If a person wanted to get into boxing, what skill set do you think the person has to have already within him before starting out in the sport?

i think i know what you're really asking steve. i hope this is helpful- start out fast like you always do and grunt with your shots but dont dig into them. just let them go light and quick. then approximate the time you usually gas out and act like you're gassed. now you could time your brother with a sharp counter when he opens up on you but you might hurt him so what i would do is just try to slip and block and tie him up until he gets gassed and then you put it on him. be careful always of course. its massive fun right up until someone gets seriously hurt. have fun

Good Reflexes is a must. Boxing is very complicated, but good reflexes are one of the essentials in every sport along with speed. -- Extreme HATING may cause constipation.

About 2 years ago, I bought two sets of Gloves, wraps, head gear, and the pads to hit. I've boxed with friends and my brother, and it's a lot of fun and a good way to relieve stress. What always makes me laugh is how my brother will try to block a bunch of punches, I'll be hitting him consistently throughout and then I finally get gassed, and thats when he starts. I go all out, we don't hit in the head but, I guess I just have to build up my stamina a little more because, my output was always very high. It's just been a bit of a struggle because of the many knee surgeries I've had to be able to develop the stamina to stay in shape.

As a fighter progresses, so does his skill level. Sparring and workouts become more intense. The fundamentals of boxing can be compared to the foundation of a building. Without a strong foundation, a building won't stand. To be successful, a fighter must become a student of the sweetscience.

it kinda depends on what level of the sport your talking about, but once a guy has the basics down (basic punching, defence, footwork, and an idea of strategy) the things that set a great fighter apart from a mediocre fighter are heart, punching power, and handspeed. heart is hard to train, either u want it or u dont, speed and power are kind of the same to an extent, but you can definately improve those...the other big thing to train is stamina, u cant win consistently if u gass out....theres so many aspects to the sport its hard to say one thing that is important to work on, u have to be well rounded to be good, or people will eventually exploit your weaknesses -- Edited by weimz at 05/14/2008 1:41 AM PDT

Agree, mental toughness comes first. No sissys allowed. When growing up, my dad match my 2 older brothers and myself, against other kids in the neighborhood. We weren't allowed to wear headgear and mouthpieces. When we got hit, we weren't allowed to cry. My dad would say, "crying is for girls." My dad fought in the amateurs, for Catholic Charities in Chicago. I can't say that I whole heartedly agree with my dad's methods but it taught me how to deal with life's challenges head on. First one has to learn how to throw a punch. Then comes blocking. You can't just throw punches, without blocking. Follow the yellow brick road to combos. Once you learn how to throw combos, downstairs and upstairs in pairs, your ahead of the game. You must also work on your footwork. A good workout consist of hitting the speed/punching bag, pushups, pullups, jumping jacks, eye/hand coordination, swimming, running and lite weights. Finally, comes good nutrition and rest.

I think the most important thing a fighter starting out needs to have is mental toughness. Having mental toughness enables young kids to gradually learn to take punches. Too many times I've seen kids take a shot in the nose for the first time and then call it quits. Also, a fighter starting out has to have some degree of athletic ability. The more athletic they are the more versatile the fighter will become.
