What a great job Arthur Mercante Jr. did on Saturday night

If only all referees were as good as Mercante. The guy did an amazing job, he salvaged the fight when it seemed as if Clottey was giving up. He didn't penalize or buy the crybaby stuff Clottey was whining about. I was really impressed. Far too often in fights we see referees doing more harm than good, in this case I couldn't ask for a better job.

Who's Joe Smoger? If you're talking about Steve Smoger I think hes the guy that lets fighters commit suicide in the ring by getting themselves beat to death. If you're talking Joe Cortez I disagree. Mercante is a fine ref. I like Weeks as one of the best refs in the business.

I only saw bits and pieces of the fight on youtube but since the shit kept freezing I turned it off. Anyway-Leon from www.boxingtalk.com says Mercante Jr. shouldn't ref another Cotto fight again. Now I wasn't able to really see for myself, but it seems everyone on this site witness some grade A shit on Mercante Jr's part. So could anyone see anything bias in the way he ref-or hands down he did a great job

Well then you had better add him to your signature list already clacker. Joshua "Cry Foul" Clottey, or something of the ilk.

Ref did do a great job. No Richard Steele LOL. As for Clottey or Shottey...he's on my list too! Especially since I lost money. I think his corner sucked too, telling him he was ahead after being knocked down in the 1st. Retarded...Cotto was valiant but he didn't win the fight, Clottey gave it away actin like a lil muchacha..

Mercante did a good job ...

Joshua Clottey is hard to officiate. I am not saying he is a dirty fight, but his fight vs Gutierrez there was everything short of hair pulling and eye gouging. The fight with Judah was, shall we say, eventful. When a guy like him gets in the ring with Cotto, who will defend himself, the ref has to be consistent, either call it tight, or let the boys figure it out themselves. Both options are legitimate, and Mercante chose the latter. Cotto did throw down Clottey at one point, but Clottey was roughhousing too ... it's what Clottey does, and how he gets physical ... Margarito did the same thing, but he also threw lots of punches. That is where Clottey is different, he has his roughhouse style, but way too defense conscious behind it ... defense is crucial in boxing, but not being hit is less than half the job.

Mercante just earned himself a ref's job in any of the major fights on HBO. This was a fight that could have really gotten out of hand but he stayed in control, didn't bend to any bitching, and let a great fight continue. Great job!

clinching as a tactic is illegal. ref's can take a point away for clinching.
it is better to keep silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and prove it.

Clinching is only called holding when a non-fan favorite is the one doing it. Moving is only called running when a non-fan favorite is doing it. We both know that.

from reading some of these boxing sites it's clear that our views of what boxing is waay different. We've seen some of the greatest fighters to ever lace a pair up use clinching as a tool to defeat their opponents but some of these limited boxers make their BUM fans think by not holding or clinching means you have more heart than the other guy. Now I don't care for an excessive amount of holding but buck the fighter that can't make adjustments to this.

That's why you sit down with your trainer for a couple of months and come up with a plan on what 2 do when this fighter starts holding. These limited boxers need to do more than complain to the ref when their being hold.

Clinching is a part of boxing.
