I noticed how popular Marciano the greatest ever thread was, so I was wanting to know who the members feel were the greatest ever starting out in the lower weight divisions, I know there are many of these, but let's see what everyone comes up with. Make a list if you'd like starting with the lowest divisions and let's see how these discussions go!

tszyunami, you're going to have to do the speculating on the bantamweights and flyweights. I'm surprised that nobody has offered their picks at bantamweight. I figured that surely some well read boxing fan would pick up the slack for me in here at those weights. Saddler had over 100 KOs at featherweight, just behind Archie Moore and Young Stribling, if I remember correctly. That would put him at third according to Nat Fleischer's old "Ring Magazine". -- Edited by JimEarl at 11/02/2009 11:54 PM PST

I don't see Jimmy Wilde aka The Mighty Atom getting any love here! 137-5 lifetime record with 99 knockouts. Voted greatest flyweight of all-time by Ring Magazine and also voted third best puncher of all-time by Ring as well. Come on now, give it up for the Wilde Man!

I guess Sandy Saddler at featherweight I think, from the only legit fight that I've seen Joe Gans on video in that he beats Duran at lightweight and I'd bet on Mayweather to get by Duran as well at 135 but the records of accomplishment clearly favor Duran and Benny Leonard at 135.....both had Ray Arcel in their corner and he believed in records of accomplishment. Armstrong also rivals their record at 135 but I'm not so sure he would get by with using his head to push into an opponent nowadays....also have to consider that Gans fought under entirely different rules at the turn of the century with 25 rounds and much more infighting allowed then.....Gans was still a one punch KO capable fighter in any round with great defensive skills for those rules according to the old farts when I was a young fart. Ray Robinson is the all time welterweight king of coarse. -- Edited by JimEarl at 11/02/2009 11:44 PM PST

You be making me wanna go to the archives to look some of these dudes I never heard about. No Bantamweights tho? I thought they were one of the legit weightclasses from the original 8 weren't they? Impressive list Jim Earl. Got just two Great Bantams to name; Wilfredo Gomez & Orlando Canizales. Am not sure if he's a Flyweight though, Filipino champ named Pancho Villa.

Thanks Jim for the lists, you did a great job with them, I happen to agree with leaving De La Hoya off, since you mentioned you listed them in no particular order, if you could pick a number 1 from each class that you mentioned who would you put at the top of each or is that what you already did?

I thought they were one > of the legit weightclasses from the original 8 > weren't they? I like a lot of the bantamweights that I've grown up with but I don't know History's bantamweights so well. I know a lot of history's featherweights, lightweights and welterweights from following careers of some of the depression era fighters who fought in Homicide Hank Armstrong's era as well as Benny Leonard's era in the '20s. As for the great Joe Gans (not to be confused with "Panama Joe Gans" who came later): He was a subject of out and out hero worship by Ring Magazine's late editor Nat Fleischer whom I grew up reading quite a bit. I've always been fascinated by Gans and think that his biography would make a great documentary or even a docudrama....but alas his story has been overshadowed by interest in the first black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson and the legacy of the fixed Joe Gans / Terry McGovern fight was erroneously attributed to the Johnson / Willard fight in a docudrama about his life.....and that fight was probably on the level.

Wild that the Golden Boy is NOT on any list, but I hate to admit it, but that's probably correct. http://www.fightinsight.com/2009/10/27/expect-a-bumpy-road-for-glen-johnson-when-he-visits-chad-dawson-in-connecticut/

I don't know history's Flyweights & Bantamweights well enough to compile any knowledgeable list at those weights. I've always deemed featherweight through welterweight classes as the most competitive in boxing with worldwide talent. My top ten Featherweights in no particular order Henry Armstrong Alexis Arguello Manny Pacquiao Sandy Saddler Willie Pep Juan Manuel Marquez Salvador Sanchez Azumah Nelson Kid Chocolate Abe Attell My top ten Lightweights in no particular order Joe Gans Pernell Whitaker Roberto Duran Benny Leonard Henry Armstrong Floyd Mayweather Jr Shane Mosley Ike Williams Alexis Arguello Julio Cesar Chavez Honorable mention has to go to Aaron Pryor who actually was a lightweight who couldn't get a title shot in that division.....Any way you want to stack 'em Aaron Pryor goes down as great at 140 lbs. Also edged out was Tony Canzoneri. My top ten Welterweights in no particular order Sugar Ray Robinson Thomas Hearns Carmen Basilio Sugar Ray Leonard Jose Napoles Pernell Whitaker Shane Mosley Roberto Duran Felix Trinidad Wilfredo Benitez And just edged out of that ten were Henry Armstrong and Barney Ross. -- Edited by JimEarl at 10/26/2009 7:15 PM PDT
