Exclusive Interview with Yuriorkis Gamboa

This Saturday May 17th HBO?s Boxing After Dark will televise a triple header featuring three of the most exciting young fighters in boxing?James Kirkland, Alfredo Angulo, and Yuriorkis Gamboa. Last week Jr. Middleweight slugger Alfredo ?El Perro? Angulo was a guest on Toe-2-Toe, the FightBeat Radio Show. Angulo will be the co-featured attraction of the evening and will be taking on the rugged Richard Gutierrez.

HBO?s main event will feature one of the most talented young fighters who has been taking the boxing world by storm. With his tremendous hand speed, and KO power this phenom is quickly rising to title contention. I?m talking about ?El Ciclon de Guantanamo? from Miami by way of Guantanamo, Cuba ? YURIORKIS GAMBOA. Gamboa will be taking on Darling Jimenez of the Bronx, NY (my hometown).

Gamboa, just 2-days away from his HBO debut, took time out to talk to us about his fight with Jimenez. Unfortunately my translator was unavailable to do the show so the show was recorded completely in Spanish. However, I transcribed the audio interview, which will be available soon, for you to enjoy. Read on to see what Gamboa had to say about fighting on HBO, his favorite fighter, his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao, and much more!

To be honest I Seriously don't think all 3 will come out with there records intact. Gamboa still needs to work on keeping his hands up when he fights. If he faces a dangerous puncher later that bad habbit will cost him dearly. Kirkland is just a rushing meathead fighter much like Tyson was. Exciting, Explosive, and beatable. He will eventually be outboxed but for now I'll enjoy watching him fight. can't say much about Alfredo. He seems to have a kind of Brawling intelligence.

It's impressive. I'm glad they're moving him along fast, he does not have the luxury of wasting away a few years. I saw Jimenez' last fight. He looked good taking out Anchondo. Honestly, I don't get tired of seeing Anchondo get beat up.

There's another good match up tonight b/w Johnny Gonzalez/Pastrana. Gonzalez should win and move on to bigger things. He looked more aggresive last time out may be ha can have a similar outing.

Arce is also headlining some small ppv.

Best fight of the weekend, Mijares/Munoz. Mijares is too skilled for Munoz. That fight should be on BAD.

Yeah, though HBO main event as his 10th pro fight is pretty impressive. Live opponent too ... all 3 fights are interesting matchups, although Gutierrez is the best upset bet of the 3.

This cat is on the prime of his career, he should be doing exactly what he is doing. Looking incredible against low to midlevel opposition.
