Overtime with Henry Aaron and Willie Mays: 7/16/08

After the last Costas Now, HBO presented an exclusive live Overtime segment on HBO.com, featuring Henry Aaron and Willie Mays. It was such a great exchange that HBO decided to make it its own segment.

I'm a 60 year old baseball fan that attended almost every World Series game at Yankee stadium from 1956-1964.

I saw Hank Aaron #44 play Center Field (not Right Field) in the 1957 World Series (Andy Pafko #48 was in Right Field). Our box seat was 3rd row in right field stands.

After the NY Giants left for SF, I had to wait till April 1962 to see Aaron play again. It was a weekday double header Milwaulkee Braves vs the NY Mets. After the game, I waited for Aaron to come out of the locker room to get his autograph. There were dozens of kids there waiting for him to appear. Those kids (including me) lined up to get his autograph.

His 1st wife was there yelling at him, "Comeone Aaron, we need to get out of here." Aaron replied, "I'll be with you as soon as I sign all the autographs." He proceeded to do just that until all the kids had their autographs. He could have left with his wife right away, but he felt he had an obligation to the fans- even though we were teenagers.

I have NEVER seen a more gracious, appreciative, and considerate superstar than Hank Aaron- in any sport!

I tip my cap to Bob Costas and enjoyed the show very much. I kept thinking it would have been nice to have completed this National League outfield with the late Roberto Clemente. I remember early 60's all-star games with the 3 of them. Aaron would shift to left, Mays in center and Clemente in right field. I wonder what they would be paid today?

I feel in love with the forum last time it aired with array of guests discussing multiple topics. I couldn't keep my eyes off of it.

Then last night same thing, forgot about everything else wanted to go to sleep early cause of lovely All-Star game late nighter but just could not! Love the fact as it was LIVE they did 2nd portion on the internet immediatelly after the show.

Bob Costas is a craftsman with his words the way he keeps us (audience) engaged and talks in such a a deep level insight about american sports.

HBO & Costas team has hit a HOME RUN with this show. Very very impressed. Would love to go to one of the live taping one of these day; keep it up!

Bob, Your town hall forum was at most, to say the least, quite interesting. Although, the topics from steriods to HOF standards were entertaining, I personally think that your brief talk with Mays and Aaron was a disaster. You barely introduced them and they were off. No discussions about anything save to celebrate their legacies. All I was left with was a feeling of wanting. Crossing eras and comparing stats are a mistake, as is the status we give to them but that's a show in itself. I would have much preferred that atleast and hour be given to Aaron and Mays who are legendary names but unless your're over 60 know nothing about them.

COSTAS you are the MAN....You put all things where they belong....The show tonight was awesome I really like Wille and Henry.. Pete is my all time fav and he has gotten a raw deal..Only time will help that problem...I only hope that one day BASEBALL will return to its purest form and that you will be there when it does...

I WAS ESPECIALLY HAPPY TO SEE BOB GIBSON, BECAUSE HE IS MY FAVORITE BASEBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIMES. I HAVE BEEN FOLLWING BASEBALL SINCE 1936. ANOTHER PLAYER WHOM I FEEL NEVER RECEIVED HIS ACCLAIMATION WAS BOBBY BONDS.

LOVED THE SHOW

Wow.

Wait a second here. What exactly are you saying? That you want reparations made to current athletes based on their race?

Have you even thought that through? Are you looking for Black or Latino players contracts to exceed other players' merely on the basis of the color of their skin?

I'm a little unclear of what exactly you're proposing. Because it stinks of Equal Protection Violations.

Would the great players of the past like Mayes and Aaron, having undergone atrocious wrongs in the past, based on their race, be in favor of special consideration for todays players based on their race?

It was great, what baseball should be. No fake contracts or whiners. Players who played the game for the game.
