I couldn't plow through that other mess. This is the Margarito/Cotto Thread for Native English speakers, those who are literate, who don't fantasize about engaging in sexual activities with either of the fighters, etc. Feel free to begin discussion on the fight here if you: a) have something meaningful to say about the fight, based on true fight analysis and/or b) understand the English language to a high school level I'll begin. For example, I will express an opinion on the fight below. I believe that Cotto is going to win the fight with Margarito. His boxing is underrated and has improved greatly over the last few fights. That lateral movement and his jab will factor in heavily. He also hasn't shown a weak chin at welterweight, so he'll be able to take a few shots. Plus, Margarito is not a big one punch bomber. He needs accumulation, and Cotto's superior speed and skills won't let that happen. Cotto by a hard fought, bloody, close, - but clear - UD.

Yup, Rafa/Israel is about as good as you can get in boxing. -- Steve Kim "If Cortez was officiating game six of this past NBA Finals, he probably would've found a way to give that game to the Lakers"

It will be a good fight no doubt about it. As for Fight of the Year. It will be hard to overcome Marquez/Vasquez III.

This will probably be a great fight, but honestly not one that there can be much of a conversation for. People arguing Margarito will win can only say, he's bigger and throws a lot of punches. People thinking Cotto will win say well he has better short punches, he can go forward and backwards and overall he's just a better fighter. If Cotto wins by tko it will be b/c of body punching. If Margarito wins is b/c Cotto decided to go to war. In order for Margarito to have a chance Cotto has to have the wrong game plan. -- Steve Kim "If Cortez was officiating game six of this past NBA Finals, he probably would've found a way to give that game to the Lakers"

Yeah...I've been thinking about this lately...and it seems to me that Cotto is the bigger puncher...The one thing Margarito brings to the table (other than a seemingly granite chin) is a tenacity that is hard to match. Fucker keeps coming and coming...and a lot of people fold under that kind of pressure. Again...I see Cotto battering Margarito down the stretch to win a clear cut UD.

BTW, I think Cotto is a crisper, more accurate and therefore more powerful puncher than Margarito at 147.

I pretty much see it like jme does. Cotto is just a better fighter. He will have most of the advantages unless he gets dragged into too many exchanges. Then it's AM's fight. But overall have to give the edge to Cotto to get a close UD. 116-112 type scores. We also could see a kd or two from either fighter.

I 'm with Fudo. Cotto has better hand speed. He throws the straighter and quicker punches. Margarito will fight valiantly but I just don't see him having enough. Activity is not going to beat Cotto. Clean effective punching will and I think Cotto will land the cleaner shots. Margarito has shown his whole career he can take a punch so I'm not expecting a TKO but if Cotto manages that I will bee impressed.

I agree with this 100%. Once Cotto realizes he can't blow him out the water, he will use his other skills and stick and move. Cotto might not have Mayweather skills but Margarito can't deal with anything that isn't standing ready to trade with him. Hell even Paul Williams looked like a masterful boxer in some rounds particulary the 12th against The Tijuana Tornado. -- Edited by CroatianSensation at 06/30/2008 11:18 AM PDT

this fight will not be Fight of the Year. i think cotto will outboxed margarito, not allowing him to set his feet to punch. AM never uses his height or jab making him shorter which is a plus for cotto. his shots are not straight, they loop all over the place if your not a stationary target. this wont be a war, they might have a few moments but miguel is just too fast, too skilled too hungry for margarito. 117-111 UD Cotto.
