From Dan Rafael's blog.

? Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told me the other day the Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz lightweight title bout did between 225,000 and 250,000 buys on HBO PPV. To put it nicely, Arum is ever the optimist. I asked industry folks who are far less prone to exaggeration than Arum and was told that the fight will be lucky to crack 200,000. Lucky. It just goes to show you that no matter how great Pacquiao is, without a known foil he can't do serious business on his own.

Pacquiao's pay-per-view fights with more established stars Erik Morales (a trilogy), Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera all did excellent business. But Diaz, as likeable as he is, was a huge underdog and had never been on HBO before being put into a major pay-per-view main event. Despite tireless efforts promoting the fight, doing interviews and making public appearances, Diaz was essentially an unknown, even though he held a title.

Now, Arum is talking up a November pay-per-view fight between Pacquiao and junior lightweight Edwin Valero, who is just as unknown as Diaz. Valero, who is from Venezuela and based in Japan, has appeared once on U.S. television (in a small pay-per-view in December). He does not speak English, so he won't come close to being able to approach Diaz's media relations effort and he has no particular fan base in America. If Arum goes through with his plans for Pacquiao-Valero, especially with such a glut of pay-per-view events on the fall schedule, the fight will be lucky to crack 150,000 buys. Lucky

They'll have an easier time promoting this one than the Diaz bout.
This will be a fire fight...that wont be too tough to sell.

It doesn't matter if Valero is superman in Asia, if the fight is on ppv all of the revenue will come from the US, and here NOBODY knows who he is, so the ppv numbers would also very poorly.

Add to the fact that the fight will be in the US and not in Asia and once again it will be Pacman trying to carry a ppv by himself, something he has been unable to do.

Valero is well known in Asia though. If Manny fought him over there, it would probably be considered a pretty big fight.

Latest news here in the Philippines that Valero was cleared by LasVegas Athletic Comission to fight Pacman on Nov 15. So it will be the knockout artist Velero vs Pacman.

I dont know about you guys but this seems to be an interesting fight. I remember Barera once asked if who among the current boxer can defeat Manny. He's answer was... Valero.

Valero, like Pacman, stated that he too has problems making the super featherweight weight limit so he will be fighting Manny at LW.

It sounds like the two leading candidates to face Manny are Soto or Valero. Both would be a ppv later this year. After seeing the poor numbers Manny's ppv did a couple of weeks ago, I'm surprised his next bout against an unknown would once again be on ppv.

Nobody know who Valero is and Soto has enough L's on his record to turn off the casual fan.

Anyway I hope he ends up fighting Soto, who will give him a solid scrap, as oppose to Valero who basically turned into a bigger version of Ponce Deleon.

He's so featherfisted, his hands are endorsed by the Audobon Society.

I dont think it will happen. News around here in the Phils is that Manny is fighting Valero on Nov 8. The deal is as good as signed and sealed.

Whoever Pac is fighting come Nov or Dec is always considered a good fight. With Pac, you'll always get your money's worth coz Manny always come to fight and make sure you'll be entertained regardless of whatever the dumb fans of his opponents say.
