Valerie, Mickey and the cast of Room and Bored are flown in to NYC to be introduced to the media at the network's Upfronts. In the Big Apple, Valerie gets stiffed on a perk, misses out on a meal, frets about her stepdaughter Franchesca's dinner guests back in LA, and fears the worst as the network prez intros the cast.

i totally agree. this does seem like an act of desperation to save her career, after this she is going to need her own comeback, as well as micheal patrick king. i have totally lost my ability to think of him as a ground breaking writer. i can't believe he even endorsed such horrible tv. what a flop. who is the idiot at hbo who makes the decisions for programming? they should hit the unemployment line!! as many other people said, this is not network television, we pay for this! why then is it that i'm paying for a line-up of horrifyingly bad(and that's being nice)shows? why can't we have carnival if we want it? the only show left for me is the wire, and why should i have to pay the greedy creeps at hbo when i can wait and get it on dvd. everyone i know agrees and all are on the verge of canceling all their hbo services, sounds like a train i myself may jump on!! hbo is on it's way down the shaft real fast unless they do something quick, and the something they should do is listen to their PAYING customers. r.i.p. carnival, sex and the city, and all the other great ones!! as for the comeback, this is absolutely the worst 30 minutes of tv i've ever encountered. there are not enough negative words to describe this show. and to those people who keep saying "you just have to get it" i'm sorry you have such boring lives and expect the rest of us to have to be utterly bored and tortured with it. r.i.p. hbo, for you are dying!!

I think the trend of 'making it in Hollywood' is pretty indicative of a very arrogant approach from HBO so I'm beginning to think of them as on my list too. We are in pretty self centered times and to have all these series about entertainment just shows the industries self importance. Canrivale showed a very epic fantasy, Sopranos, some real family drama as a twist in an old theme, Six Feet Under also delved into some very dramatic family conflicts. But with this trend it's almost as if they are trying to say "look how interesting our lives are in entertainment". But it's, well, not. Perhaps they are so insecure about not having their own lives, being slaves to rating and trends and all, that they have to market it to others in order to validate it. Not all of us are into seeing a bunch of spoiled jerks on Entourage make asses of themselves (that one is on in the background as I type and I can't see, for the life of me, why this would be entertainment), hear the trials and tribulations of Larry David that adds up to just goofball crap, see Lisa Kudrow's insecurities, and certainly not the boring desperations of Unscripted. Some of us do however want to see thematically challenging story lines and drama such as Carnivale and Oz. People watch movies and movie channels to escape or experience something they don't often get, maybe a pumped up situation they can relate to. Idle reality, whether scripted or not, whether Hollywood or a Desert Island, it's everywhere and most have long gotten the point that people's lives are somehow very much alike and what's making it "reality" is now quite boring. This is not what we are all looking for. At this point it's nothing but lazy. And to think that Michael Patrick King wrote some of the funniest and interesting scripts on this channel... But this stuff? Please, HBO Execs, you are not that important and we're not that interested.

I'm a long time HBO fan, and have enjoyed all their series until the recently departed Carnivale, may it RIP. I love that the The Comeback is their newest addition. I was never a huge Friends fan, but I love Lisa Kudrow in this format. It's so uncomfortable to watch, that its funny, akin to Curb. And for someone who has been in LA and who has a spouse in the entertainment biz, this is a great take on the bullshiat that is Hollywood. For those who don't get it, don't watch! Keep up the good work, HBO.

I agree with other posters, and am glad that there are those out there who "get it". It is the same kind of humor that goes on in Curb, The office, etc. If you rewatch episodes you catch little things that are so hilarious the second time around, going on in the background. Like in this ep, after the upfronts,Val is on the phone and pauses by the men's room...you see Paulie G and the other writer run back into the room when they see her outside. I love the Paulie G character -- he is the truth everyone wants to tell Val while his partner is the diplomatic one. So funny. Brilliantly done, but it is a special kind of humor.

I haven't posted here for awhile because I didn't want them to get too many postings and think they are something to watch. I agree with your assestment of the situation at HBO. Someone hasn't been listening to the SUBCRIBERS. In 1978 I worked a telethon at our cable station, introducing HBO to our area of the country. We were so glad to have more than just 4 channels to watch. We gladly paid for HBO to watch movies that we didn't have to rent. Now all the stations out there are competing for shows. There are not that many good shows out there, period. Alot get canceled before the 3rd or 4th show, on network tv. Pay channels have a captive audience. We pay for the channel, so by damn, we're gonna watch. It is insulting to us(the SUBSCRIBERS) for HBO to trifle with us as you have done. You set up a schedule for the Sopranos and then change it 3 to 4 times. Change nights for other shows trying to compete with the network tv audience, and last but NOT LEAST: YOU CANCELLED CARNIVALE. The least you could do is re-run the whole thing again so we can record it for our own libraries. Since we did pay for it! HBO is on my sh*t list big time. Their only saving grace has been Deadwood. I admit it's not for everyone but alot of people love it like we did Carnivale. This show is. . well. . on my sh*t list too. I will admit that I watched ep. #2 because I couldn't find the remote to change it. I have a bad back and can't get up and down easily. I wished I had gotten up and changed the freakin' channel. It was VERY PAINFUL to watch and with my back I KNOW PAIN! My God, how much more of this dribble do you expect us to take?

I know exactly what you mean. I loved Lisa Kudrow on Freinds and I find this character that she plays to be annoying and pathetic. I hope that HBO decides to bring back Carnivale and cancel this show. It is really a shame that a show as good as Carnivale is cancelled and replaced with this awful show!!

THIS SHOW SUCKS! BRING BACK CARNIVALE!

You guys know how right before an hbo series they do a little 1 second clip of all the great series, like sopranos, six feet under, deadwood, and CARNIVALE. Well, now they've replaced the Carnivale image with The Comeback image. Ick! I just want to throw up! This show is SO bad, I can't even make myself watch it. I watched 10 minutes of each episode and there is NOTHING interesting going on. I thought hbo was all about new, unique, exciting, intelligent tv. I guess not any longer. They ignored fans and cancelled Carnivale (one of the most fasinating shows I've ever seen), only to add ANOTHER 30min show on making it Hollywood. Count them--3 shows dedicated to making it in Hollywood--Unscripted (the pretend reality show on getting started in Hollywood), Entourage (a guy's fantasy Hollywood show), and now The Comeback (the "chick" Hollywood show). How original of you, hbo. Not only do all of these shows have the same premise, they all suck. The quality and intelligence of these 3 shows is more suitable on cable tv and even your rival, Showtime, so maybe you should sell to them and move on to exceptional, groundbreaking shows that your fans are used to. I've been a loyal hbo subscriber and advocate for over 10 years and I hate to say this, but I can no longer praise and recommend this station to anyone. If Six Feet Under wasn't on now, I would have cancelled hbo last month when they canned Carnivale. I don't know who hbo has been listening to for the last year or so, but it sure isn't their fans. Farewell hbo. www.savecarnivale.org

You have got to be kidding. There's no entertainment value to this show. I have watched both episodes and am not wasting another minute watching it. The hair dresser doesn't even come off as one. That jogging suit that Lisa wears makes her look like a middle age hick. Her roll is so irritating that they should have bleached her hair blonde. Maybe then, her roll would make better sense. It plays like a bad spin off of Fat Actress!

I do have to admit that the first couple of minutes of the show really annoyed me because I wasn't really sure how to take it. But, once I got into the show, I found myself hooked. I am very impressed with Lisa Kudrow's acting. It's like she isn't even acting at all. I fully fall into her character and lose sight that it is really her. I am tickled by the innocent, naive, and sometimes clueless ways that she handles embarrassing and awkard situations. I have now added the series to my Tivo season pass list.

Please HBO, be merciful and put this show out of it's misery!!! This is too much for anyone to endure. I can't remember watching a more boring show. Who writes crap like this. Why would Lisa Kudrow do a show like this? Is she that desperate to revive her career?
