What are some examples of fights you felt were ruined due to bad officiating? On the flipside, are there fights that were made better because of good officiating? Is there anyone you see working a fight that makes you cringe? Why? -- ~Susan

I haven't seen this fight in a while, but if I remember correctly JCC had him in the corner and was just teeing off on his skull. Taylor's eyes were gone, that is exactly what refs are trained to watch for and stop fights when they see fighters like that... JCC WON that fight, he beat the snot out of the other guy. So you would hand the belt to a guy who can just barely stand and who had been clearly beaten to a pulp in the 2nd half of that fight? Who landed the more telling blows? Who would you rather have been if you were one of those guys after that fight? I'll be honest I thought that was a good stoppage, just like I thought the Corrales fight where he beat Jose Luis Castillo after he kept spitting out his mouthpiece could have been stopped before in favor of Castillo. It is a fine line and very debatable, but I've always admired the way JCC fought back in that fight against a quicker, slicker, better boxer. The way he fought back, and PREVAILED..

he is ...very much so i never liked the dude..he seems to favor fighters in the ring....i really was pissed at him when he officiated the hopkins wright fight he never took a point off hopkins to keep him from hugging and using all his dirty tactics....and many mayweather fights...and this last fight he just really blew it... refs like this are the reasons we have boring ass fights and ridiculous judgement calls....i hope they get a ref who doesnt care about the name ..but about the game...and just calls it like it should be called...i hope they fire his ass....

i agree that joe cortez ought to be ashamed of himself after that riduculous, & pittiful call he made on Soto. Soto won that fight without a doubt, Joe not only stopped sotos momentum from knocking out lorenzo, but lorenzos eyes was bleeding uncontrollably, his nose was smashed in 3 different places, and theyre telling me that the grazing punch on his head was the injury that was going to stop the fight?!?!?!? Im ashamed to be a boxing fan after watching that bullshit. I hope that there is an appeal process that can make this right. If i was soto i wouldnt even waste my time on a rematch with that fucken coward lorenzo.

That's when Soto had this look of wonderment, and then proceeded to brush Cortez aside to get at Lorenzo, as if to say "What the fuck are you doing?"

I agree wholeheartedly about Joe Cortez... I don't know if he's on the take, or what's happening but EVERY fight he has officiated over the last year or so has been a disaster. He won't just let the fighters fight. I am at the point where if I learn that he's officiating, I turn off the fight. I have been a fight-fan since Ali, and I've never seen anything like what's been happening with him lately... you never remember the referee, and that's how it should be. You don't pay to see the ref, you pay to see a fight. HBO and/or Joe Cortez, if you're reading this, it's time for him to retire!

When the ref saids nothing about another fighter holdiing alot Tyson VS Holifield, The head butting is also another thing Holifield is good at. The holding, Shane Mosley I think is good at and the ref saids nothing. After so many holds they should be punish. I know its hard because alot of fighters hit and hold alot, its a style (Ricky Hatton). Hopkins does this alot too.

Once again...Joe Cortez...during Soto vs Lorenzo co-feature before Pacquiao vs Diaz... Never mind the fact that Lorenzo was bleeding out in the corner, while Cortez took his time making up his mind. Wtf?! Hasnt Cortez been doing this long enough to know better? Cortez's DQ decision against Soto was questionnable. Lorenzo hit the canvas (at this point Cortez should have started counting down) and should have recognized that Soto's last punch, which was to the back of the head, only grazed Lorenzo.. And to add to this, what was Cortez thinking when he stepped in between Soto and Lorenzo, but didnt indicate his reason for doing so? Huh? Hrrmmm, Cortez using his 'inside voice'...'Lemme jump between you boys because I can...' That was so vague... -- Edited by ChicagoGurl at 07/03/2008 7:39 AM PDT -- Edited by ChicagoGurl at 07/03/2008 7:41 AM PDT

oh...and to answer the question of the worst officiating I've ever seen... had to be kostya tzu against hatton. it was allowed to be wrestlemania at it's worst. I'd have quit too once I realized the guy would be allowed to grapple me like that. -- Floyd is like the patriots, the moat. M ost O verrated of A ll T ime

Joe cortez is like the 3rd fighter in the ring. That camerahound is so utterly overinvolved there should be odds for him winning via split decision. -- Floyd is like the patriots, the moat. M ost O verrated of A ll T ime

Joe 'Fair, but firm' Cortez enjoys the spotlight too much. @ amish: I agree with you about the UK refs. If a boxer such as Hatton can influence the ref selected in his fight, then what does that say about the boxing organization as a whole?

tcdrover- How can you say that was a good stoppage. 2 seconds to go. There was no way Chavez could have gotten across the ring and landed another blow. The damage had already been done in that fight. 2 seconds more would not have mattered because another blow would not have been landed. Terrible, terrible, stoppage... worst in boxing history in my mind. Taylor should have at least gotten the victory he deserved after the injuries he absorbed in that fight. -- Douglas

tcdrover, not to put you on blast but if you think the Taylor vs Chavez was a good stoppage then you shouldn't have a problem with any premature stoppage. Hands down-when you think bad officiating Chavez vs Taylor should come to mind before any other fights. 2 fighters in neutral corners, no way Chavez had enough time to get across the ring in 2 seconds. Meldrick was never the same afterwards true, but he deserved his moment-he earned it.

JCC/Taylor fight will be embedded forever, in the minds of boxing afficionados, for decades to come, as one of the most controversial bouts, in the history of boxing. Meldrick Taylor was way ahead in the scorecards. Taylor had suffered a knockdown closed to the end of the 12th rd. The referee, Richard Steele, gave Taylor a count. Taylor beat the count. Richard Steele ask him,"are you alright"? Taylor nodded and that's when Steele decided to stop the fight, with only 2 secs. left in the fight. It was the worst officiating decision in the history of boxing. Both fighters were undefeated and titles were on the line. Just look where Chavez was standing, on the other side of the ring. (the neutral corner). There was no way, that Chavez, all of a sudden stretches from one corner of the ring, with only 2 secs. left and wacks Meldrick Taylor, unless he's Mr. Fantastic.
