Episode 58: The N Word

Larry tries to do Auntie Rae a favor, but ends up offending her instead. Meanwhile, Jeff's stay at the hospital to get a "snore job" opens up a new opportunity for Larry, who takes full advantage of it.

Discuss the show!

About Cheryl getting together with Ted Danson. I could definately see that happening. Larry was suspicious of her and Ted becoming too close earlier in the season. I do also remember Ted conning his wife, Mary, into answering the door when Suzie came over, which seemed to irk Mary. Also I remember in the second episode ever that Larry and Mary went shopping together so I could see those factors possibly coming into play eventually. I guess we'll see.

blindmoe, I agree to an extent; but has Larry David not offended, to at least the same degree, women, handicapped, the elderly, the obese? Jews? Without offering, as you suggested, a positive counterpoint in the form of a Wanda Sykes? Larry David trades in stereotypes and racial discomfort, and I think it works on much the same level as Sascha Baron Cohen - both, in the end, are the biggest idiots in the group.

Isn't anyone upset that Larry and Cheryl broke up. I miss cheryl. To me she made Larry's entire character believable. Is she coming back. For some reason I need a happy ending or resolution on this. I think I will hate Chery's character if she doesn't rejoin with Larry.

First, let me say that I am a big Larry David and CYE fan, have been from the 1st episode. But is it me or is the show getting progressively more insulting towards blacks. I'm not talking about the use of the "N" word. I talking abput the depiction of the black characters' over the top reaction to merely hearing the word. Would a black doctor or pharmacist really freak out to that extent? And what is such a depiction really saying about black professionals? I know its just a comedy and not meant to be a documentary, but this season, beginning with the shucking and jiving Black family moving in (I mean really, how negatively sterotypical could those characters be - why don't they just collect some welfare and smoke some crack) there doesn't seem to be ANY positive depictions of blacks. Wanda Sykes was a positive intelligent character but she's no where to be seen this season. Not to over emphasize the point but consider Larry, the landowner, clearing some land so that "Mammy"/Auntie Rae could plant some lettuce. I'm not really into polical correctness but just wondering if anyone else is noticing this as a trend on the show.

Second-best episode of a wonderful season (I'm still holding out for something to top Leon's mind-bending "get in that ass" advice).

Speaking of, with only two episodes left (has this season really flown by that quickly?), can we get MORE Leon? I'm hearing rumors that Larry David actually wants to do another season, though he had said this was the last. Has it been confirmed/denied?

:^O EASILY one of my favorite Curb episodes. Brilliant!!

I have to disagree with the idea that Cheryl is off CYE for good. I have an inkling that she and ted danson may be getting it on soon?

Did anyone else notice that in the "anonymous donor" episode when Suzie rings the Danson's doorbell, the normally happy couple had Ted's wife slam down the newspaper in frustration..hinting at problems in their marriage? And the reason for the quabble was never explained?

And Ted and Cheryl had been becoming increasingly flirty, ever since the telephone call in the beginning of the episode..on the phone..

also, in earlier seasons she had been quoted as saying sacastically "yeah, it must be hell being married to ted danson".

Also her voice drop when she tells Larry Ted is 'anonymous' just SCREAMS romance!

Just a thought, might be way off, but they are super flirty, not just this season.

On a side note, I LOVE the show but Loretta constantly saying L.D. and repeating everyline is annoying!

Even more interesting than Sue Ellen Mitshke.

Brenda Strong (Dr. Flomm) is the voice of Mary Alice Young, the narrator on Desperate Housewives.

Here is an article i found online from the Star Ledger:
Brief "Curb Your Enthusiasm" spoilers coming up just as soon as I get a prescription filled...

Soooo close to being a classic "Curb" episode. All the ingredients were there, save the biggest one: the ending. I liked almost everything else -- dating a doctor as parallel to seeing a doctor, Jeff's dismay at turning bald (Jeff Garlin is almost as good as Susie Essman at playing comic rage, but it's often funnier because he's called on to do it so rarely), Larry getting into trouble for using the N-word (and, especially, Larry being branded a bigot by the pharmacist because of the doctor's hilariously-phrased note) -- but then we came to the final minutes and it was clear Larry didn't come up with a good way to end it.

After all, after getting into trouble twice for repeating verbatim what the guy in the men's room said, shouldn't Larry have figured out by now that he can tell the story without using the word? Plus, Jeff and Susie know the story now; when Larry froze up, why didn't one of them finish it?

Still, 95% of a really funny episode, and seeing Brenda Strong with Larry David reminded me of the old story about how, when he cast her to play braless wonder Sue Ellen Mischke, she noted that she was nursing and, therefore, could make her breasts whatever size Larry wanted.

What did everybody else think?

First off, hey Rob, is there anything you LIKE about Curb. Mr recycle. If you dont like the show, and think it is recycled so much, then here is an idea, DONT WATCH IT, or keep posted your same Recycled review on it. Which am sure, alot of posters will agree with me on. FYI Rob, Larry said he wants to do a Season 7 so, no, Curb is not over... SORRY!!

I thought that this episode was just hilarious. the whole bald thing, Auntie Ray, the N Word, Pharmacist, and especially the END. I watched it 3x last night, and got funnier everytime. It was defiantly different without Cheryl in the show, besides the montage, you can tell that Larry was missing Cheryl. I wonder what is going to happen to the blacks, with only 2 weeks left. Should be a great final 2....... Looking forward to them. This is how i would rate the first 8. (hey that rhymed)
1. The N Word
2. The Anonymous Donor
3. Meet The Blacks
4. The Ida Funkhouser Roadside Memorial
5. The Rat Dog
6. The Tivo Guy
7. The Lefty Call/The Bathroom Monitor
8. The Freak Book

so tired of the brothers and sisters around i know you must feel the same way about the blacks.

hopefully no 300 lb niggers were offended by this show"

Thanks for making it abundantly clear that we're dealing with a complete idiot. Your statements are more of a personal statement about yourself than anything else. CYE doesn't want fans like you so spend your Sunday nights at clan rallies rather than watching episodes of CYE, jerk!
