys - she said that when she was growing up, 80% of the girls married boys their own age, but when Warren Jeffs came in, he began marrying them off to the older men, and kicking out boys who were not passive enough to accept the situation - 100 in one week, I think she said.

Carolyn Jessup was completely believable. It's hard to tell what the truth is.

Most of the books and articles that I have read have seemed to say this. That there may have been some problems with the FLDS before but that they were greatly increased in number and severity when Warren Jeffs became prophet. IMO he "confused" prophet with dictator.

It looks like it was not the idea of living in polygamy after all. It was Warren Jeffs who took it upon himself to change things. His father was nothing like that. It parallels Roman changing JC after he took power when Bills grandfather mysteriously died.

When Rulon Jeffs, Warrens father, passed away he never designated or ordained a successor and Warren promptly assumed control and he instituted the following measures:

Forbidding followers to talk to any non FLDS members even their own relatives.

Creation of the Sons of Helaman, a sort of secret police which searched members homes for unapproved literature. Male violators were excommunicated from the church and their wives and children were reassigned to worthier FLDS patriarchs.

Announced that members of the FLDS should home school their children. Before that time the majority of FLDS children were enrolled in the public school system.

During a Saturday prayer meeting, Jeffs read a list of 20 names and asked the people to stand up. He announced that they had been excommunicated and must leave the community immediately. Their wives and children would be reassigned to other men.

Yep, Those are the folks that I no longer even try (after almost three years) to engage in discussion.

It would be a major shock and almost impossible adjustment for any teenager to be put out to fend for themselves at that age. But for a boy to be sent into a totally foreign culture, on their own, that they have been raised to believe is sinful...to me, that is beyond cruel. :_|

Latayne, Believe it or not, dispite all of the evidence, we have had some posters deny that Lost Boys exist. Or tell us, like they say about anything they don't want to discuss, that we "wouldn't understand".

I gave this information on another thread:

There's an organization that keeps track of media references to them -- see here.
(The site looks really out of date but the items are listed chronologically. Just keep scrolling down.)

Also-- on the thread "Were you raised FLDS?" a man named Brian Mackert, who wrote the book Illegitimate is posting some interesting things.

I have corresponded with both Mackert and Carolyn Jessop and I think they are both on the level. The web site I listed above gives so many newspaper articles about the "lost boys" that I don't think anyone can reasonably deny that this problem exists.

I never thought "the lost boys" stories were EVER doubted! Every couple of years, I travel with my sister from Arizona, through Utah, and up to Montana. Many years ago (long before BL), I bought a Utah newspaper with a huge article on the "lost boys", which included several interviews with these teenagers(with photos....they were teens!) That was the first time I ever laid eyes on the name "Warren Jeffs". The paper went on to mention how Jeffs was busy establishing a compound in Texas because the heat had been turned on in Arizona and Utah to eradicate the FLDSers. Now I understand that perhaps only some of the "elite" FLDS were sent to Texas. Anyway, I was shocked that underage males were getting kicked out of their homes which is against the law, and no one was being arrested for it. Bill's story about getting dumped at age 14 always reminds me of that newspaper story.

Again I missed the show! But I have to say that I find Carolyn Jessop believable too Marion.

After reading her book and seeing her interviewed several times, I've come to the conclusion that there is no reason not to believe her.
