Pavlik vs. Hopkins

I just saw that Pavlik and Hopkins will fight in October! Is this fight already been signed and what do you guys think are Pavlik's chances or Bernard's chances of winning.

I definitelly think this is a dangerous fight for Pavlik considering the cagey style of Hopkins and this fight will possibly launch fights between Jones and Hopkins, Hopkins and Calzaghe again, or Pavlik and Jones or Calzaghe. All of which are blockbuster fights.

I don't know though I think Pavlik is more active in the ring and has shown to have a pretty good chin although I could see him getting hurt maybe even moreso than he did against Taylor in their first fight. Pavlik's defense has shown improvement and his jab is stellar and punches very accurate. Hopkins is a very tricky fighter though and uses his head a lot. I could see Pavlik having a James Toney like performance against Hopkins, it being one of those fights where we see the fighter age before our very eyes.

I break down the advantages like this:

Speed: Hopkins
Power: Pavlik
Workrate: Pavlik
Jab: Pavlik
Defense: Hopkins
Reflexes: Hopkins
Experience: Hopkins
Footwork: Hopkins
Chin: Hopkins
Stamina: Even
Aggressiveness: Pavlik
Heart: Pavlik

Hopkins-Tito was originally scheduled for 9/15, & was postponed for two weeks.

Hopkins fought Joppy two years after he beat Trinidad.

Kelly knows how to box, B-Hop knows how to FIGHT.

I'm pretty sure that B-Hop has had more fights with out gloves , for much higher stakes. ( IE: Graterford showers ) than Pavlik.

Pavlik PW next. Superfight it!

Pavlik should fight nothing but the toughest, & train with B-Hop ( Rocky / Apollo thing ) while going to Golden Boy.

He's a basic boxer, & damn good at it.

I've always been a B-Hop fan, maybe it's because he reminds me of my closest friend, who should have followed B-Hop's path in boxing.

The last time I bet against B-Hop was against Trinidad. We were in NY, 9/11 was a smouldering wound. I still rooted hard for B-Hop ( I was in a room full of drunk puerto ricans & hell yeah I was scared LOL. I almost got my a$$ kicked just for HBO showing a replay of Hopkins throwing the PR flag on the floor.
:())

To me B-Hop's career was over then. ( 32 is old for a MW, or any boxer. Hagler, Leanord, Hearns etc., all retired at 32. )

( To me B-Hop is a mix between Leanord & Hearns that was trained pre boxing, to defend against blows that are illegal in boxing. )

Don King had (IMO) manipulated a MW Tournament for Tito to K.O. B-Hop for his crowning moment @ MW. B-Hop, the aging, over the hill Champ. B-Hop fought a war, I mean WAR!!! with Antwon Echols, who was actually the truth at middlewieght. ( Ok, Pavlik would K.O. Echols , mid fight, but would take a beating in the process.)

Echols was a good, hungry fighter.

B-Hop fought a war with William Joppy, another MW who was headed, like Echols , down the path of greatness.

I think B-Hop fought a hard decision win against Joppy, while Tito destroyed, & embarassed Joppy, bouncing him around the ring, dazed , early in the fight!

B-Hop uglied his way through the tournament, while Trinada virtually steamrolled through his opponants, like he's always done.

Same fight as with Pavlik, Trinidad , Tarver , etc,.
B-Hop knows how to not get hurt. In his pre boxing formation, defense is priority. It doesn't have to be flashy, or popular, it just has to work. He has faced many one punch K.O. artist.

If you give B-Hop the time, & distance , he will win with his mix of countering / leading style. Pavlik doesn't have that explosiveness in his style. ( MIKE TYSON ) Once Pavlik adjust that, he will reign until he meats a B-HOP type fighter.

Graterford showers are probaly the last place you want to get knocked out at. Same with the streets of Philly!

Hey guys! Be easy on Pavlik!

He fought his best & would have K.O.'d all but 5 fighters in the sport on that or any given night at the wieght!

No shame for Pavlik , losing to a great. B-Hop lost to RJJ & his first fight & turned it around.

Personally, I think ( besides B-Hop of course ) that the wieght gain played a role in Pavlik's loss.

Different fight @ 160, but with same result.

He didn't just school him fellows. Let's be real here. Bernard whooped Pavlik's ass and embarassed him in the process. I don't think mentally anyone could come back from that. It was less like the Quintana schooling of PW in their first fight and more like the one-sided beating Joe Calzaghe gave Jeff Lacy.

I don't know what the hell was wrong with Pavlik but he was tense and could not loosen up or get into any kind of rhythm. Well of course Bernard was his problem who has obviously been holding something back cause I have never seen him fight like that. I mean he threw SO MANY punches and he never let Pavlik off the hook. Damn what a good fight. I wish Pavlik had done a little more and it would have been even better. I don't know if he'll be able to come back fromt his mentally. He was just to stubborn in there to try anything different or anything his trainer was telling him.

Good post, monger... And I gave Pavlik the nod for the same reason. It seemed like a fair bet that Hops would fade beyond the middle rounds. Never even came close...

Hops was 6 pounds heavier, considerably lighter on his feet and his hands were faster for rounds 1-12.

*** I still can't believe how dominating Hopkins was! He took this kid to boxing school & then gave him some homework to do when he gets back home. I still don't like Hopkins as a person but as a boxer, he impressed me tonight by not only being in top shape but mentally sound & fresh from begining to end! Back to the drawing board for Pavlik to chalk this one up to gaining some needed experience, cause he's still middle-weight champ! Big money made & a well needed lesson taught tonight by a pro. slick fighter to an up & coming young champ. Boy I was wrong big time tonight, due to personal likes & dislikes about #2 fighters. What a Mama-luke! ***

Looks like we both don't know shit, eh, Boogie ?

I'm impressed with the old man, and don't know what to think about Pavlik? He brought absolutely NOTHING to the fight, and looked like someone in the top twenty, instead of the division champ.

Hopkins deserves everyone's respect for this one, and I will be the first one to say, "I WUZ WRONG"...:(

One thing I can say about this match is WOW!!!!!

This entire fight was exactly the opposite of what I thought it would be. I was one of the many who thought that Pavlik would win this fight. I thought he would win on points. There were many who thought Pavlik would win by KO, which I heavily disputed.

I was sitting on the edge on my chair all night long after I seen B-Hop win the first and second round. I seriously thought that Pavlik was holding back to wait for Hopkins to wear him self out, but it didn't happen.

What I have gathered from this fight is a generation of fighters who truly know the sport, verses a generation of fighters who "think" they know the sport. Hopkins schooled Pavlik in every way possible.

Hopkins went into the fight knowing that Pavlik would expect him to play the "shell" game that he normally does, but he didn't. Hopkins didn't play his normal game and that is what won him the fight.

From this point, I am wondering what is left for the new blood of the sport. Do they learn from the truly "greats" or do they continue on their path of what they think is great?

** For the record, I thought Pavlik would win by points, but i was rooting for B-Hop, just like I did in the Hopkins/Calzaghie match! Furthermore...I think this is the year of upsets and I think Jones will school Calzaghie!

After this fight I think Dawson's inexperience will play a big factor. And Bernard had some of the best minds in the game in his corner for this fight. That won't hurt him at all. And lets not forget. Everyone thought this fight would be a mismatch. And it was. LOL!

He should think about just that though. At least
after the winner of Calzaghe/Jones.

If that fight happens and he wins. He should go after Dawson and then retire.
