My favorite Referee was Mills Lane. I liked how he didn't take crap from anyone and he always had the top fights to officiate. I haven't found one that I liked as much since he's been out of the sport. Which Refs do you think don't do a good job and which ones should be involved in the biggest matches?

You're right...it was Meldrick Taylor. And he was never the same after that stoppage. That's a fight he had won!

Boxing needs more refs like Steve Smoger and less refs like Joe Cortez. Cortez blew the fight for Soto in the undercard of Pacman-Diaz! I don't know why HBO Cortez officiate. -- Edited by thespliffed1 at 08/01/2008 5:20 PM PDT

Arthur Mercante was probably the best I ever saw. He did most of the big fights in the 40s. 50s & early 60s. Mills Lane was always out for the fighter's best interests but did let a few go a bit long. Steele will never live down the Whitaker stoppage. Only seconds left...there didn't have to be any more punches thrown. Sounds fishy!!??!! But Steele was overall a good ref and honest guy. Marty Salmon lets them throw and he's also a judge. But Smogger is definitely a good one. A Mills Lane story. As I said in another write, Lane used to ref bouts in Tahoe since he lived in Reno. I had occasion to talk to him several times, share a beer ot two. If you'll look at some old videos/tapes of his fights, you'll notice he wears a belt that has some coloring on the back and/or sides. The belt was given to him by a convict he put away for life (as DA of Washoe County previous to being named a judge) on a murder charge. The con gave him the belt because he said that "Lane was the only person who had ever given him a fair shake in life"! Pretty interesting!

No ref is perfect, but I like Kenny Bayliss the most I would say, Jay Nady gets on my nerves but isn't bad -- THE GREATEST MUSCLE IS PRAYER

Nuemann is a weak ref. Jay Nader wants to be a star. Cortez is off his rocker sometimes ( Might be on the take , as suggested ) , but Richard Steele is the most hated in my book. I never got over how he robbed Meldrick Taylor in the Julio Ceasar Chavez fight. Taylor didn't either. I know it was a lifetime ago , but it stuck with me. Pure BS.

> Cortez is on the take... > > I like Jay Nady and a few others already mentioned. > Plus that funny looking British guy.. frak if I > remember his name I will post it. > > Why do heavy weights always use small refs? Cortez has had a couple of bad nights recently. But he did a great job in the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight, which we knew was going to be a ridiculous nasty fight to officiate. He also did a very good job in the Mayweather-Hatton fight, and probably saved Hatton from a much earlier exit. But Smoger is the best. Pat Russell did a very good job in the third Vasquez-Marquez fight ... yes there were controversial calls, but the rulings were decisive and completely defensible. Key is the refs who will allow inside fighting and let the fighters figure things out as much as possible. However that same ref has to be willing to make a decisive judgment when necessary. Also, the refs ultimate power is to stop the fight, and that is where you have to judge them the most sternly. -- Cruiserweights - what the heavyweight division would be if the heavyweight division didn't really really really suck.
