HBO LOOKING TO MAKE JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT TOURNEY? By G. Leon Boxingtalk understands that HBO is strongly considering staging a four man tournament in the junior welterweight division. The names currently being mentioned are undefeated WBC junior welterweight champ Devon Alexander, Marcos Maidaina, Amir Khan and Victor Ortiz. Needless to say there will be more to follow. http://www.boxingtalk.com/pag/article.php?aid=18562

Much like the smw division, 140 has a bunch of guys in it that seem pretty good, yet no one clearly stands out as being the best. I like the idea of a tourny. Its nice to know that Ortiz is planning on fighting again. I think he got KOd by his promotional company in that last bout. They had this 21yo kid all fired up and sucked into the hype prior to stepping into the ring. Next thing you know, he is in the fight of his life with a bomb dropper who came to win. They should have spent more time preparing Ortiz for Maidana and less time preparing him for the glitz.

Didn't the fight > only go 4 rounds too, how can you compare? Because there is no proof that Margarito cheated in that fight. And no matter how much you want to downplay what happen that night. Margarito made Cotto quit fair and square. Cotto and Ortiz did the same thing and made similar statements. My point was if Cotto could come back from it, so can Ortiz.

Didn't the fight > only go 4 rounds too, how can you compare? 6 round fight - borderline fight of the year caliber ... ending was curious ... Ortiz is at the same stage where Vitali was after his loss to Byrd. The questions are there, but Vitali redeemed himself. Ortiz can too. After all, this is a guy who smoked Carlos Maussa - a former champ, albeit a wild flawed one. After all, this is a guy who smoked Mike Arnaoutis, who was considered by any reasonable fan a legitimate step up in class as an opponent. He got in with a banger and lost - what can be made of his career is up to him, the epitaph is not written.

Yep - has a 5 match winning streak since unretiring ... was supposed to fight Zab Judah on the Floyd undercard before Judah flaked out ...

Can't compare the 2. Eleven rounds of bricks to the face and body against a bigger man is totally different than just not wanting to fight cause the competiton level is stepped up and now you're fighting hungry fighters with heart. Didn't the fight only go 4 rounds too, how can you compare?

Cotto said that he wanted the Margarito fight stopped so he could be there for his kids. I don't see any difference in that and what Ortiz said. Is Cotto not a true prize fighter?

Its not about him losing that makes people quick to write him off. Its the way he acted during the post fiight interview that has people doubting him. I can't really blame them either, the guy bitched out and there's no way around it. True prize fighter don't run around with a mentality like that especially when they're as young as he is. He better master Floyd's art of defense and develop some super fast twitch muscles if he's gonna run around with a punk's mentality cause thats the only way he'll be successful in this sport. -- Edited by mr908 at 11/05/2009 2:07 PM PST

Well Ortiz back on the horse against Antonio Diaz on the Diaz-Maglinaggi TV opener ... good solid test for his return back and remember - Ortiz lost ... which happens - but he came off a super impressive series of results before that I don't think writing him off so easily makes a ton of sense

140 doesn't really look as good as it did a few months ago especially with Ortiz laying an egg in his last fight. Maybe if Manny fought the winner of the tourney I'd be hyped up about it but in all honesty I don't even see any names at 140 that intrigues me much. A Maidana/Ortiz rematch would be good, and thats about it. Bradley is fun to watch even tho he aint got pop and it would be nice to see if he can win this tourney. He won't be an easy win for anybody. Maybe a 140 tourney aint bad after all.

Holt gave him trouble - sort of ... but Holt lacked heart and that's why he lost Bradley wins with fitness and perseverance ... he is not great at anything, but he is a good story. He is one of those guys who will be a tough opponent, though his ability to be a game changer himself is limited.

Bradley is a good boxer, without much power, and decent chin. I've never been sold on him either.

Bradley is a decent fighter that's gotten a big push from the minor league network (Showtime.) He's one of the better fighters that fights regularly on Showtime, and they're making a major investment in him. That being said, I think he's very limited as a fighter. In reality, Kendall Holt the better fighter in the ring in their fight. He looked good against Campbell. But in reality, Campbell is a career fringe contender who got one good win and is basically been living off that for almost two years. 140 has a couple good young up-and-coming fighters like Khan, Alexander, and Maidana who I feel are legitimate threats to Bradley. It appears that after Cotto, Pacquaio is probably gonna stay at welterweight. I don't know if he'll vacate the title, but I don't see why he wouldn't with no interest in defending it. HBO having a tourney wull definitely set up a good opponent for Bradley, to establish a new 140 champ after Pac officially steps down. http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=23262 -- Edited by hitking60 at 11/05/2009 12:09 PM PST

Aside from punching power, stylistically he is exactly the sort of fighter who would stop Judah.
