The opponent fighting the champ also has to pay the fee if he wants the title shot. And I already said, once someone gains all the belts and has that leverage as champ, he can drop one of the belts as he sees fit. But first you have to get them. Some on the other hand don't vacate any belts, Enter Roy Jones, who held every belt but the WBO and some regional belts at 175. In return he got to take a big percentage of money vs all his opponents, whether they were scrubs or top contenders. Or Hopkins, who didn't care (AS I ALREADY SAID ABOUT MOST FIGHTERS) about Ring Magazine, and wanted to unify all the big belts at middleweight even though he was the Ring champ. BELTS MATTER.

Really, I always thought the more belts you had the less money you made. IMO, it sux to pay 2 or 3 sanctioning fees when you're basically fighting for peanuts anyways.

Every belt gained is a bigger percentage vs a opponent. Why was Nate Campbell crying when he lost all his belts at 135 when he didn't make weight? Because he knew that was his best chance to make some real money without relying on Oscar Delahoya or Pacquiao using him as a Tune-up opponent.

He's fighting in the best weight range in the sport, and he's probably the best of the bunch not named Mayweather, Pacquaio, Marquez, Mosley, and Cotto. Eventually, I would think he would like to come outta the shadows and start fighting for some major dough. You're right, he isn't on any of those guys radar. And the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, nor Lamont Peterson is gonna put him on their radar either.

Everybody's gotta eat. Cro, what leverage would Bradley have in negotiations with the likes of Mayweather, Pacquaio, Marquez, Cotto, or Mosley? He could have 100 belts. He isn't getting more than 25% against Maywetaher or Pac, and he would be lucky to clear 30-35% against Marquez, Cotto, or Mosley.

You don't have to hold them but if you get them and are a unified champ, you have more clout. The superstars at HBO may not live and die by the WBC and IBF and WBA but others do. Everybody's gotta eat.

You're right Cro, no one views Pac as the 140 lb champ. And don't get me wrong, I'm not really hung up on who's the real champ at 140. I'm really thinking more along the line of Bradley putting himself in line for bigger fights. IMO, Bradley has established himself as the top 140 lb contender out there. He's already "unified" a couple belts by beat Holt, and was promply stripped of one of the belts for taking a bigger fight. The reality is, in today's boxing world, its almost impossible to hold all the belts because you'll be stripped of one for fighting a mandatory in another. So why worry about the belts anyway?

Though Pacquiao > is the linear champion, and a damn good one at that; > I'd have to rank Bradley at least on the same plane > as Pacquiao in the 140lb division. I have Bradley at the top of the 140lb division right now. He has been getting it done, foe after foe. Pac has aquired the lineal title, but that is it. One fight, and against a ripe to be taken opponent doesnt really amount to dominance in the div. Technically champ, but not by any sort of body of work in the div....thus not that meaningful...to me anyway. -- Edited by Toe2Toe at 09/03/2009 7:05 PM PDT
