This is not about bringing the show back, this is about the show: If any of you could give me your thoughts on the brief affair between Hawkins and Ruthie, not as a writing device (dealing withe the issue of Ben's virginity etc) but rather your take on the how or why you think it might have happened; as if you knew these people and visited them regularly and suddenly you began to witness this affair, what would you think of it, and what is your take on why it happened. This situation happened to me recently, I am around Ruthie's age, and he was older then Ben, but not by much. He is gone now (very recently) and as nonsensical as this request is, I just think it might help me heal. He also initiated the affair and was attracted years before I even realized it. If this is just too personal for this thread, I understand completely. It's just that Ben and Ruthie keep rolling through my mind. And no one knows these two amazing people like we do. Thanx everyone, Hawkins.

I always liked the relationship between Ben and Ruthie. It was an interesting twist that, among other things, said that Ben had adjusted to these people completely, and saw them as they really were. But it was doomed from the start. Truth is, the writers were just using it as a device to get rid of Ben's probable virginity, I think. And the real love story is Ben and Sofie, of course. More importantly, I think, Ben wanted to protect Ruthie from the possible consequences of being around him. He didn't yet know how to control the "gift", and the snakes turning on each other showed that the things he was doing were fundamentally "unnatural." He didn't want to hurt her inadvertently. -- ---------------------------- Click here to see what's new in "Marion's New York," newly updated Feb. 17, 2008. http://www.marionsnewyork.com

This is strictly my opinion on the relationship between Ruthie and Ben.I at first welcomed it.You could see the attraction between the two and I had no problem with it.But after they had sex I was a bit thrown off.It just didnt seem to fit.Maybe if Ruthie had just let Ben sleep that night the relationship would not have spoiled.Instead if they had taken it slow it may have blossomed into something real. Now this is saying nothing about your relationship.I myself have a younger husband and I feel that there is nothing wrong with that. There is always the risk of the younger partner feeling the need to explore and maybe the feeling of being tied down was too strong?I worry about this as my husband is 6 years my junior, and yes I kick his ass whenever he calls me his "old lady"!

Basically blackwater types wearing another color. Adrienne Barbeau is too pretty, she is hypnotic in her own right; and I'm not talking about her figure either, its her eyes....sweet! I'd love to meet her someday, but on the otherhand, I might make an idiot of myself. As for my Ruthie...she and I were in two different galaxies. I was really more of a diversion; perhaps Hors dourves...she took my heart like some godess gulping down a live oyster. It was a very long time before I got involved again after her. I still miss her even now, after a fashion. See Ya... -- Bring back Carnivale....or I'll be shakin' some dust of my own, HBO!

I BELIEVE THAT BEN, HAVING LOST HIS MOTHER WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO BE CLOSE TO, AND IT DIDNT HURT THAT SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL. I BELIEVE HE GRAVITATED TOWARD HER BECAUSE OF HER KINDNESS AND SHE DIDNT PUSH HIM ABOUT HIS PAST AND BADGER HIM SHE WAS JUST THERE FOR HIM, A KIND HAND AND HE COULDNT RESIST HER EVEN IF HE FELT IT WAS WRONG AT THE TIME WHEN HE WAS NOT SLEEPING HARDLY EVER

First, a little story. I was in Borders today thumbing through Adrienne Barbeau's autobiography. She wrote a lot on her actually securing the role of Ruthie, but the most interesting part was spent on a certain costar named Taxi. Not only did this great snake completely savage her back, leaving her in pain throughout most of the filming, but he went on to relieve himself not once but twice, the second time adding even more pathos to the "almost" death scene in part two (I think)) Snakes only do this deed once a month, and what is left of the rat when it's expelled is beyond nasty. Lucky Ruthie. Adrienne spoke warmly of everyone in the cast, and said she missed the show terribly. She's not alone. Mancosbob--you interest me---especially this book you carrying around inside of you. If you're talking about people in the media as in Washington media, then that's gonna be a mighty big book. I understand your hesitation, the truth has never been more costly. Still, it peeks my interest! As for me and my Ben. We were both so fiercely independent, that it became more and more difficult to be vulnerable. In some ways we really were, but in other ways we were strangers. Anyway, catch ya later, Hawkins

Thanks Hawkins...people keep telling me to write, I have been told that by nearly everybody I deal with on any regular basis. I do scribble a bit, but most of my "stuff" is crammed into my aging gray matter trying to get out. I have a book waiting to be written, but dare not do so just yet; as it is sort of a tell all, expose' about a group of people frequently in the news, and hardly ever in a good way. Back to the original subject though...I never really addressed your stated desire I fear; allow me to correct my failure. Lets see now, what is my take on how and why Ben and Ruthie hit it off so well. Ben missed his mom. Initially, that was what helped them gravitate towards each other; but, Ben had seen Ruthie reach for that towel at the showers, which added an extra level of interest which he tried to hide from. Ben was/is one big ball of tension and confusion, which all guys are, at that stage in their lives; but he, even more so, because of his power. Ben is confused, because he is receiving attentions from several of the carny women; just not what he is comfortable with, he is overloaded, not to mention creeped out very often. If he had a fantasy life, I imagine it was somewhat 'vanila'; but I am equally certain that there was some hidden darkness there too. Ruthie just caught him when he was too tired to really resist her; I think Ben was trying to "save" himself (which is a comfortable position when you have no clue what to really do). The morning after Ben finally woke up, he was electrified, even somewhat protective of Ruthie; that was untill Lodz and Lila creeped him out by telling him about Scudder and Ruthie. Ben must live within his imagery, I think that is only retreat; so when Scudders taint was added to the soup, Ben lost it. Now, if Ben had met Ruthie under other circumstances, who knows. I know if I could have found some way to stay with the lady I spoke of before, I would have done so. She taught me to take my time; she taught me how to please her....if I ever responded well to anything, it was when her actions told me I got an "A" on the final. I was willing as all heck, but I lacked the resources she needed right then. Ben's TV character probably had similar ideas...so did your Ben....your own feelings of inadequacy can be more powerful than anything on earth. They often cause us to doubt ourselves and think dark thoughts. -- Bring back Carnivale....or I'll be shakin' some dust of my own, HBO!

I was just out of high school, when one of my friends mom entered my life...the age diff was about like Ben and Ruthie....I worshiped her; she was not the first, but she might still be the best, and now I am Ruthies age myself. There were just too many social "issues"; plus her estranged husband sort of came back. He'd been away at the Graybar Hotel. I had looked at her for quite a while too, but as a pretty naive youth, just locked those thoughts away in the "out of my league" locker with Marilyn and all of her ilk. When the reality came onboard that I had a shot, and a good one at that; I jumped in with both feet. She had been alone for quite a while. She was not what you'd call hot looking, but she was sensual and ladylike in every way you could imagine. I suppose that really scarry thing is something I don't dare share, because it might allow one or two people to put names and places together; and last I heard, she was still alive and living back east. -- Bring back Carnivale....or I'll be shakin' some dust of my own, HBO!

PureUncut, We are alike. I'm in fine company. I've written this post three times, telling you all about my political beliefs, my passion on film (the two best this year: The Lives of Others and The Lookout) my strong belief that we are at the end of this country facing martial law and the NAU. (I'm making a short doc on the NAU) But all saga aside, I think you're cool. That's it. I really do. Hawkins.

Marionj2---it's been a long time, how are you?! I hope everything is going well for you. I guess I've been waxing nostalgic, been playing my Carnivale DVDs and missing everybody. You know how it goes. Thank you so much for your great post. God Bless, Hawkins.

Hawkins, I didn't respond when you first posted, because I had to think about it. Frankly, I don't think there's a straight man in the western hemisphere who doesn't have the hots for Adrienne Barbeau! If it happened to people I knew - I think I'd be a little intrigued, but basically I'd feel it was their business. The risk with a relationship like this is, of course, that they go in different directions, as Ben and Ruthie did. And I guess you did, too. But if you look back and smile, what else is there? -- ---------------------------- Click here to see what's new in "Marion's New York," updated July 8, 2007. http://www.marionsnewyork.com

Titannia, thank you so much for answering. I was so sure no one would respond, your sharing meant a lot to me. It's funny, but what I miss about Carnivale, along with all the intensely gorgeous cast, is that jumpy, crawly atmosphere of longing and seduction. Eyes wide, skin all warm and musky (Hawkins getting glass cold water) Anyhow, I guess seduction is like a great compliment, it comes out of nowhere, its incredible when it happens, it lingers for a while then it disappears into your past. On a rare occasion you remember it and smile. Contrary to popular belief this post was not written by David Lynch. Again thanx for you time, Titannia, and if you ever figure what this post is all about will you tell me? Hawkins.
