Berto vs. Collazo, Jan. 17th

Undefeated Florida native Andre Berto enjoyed a splendid 2008 season, winning all three of his fights and serving notice that he is on the verge of joining the elite mix of stars in the deeply talented welterweight division. Now he gets to show his game off versus a rock solid opponent in former welterweight champion Luis Collazo of Brooklyn, NY. The winner gets a head start in sorting out the crowded 147-pound division in 2009.

Berto's handlers matching him carefully is the understatement of the young year. Hell, son-son has a major title is what most people believe is the best division in boxing and he hasn't beaten or even fought anyone in the Top 10. He looks to have all the tools, actually reminds me of Meldrick Taylor, but wonder if his people know something the rest of us don't. That might be why they're spoon-feeding the kid.

I'm with you on this one. There's a reason, why Berto's handlers won't put him with the likes of Mosley. For one, they are matching him with a slick southpaw, who has good fighting skills but has a low KO ratio. They are matching him carefully. Even thou Collazo has a better resume, Berto has too much hand speed, power and size for Collazo to handle. Collazo's southpaw and slickness is going to give Berto some trouble early on but nevertheless, Berto will weather the storm. Mosley had comment, that Berto reminds him, of his younger days. Berto is an exciting fighter, who needs to work on his defensive skills. I'm not too sure, that he's ready yet, to take on the big guns at WW. His chin is suspect and hasn't been tested by the someone with real power. The Cosme fight revealed his lack of defense and weak chin. Berto is a working progress. There's no rush to put him with the likes of Margarito, Cotto, Shane or Williams. I'm looking forward to this fight. Berto wins but it won't easy.

Think Collazo pulls of a split decision. I think Collazo's too polished for him. Yes Berto got speed and power but no polish to his game. I think Berto will eventually get there but I just dont see him beating Collazo.

That how I see it going down but I believe that Collazo has a good chance of knocking him out. Who's on the under card?

I see it almost exactly the same way as you Captain. Except, I think if Berto polishes himself a little more, he could beat Margarito. The Cotto result is still fresh in people's mind, but in reality Margarito was outboxed by a Cotto that really isn't that goos a boxer. He's been outboxed by Clottey in the past as well. Berto is quicker and faster than those guys and could give Margarito all he could handle. The problem in that one would be does Berto have the power to make Margarito respect him and slow him from just hunting him down. On the other hand, I don't think Berto will ever be able to beat Williams.

This is an excellent matchup and I can't wait to see it.

Berto will win it but he'll have some trouble.Collazo's pretty good.

As for Berto's prospects in the future of the division,Margarito or Paul Williams will beat him handily.

Berto's a little too short to compete at the elite level-but it will be an exciting run.

My feeling is that if Shane Mosley troubled Collazo so, Berto ought to trouble him even more. Berto is as quick as Mosley and has a better jab, and Mosley won a clearcut unanimous decision over Collazo. Honestly I'd be getting more excited if Berto-Mosley were this weekend and Margarito-Clottey II were the following weekend instead.

I don't see collazo winning this fight in any fashion. collozo doesn't do to bad in any fight but he's never great ether. Plus berto's speed and mentality will be to much for collazo. The only reason this guy gets the big name fights is because they no he will put up a good fight but ultimately be defeated. berto still has a lot to learn but I take him to win this fight. o yea don't forget to watch the under card . I think it's going to be better than the main event if martinez fights like he did in his last fight. Martinez for the under card.

I think Berto is a very good boxer and is extremely fast but I got a feeling Collazo is going to win. I just hope Collazo doesn't get robed like he did against Hatton.

I actually thought last year when HBO put Berto and Mosley on the same card, they were setting up a fight between the two. A week from Saturday, will Mosley be considered too much of kinda damaged goods for Berto to get a meaningful fight against him?

He's ready Steve...

Collazo is nowhere near elite....He hits about as hard as a Nerf wiffle ball bat and isn't that slick a boxer.

This is definetly a step up for Berto compared to what he's been faced with - but that ain't saying much.

Just another scalp on Berto's mantle. I expect Collazo to confuse Berto initially but as someone previously mentioned, once Berto turns the heat up - It'll be lights out.

Too much speed...Too much power....too many different punch combinations - And did I mention Berto's speed ?

Collazo will be the larger man that night...with more reach....mainly because Berto is a relatively small welter to begin with. But as the fight goes on I think the differing skill/power/speed levels, will show just how far above Collazo that Berto is.

Collazo being a lefty may present an interesting dynamic - but nothing I think the young , hungry lion can't overcome.

Berto walks through Collazo and KO's him late in the 10th.

Rounds 8-10 will show Berto popping Collazo with anything he wants......Even that VICIOUS uppercut.

It should be a nice coming out party for Andre.

Whether he's ready or not, its time for him to step up the competition. Hell, he turned pro in 2004, and its time to stop spoon feeding him. In a wide open division, he's holding one of the major belts and he's never fought a Top 10 fighter. Whether he's ready or not, he took that belt, and now he's a contender. Its time for the young Mr. Berto to sh*t or get off the pot.

Good progression fight for Berto. Excited to get to finally see him in the ring with a Top 10 welterweight. If he looks good, and gets one more solid win over a guy like maybe Quintana, he could be ready for Williams or Margarito by the end of 2009.
