Love all of this Gamboa talk... Offensively he is da SHIT! Needs to show or practice more defense in there...

It is one thing to do this stuff with 4 and 6 round fighters, but could see real trouble with top 10 ranked fighters if his hands stay low.

Nice reflexes and good power for the weight class... Will definitely be watching this young fellas rise to a championship...

Onestly I'm a bit surprised there's not more talk about Saturday's fights on these boards. It was an excellent card, but it seems nobody was truly interested.

GAMBOA: GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS

By William Dettloff

There was news to be gleaned from Yuriorkis Gamboa?s win Saturday night over Darling Jimenez. Some good, some bad. The bad was that he appeared so committed to his offense that he almost qualified as an easy mark for Jimenez? counter left hooks and right hands. Against a guy who?s been active and has his better stuff as a result, you can see how he could get worn down and taken out in a hard fight. When he gets hit, it?s flush.

Along the same lines, the cuffing right hand that Jiminez landed to score that fourth-round knockdown hints that Gamboa?s chin is not all we might like it to be. To have been knocked down twice already in just 10 fights suggests that his jaw isn?t made of the sternest stuff.

That?s not necessarily the worst news one could get. Gamboa might have the same malady that afflicted Felix Trinidad, who suffered many flash knockdowns early in his career and even in title defenses, none of which contributed to losses. Knocking down the 147-pound Trinidad merely meant that you were a few minutes from taking a severe beating.

That differs dramatically from scoring a knockdown over, say, Terry Norris, one of the young Trinidad?s contemporaries. Flooring Norris meant you were mere seconds from having your hand raised. Some guys when they go down they?re already gone. Some not. Gamboa appears to be in the latter category.

Good news is that for all his reckless bluster in there, Gamboa realized by about the midway point that he wasn?t going to get a big stoppage win and concentrated on overwhelming his man with volume. It wasn?t always pretty and a lot of it was the kind of loosey-goosey stuff we don?t expect to see from a guy with all that amateur experience. But in the last round of a fight he clearly was winning by a landslide, he was winging shots trying for a late kayo.

There are worse ways to finish a fight, and if Gamboa isn?t everything he?s been touted to be, it?s too early to say now anyway. Give him a chance. He might get there.

Some random observations from last week:

A more assertive light heavyweight would have gotten rid of Chris Byrd long before the ninth round. Still, Shaun George impressed. If Tommy Brooks can just get him to keep his hands moving, he might make some noise.

Ruslan Provodnikov, who beat Brian Gordon on the same card, has the opposite problem: A little attention to defense will do this kid, who is a serious puncher, a world of good.

How fun was it to see Koba Gogoladze, owner of maybe the most visually annoying style in the game, get pancaked when he was on the verge of a first-round kayo win?

I don?t care how many guys James Kirkland blows out, Anne Wolfe scares me more than he does.

Jorge Arce will last a lot longer and be a lot more fun if he?s matched solely with guys who will stand in front of him and punch. But not too hard.

Hey, how about we forget all this general election nonsense and handle the selection of our President the way boxing names its champions? Instead of having just one Commander-in-Chief?that?s so 1950s?we?ll have a dozen or so. Everyone who ran in the primaries gets to be ?Co-President.? How?s that? They?ll have to pay a fee to be sanctioned, of course, but nothing?s free. Anyway, this way everybody makes a few bucks, nobody?s feelings get hurt, and we?ll draft a law making it a crime to call the Co-President title ?meaningless.? Who?s with me?

Admit it: Like me, you?re more interested in Azumah Nelson-Jeff Fenech III than you are in James Toney-Hasim Rahman II.

That's the thing, he did not win every second of the fight. Berto/Rivera you can say that. Rivera had one great moment, but Gamboa/Jimenez that's not the case. Jimenez hit him plenty of times with CLEAN counter hooks and made the fight fairly competitive. Gamboa easily won the fight, but there's a reason why his handleres started panicing.

The Gamboa comparisons I heard were not Toney, so much as a bonzai classic Iron Mike. That was evident, though yeah this was a step up and Jimenez made him work. Gamboa got knocked down, but he got up and won every second of the fight otherwise.

On a night like Saturday it is easy (and on this board certainly not at all infrequent) to call every prospect overrated who does not evoke Baddest Man on the Planet Shock and Awe. Angulo impressed me the most only because I KNOW the guy he beat was a damn good fighter -- whereas I knew less about the others although Darling jimenez clearly had been in with some good guys.

Julio vs either Angulo or Kirkland would be an appetizing possibility. Kirkland-Julio was one of the fights tossed around here certainly.

one bad performance and his team gets fired. People just starting to follow boxing, this is the reason you don't go crazy about prospects. You never know how they're going to react to new situations. Gamboa is an incredible talent, but if you saw his previous fights(which you can on youtube) THAN YOU KNEW HE WAS NO TONEY. James Toney doesn't fight with his hands down. YOU KNEW THAT AS SOON AS HE GOT OFFENSIVE HE DROPPED HIS HANDS. That's one of the reasons I said he reminded me of a young Guzman. B/c he was so much bigger and faster than his opponents that he would over aggresive and drop his hands.

Jimenez was a good test. It's all up to Gamboa now to learn from his mistakes and get better. If he doesn't he will get stopped by a better fighter.

This was my first time watching Angulo and Kirkland. WOW!!!!!! Tell me when those two are fighting again. Both of the guys they fought where not test, they where CONTENDERS. Kirkland blew out a guy who is a pretty good fighter and Angulo knocked out the best name on Cottley's resume. As Steve Kim said it, " Just my opinion, but at the same stage of their careers, Angulo is a more technically sound, sharper punching version of Antonio Margarito. We'll find out if he has the staying power and toughness of 'the Tijuana Tornado'.

You want a fight of the year type of fight. Get Julio and Angulo in the same ring.

That's a bit rash. Gamboa was ready and primed. It just so happened that Jimenez had his own ideas about whether or not he was going to be a pushover. Jimenez showed some heart and determination. He also went in with the idea that he could win. No fighter has ever knocked out every single opponent.

I must say that is a good start for the young Cuban. They could do a lot worse than Floyd Mayweather Sr., but I don't know how much English Gamboa speaks. That could be a problem. Of course, Floyd Sr. speaks a barely discernable form of English most times, so it may work out after all. :^O
