I think the smarter fight right now for Wlad would by Lyahkovich. The guy hasn't had a recent tune-up and will walk into the ring with a lot of rust. There is no rush for Maskaev. Dude will only get older and can be had at anytime.

> briggs is fighting lyakhovic for the wbo title.

It's not a done deal yet, but appears to be in the works as follows [always subject to change]:

Boxingtalk.com has been informed that Don King Productions has inked heavyweight contender Shannon Briggs to an exclusive promotional agreement, with an eye towards matching Briggs against WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich. Briggs has been in long discussions for a fight with IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, but evidently Briggs grew tired of waiting. Where this leaves Klitschko's November 11 HBO date at Madison Square Garden is unclear at the moment, but newly crowned WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev now appears to be in the drivers seat to land a coveted fight against Klitschko. Shelly Finkel, Klitschko's advisor is out of the country and unavailable for immediate comment. Briggs attorney, Michael Borao was also unavailable for immediate comment. More to follow.

sometimes the current champion takes an easy fight against easy competition just to prevent ring rust while he's getting tuned up for his next big fight. the unfortunate part of this scenario is that sometimes rocky balboa shows up and fucks up the whole deal :^O

In a way i kind of hope Briggs can pull off an upset even though i don't like him. All he is another Hasim Rahman without a lucky punch against Lennox Lewis. Briggs was suppose to be a superstar like 10yrs ago. I don't even know what he has done to earn a title shot. But Hey.

maskaev vs klitshcko would be a great fight, albiet predictable, while it lasted. it would be interesting to see how briggs does against liakhovich. i'm ambivalent where briggs is concerned since i haven't seem him fight very much. i want to believe he could be the next great american heavyweight but on the other hand i still need to see how he does against top flight competition before i'm sold. should be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Right now Vlad/Wlad and Maskaev would love to make this fight. The Briggs fight is agreed to but not signed because the fight, well, it stinks and Wlad would like something with more sizzle, like a unification!

Excellent question! The only thing that I can think is that possibly he has been waiting for Brewster's detached retina to heal so that they can engage in the rematch. The rematch will definitely be a big money fight, and, waiting on that fight for a reasonable period of time makes sense. Imagine if he fought someone else in the interim for lesser dollars and lost.

Brewster Suffered Detached Retina in Loss
It turns out losing his WBO title wasn't the worst thing that happened to Lamon Brewster on Saturday night. According to ESPN, Brewster also suffered a detached retina in his left eye during the bout with Sergei Liakhovich. Brewster believes the injury was the result of a Liakhovich jab in the first round. The injury - and the resulting "yellow blur" - may help explain Brewster's numerous wild swings and misses. It also underscores just how courageously Brewster battled in defeat. Brewster has undergone four hours of surgery on the eye and, thankfully, the injury is not considered career threatening. Brewster intends to exercise the rematch clause in his contract as soon as his eye is fully healed.

However, as my earlier post reveals, Liakhovich has now called out Wladimir Klitschko. I am not sure of the current status of Brewster's retina condition. Surely, a fight against Klitschko would outweigh the benefits of waiting further for Brewster to heal.

You must be trippin. Did you see how open Williams was against Mitchell, and Mitchell is on the decline. Williams (right now) isn't ready for PBF. PBF is a pure boxer and is more technically sound. Did you watch the Paul Williams fight against Walter Mathysse? Williams is a star in the making but PBF will murder him. He leaves himself open too much.

Nodevilplease if you read this post or anybody for that matter. Where has Liakhovich been. He beat Brewster for a heavyweight title. A bout which has my vote for fight of the year so far. After an impressive fight, I know he'd need time to rest but I haven't heard a follow up fight or anything. Anybody know whats good?

I would have loved Tyson v Tua 10 years ago. Tyson would have knocked him out. Although Ike Ibeabuchi didn't. I have to find that fight.
