I found this article on Marciano and found it an interesting topic to blog about. Here is another dead era champ who took care of business like the Klitschko's are. Does he warrant a GOAT mention ? 49-0 is impressive but who were the opponents ? Any prime heavies that catapulted to stardom ? Is his white skin working against him ? I'm asking the real fans and more importantly the arm chair historians and guys who may have saw this guy. Give it to me raw. I see his as being good, but great is a whole nother level. http://www.boxingnews24.com/2009/09/rocky-marciano-the-unappreciated-legend/#more-13518

Marciano is an all-timer. He, like RJJ, did his work very impressively at a time where competition wasn't at its peak. You can't knock him for not fighting anyone..there is nobody really out there. I rank him just outside my top ten HW of all time.

::::::::::::::::::::::Marciano / Dwight "Braxton" Qawi Marciano / Ossie Ocasio Marciano / Evander Holyfield Marciano / David Haye Marciano / Bobby Czyz Marciano / Virgil Hill Marciano / James Toney ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Toney and Holyfield.... Guys with exceptional skills, exceptional chins and deceptive speed.... David Haye has a 50 / 50 chance based on speed and skill imo... Ocasio, Quawi too stationary for Marciano's power and he'd get to them... Hill would bore him till he lost by a crushing hook from Rocky... Good list...

I'd have to agree although it's a rather new division that didn't even exist through much of my lifetime. That would be interesting. Marciano / Dwight "Braxton" Qawi Marciano / Ossie Ocasio Marciano / Evander Holyfield Marciano / David Haye Marciano / Bobby Czyz Marciano / Virgil Hill Marciano / James Toney That makes things entirely different. Anybody pick Rocky Marciano to lose to any of the above cruiserweight title holders ? A Marciano / Patterson fight was considered at one time as well as Marciano / Johansson but Rocky gave up that idea in 1959, after one month in training. Patterson, btw, would have made the greatest lightheavyweight had he fought there, imo. Just look what he did to Archie Moore in '56. I'd have to give Patterson a good chance with all of the above as well. -- Edited by JimEarl at 10/24/2009 4:46 PM PDT

Now....I could EASILY see him competing with ALL TIME GREAT success, with any of the world's best cruisers: Evander included. LMAO - I see him totally wiping his ass with David Haye

Marciano not only got "talent and balls", he is tough, and possesses explosive hands, to offset his lack of slickness/defense. He can take punches from Heavies, and naturally, I think he could take from Cruiserweights a lot better. Imagine the handicap he had while fighting Heavies during his time, weighing not more than 190 lbs. and at 5' 10" tall. That's a lot of heart on his part. That's why fighting at such disadvantage with the Heavies makes him such a special and Great fighter. IMO, He wont have a hard time with today's Cruiserweights.

Considering Marciano's size what do you think he'd do at Cruiserweight? It's really tough to compare Marciano to today's heavyweights because in some cases the guy would be up against opponents almost a foot taller than him and between 50-80 pounds heavier, it would be a very difficult task and probably would never happen. I feel Marciano is one of the greatest of all times but we can't really expect him to have fought in the HW division of today. Do I feel he could beat some of the HW's of today, yes but I just can't see the guy fighting in this division. I'm not trying to downgrade Marciano's accomplishments or saying he isn't worthy of being called the Greatest ever. I just think considering his weight and size I'd like to know how people feel he'd do against the greatest Cruiserweights.

Yeah I can surely see your point tarantadome and Marciano accomplished quite a bit while he was in the ring. I just think that weight ought to figure somehow when we're compiling top ten or top twenty lists as well as caliber of opposition......and Ezzard Charles was first rate P4P. But you're right in that it's speculative. Jim, Marciano is a Great Heavyweight fighter, IMO, but not among the top ten.

I think Rocky could hold his own with todays HW's cuz they suck. LOL! Maybe the Klit Bros would give him some issues.

I don't believe in those imaginary fights were one beats the other would make a boxer Great. It's just a way of assessing a fighter of his talent and ability and his chances of pulling off a win against a fighter from another era. This is just pure theory.

It's all speculation or just plain > opinion. Not a fact. Therefore, not a solid basis. As > the ole' saying goes, "To see is to believe". OK I'm having a hard time seeing 185 pound Rocky, with his perfect ring record against all comers, mug 245 pound Lennox Lewis even once in the real world and even if he did.....Lewis was also hell in the rematches. So you're saying that by beating these Heavies you mentioned, particularly L. Lewis, is a criteria of becoming Great. This is illogical. First, you can't pit Rocky Marciano with Lewis simply because they weren't born on the same era. Second, Rahman beat Lewis once, yet he didn't become Great. In the real world, Marciano beat all the best opponents the Heavyweight could offer him, and almost all of his fights ended in KO's. That isn't Great to you? That's one hell of an achievement. Just like Ali, Tyson and all the Greats in the Heavyweights. They won most of their fights, and they lost some. Yet they were considered Great. Were they considered Great by boxing aficianados or fans because of those what if's and could've been theories and speculations? Absolutely not. They were all Great because of what they did in the ring during their entire career. That's accomplishment. No more no less. -- Edited by tarantadome at 10/22/2009 8:31 PM PDT

generally i concur pugs but what i'm saying is that sometimes a little guy stops a bigger guy. in most of those instances, the little guy has a very noticeable edge in speed and i dont see it in marciano. you feel me? somebody might be thinking about mighty dwight qawi who didnt seem particularly fast but was crazy strong and had some fancy inside moves but below heavyweight, there's usually not such a huge weight differential until they started the day before weigh ins anyway.
