Willie Mays and Hank Aaron will be on the next show

Anyone excited about seeing what these two legends have to say? I definitely enjoy hearing what players from different eras went through, what they think about the sport today, and everything else.

I watched all of the ChiSox series' when they won the Series, then again that was only 4 games during the WS. Grew up there and was glad to see that "next year" had finally come to one team. I have a feeling we'll be waiting a little longer for the Cubs.

The money really does hold contention with some former fans I know. Too much money, as you say, to buy players.

I remember when Mike Schmidt getting $2 million was a big deal. Those days are long gone.

I lost interest when teams started buying championships. Some payrolls 6 times that of others. Once they yankees and red sox broke the 100 million dollar mark, not really fair.

I know, there are exceptions alot of the time but the pay vs performance got too irritating and the roids just topped it off. That and the players union refusing for a long time to submit to testing.

I think the last series I watched every game was the Diamond Backs and Yankees.

nhelm21, that was an excellent point where you connected the Maris and Aaron situations together. I think race did play a role with Aaron but as you said Maris' situation didn't deal with race and he still got a lot of criticism, hate mail etc.. I never would have thought to connect both but they're very closely linked. It's kind of strange how these instances both are connected to Babe Ruth.

As a kid my favorite players were Aaron, Clemente, and Yaz. I followed every at bat for Yaz in 67 when he won the triple crown and I was watching the night Aaron broke Ruth's record. It was a great thrill for me and I never understood why people didn't want him to break it. Apparently, Bob Costas is confused on this point as well. He has to drag race into this but if that was Maris sitting there, what would he blame. Maris had the identical problem and obviously race played no part. Actually, Maris had the commissioner against him! I don't want to diminish what Aaron went through breaking the color barrier (and Mays, Clemente and all the rest) but obviously there was more to this than race. It seems for someone who is supposed to be a great interviewer, Costas took the easy way out and avoided looking for the real issue choosing rather to pander those who want to blame any problem on racial bias.

I think the blame needs to go around, I also think we live in a society that tends to point fingers at everyone else but themselves, most people refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. What's done is done, mistakes were made and it's a shame but what can you do? I think many things have been overdone. Hopefully the younger generations coming into sports can do it the right way and make people feel good about the sport again.

I think it's a mixture of both. Jose Canseco didn't help matters with his naming and shaming book. He says now, apparently, he feels bad for doing it. I'm not sure I believe him.

Yes, the media overcovers this issue, but there are also kids out there who idolize the Maguire's and Canseco's of the world and I believe it needs to be made clear that these substances are not good.

Baseball players have done it too. I was a baseball fan until the last strike. I still follow to a very limited degree, watch on occasion but I'm not avid as I once was. These people are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and can't invest their own money? I didn't feel too sorry for them and hoped the strike would have gone on so the minor leaguers could have been brought up and those overpaid players would have realized they were replaceable. Maybe baseball would have gotten back to what it was once. We pay them to entertain us.

WOW!

I've had the show on Tivo for a while and just watched what I could of it. I don't know how good the show might have been since I couldn't get past the first segment. The negativity towards the game was too much to handle. Somewhere the line was crossed, ask any true fan of the game, it is the media ruining baseball, not steriods.

My grandmother ignited my passion for baseball at a young age. Not just the twins where we spent many nights listening to the games on the radio, but all players and teams. Although I have been an avid cardinal fan for the past dozen years, i've also had Astros, white sox and rangers season tickets along the way.

I follow all teams on a daily basis, feeling like I know a lot about what is going on in the game. I do however draw the line at making unconfirmed judgement and ruining people's lives. Somewhere along the way the media and baseball management has assumed the role of judge, jury and in some cases god. While some media thinks they are making some great impact or looking for their 15 minutes, they are not considering who is being affected by their unsubstantiated statements. Not only the athletes and their family, maybe justifing this, being in the public eye they expect to be treated without respect of the law and convicted only by public opinion, but let's consider the future of the game should it survive the media's persecution.

Some of the best ever to play the game are being kept from contributing to the growth of the future players. That is the real tradegy of the situation the media is causing. Baseball didn't have rules, didn't inforce what they did have, is continuing to fuel the media by not taking responsibility for their own failures.

My question to Bob and the media, why is this just about the hall of fame? Why stop there? Since you have no proof and just making personal judgement, why not line up all the mvp's, gold gloves, silver sluggers and even world championships and let the media decided who should keep the awards. Maybe you could take away all the awards you felt weren't earned just like the Olympics. Oh right, no proof so not like the olympics.

Bob you specifically made a statement about Mark McGwire. Something like "if he were only doing andro, he would have said so". I think "thank God" he said nothing. Had he said anything you would have believed him, right? Clearly that has not worked out for Roger Clemens. He instead has had to spend unthinkable amounts of money on attorneys and resorted to the courts to try to clear his name. Had and continues to have his personal life on display for anyone to take advantage of. Not to mention he has been shunned by an organization he took to the world series, sold millions of tickets and signed to spend the first 10 years of his retirement working with the future of the club. Unlike others, both are able to quietly work with the younger players, but a lot of the future is missing out on their knowledge and skills.

We seem to have forgotten the game for the drama. The world series starts tonight with a team of young future stars and a team of veterans. No matter who wins the future of the game and players continue to be questioned. It's time to focus on the game, the good stories like the Josh Hamiltons and leave the undocumented steriod era to the history books.

Let's just play ball. Leave the drama for the novels.

Hi Susan,
I've seen Willie on tv a few times, mostly near his Godson Barry Bonds. Willie is always smiling and has a great sense of humor. It should be entertaining. I've never seen Hank and Willie together so I'm wondering how that'll be. These guys seem larger than life to me, I just don't look at the athletes today in the same way.

I'll be watching, Steve. These are two guys that did it without enhancements. Hank always gives an interesting interview, too. I don't know that I've ever seen Willie interviewed.
