I think all of the Curb episodes have a certain element of Larry's twisted, creative, comedic genius mind and the levels can vary. Rather than sit and compare one episode to the other, I just sit and enjoy them and cherish each one as I continue to add to my collection.

An Evening with Curb Your Enthusiasm was on Wed night and it was put on by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences(http://emmys.org/events/2005/curb.php). I guess it went on for little over an hour and everybody was there. The next day the site said it would be up shortly for reviewing but it doesn't say that any more. I hope they do put it up to view. Being on the east coast I had to stay up to 12:30am to watch and would like to rewatch it with a coherent mind. It was worth losing the sleep though.

I have to agree with Yummerz on the Cheryl issue. I think she is great in the role she is in. Larry even made a comment the other night that she never dissapoints him (in thier scenes together). He was referring to the scene in "The Terrorist Attack" where they were talking about him leaving and her staying. He has said on different occasions this is one of his favorite scenes becuase it was totally unplanned and they just riffed off of each other. I think she is very natural in the role and the show just would not be the same without her.

Oh my God! The Cheryl character doesn't fit? That is the point! She is what would be considered "the straight man" in a comic ensemble....and it is brilliant! I think she is terrific, and the whole thing about her being a bad actress, just means she is doing her job.....I think she is supposed to come off exactly as she does, and is definitely one of my favorite characters....she makes me laugh HARD!!! Some "gorgeous bimbo" laughing and giggling at everything Larry did or said, would just be really stupid. Ms. Hines nails the part, and most certainly has a fan in me!

I to saw the Steve Martin show last night not knowing that Larry was going to be on the show, as I have always been a big fan of Steve Martin. I thought Larry was definitely the best(as in funny) out of all the presenters. He had the crowd as well as Steve laughing.

Also I did get to watch the Live Web Cast of An Evening With Curb Your Enthusiasm last night and when pressured for an answer on if the show will go on, Larry would not answer although the rest of the cast was definitely game for another season. It was a great chat with the cast. It was interesting to hear their takes on what is going on especially Larry's. It is so clear that the whole crew admires Larry and what they do.

In regards to the current season, although I do not find it roll on the ground funny all the time, I have been enjoying the story lines and find that I do not always have to laugh out loud to enjoy it. I just take it for what it is and that is entertainment, to me at least. When I do not find it entertaiment anymore, I will turn it off.

I don't think Larry has lost his comic chops. If you watched the Mark Twain Award ceremony on PBS honoring Steve Martin, Larry was one of the people talking about Steve on the Kennedy Center stage. He was so funny. He basically had a whole routine about how much of a jerk Steve Martin was that was great. Humor is very hit or miss with anyone no matter how great the comedian. I am still optimistic that we'll see some great Curbs this year but as many people have noted, it's hard to keep something fresh after 5 seasons. I love Extras too and know that Ricky takes great pains not to stay with one project too long. Larry himself has said he loves it when he's done with something so maybe we'll see a resurgence of Larry in another great project after this year. If not, let's hope he can do his best to keep Curb fresh.

Humor is subjective and when have ratings ever been an indication of quality? For a "fanatic", I post a lot less often on this board than you do... And I actually like the show! When I soured on the show during season 4, instead of complaining about the show all the time to other people who seemed to be enjoying it, I decided to... wait for it... stop posting! Novel idea, eh? Criticism is fine and I always view the show with a critical eye, but if you dislike the show this much, don't you have something better to do with your day? Maybe not.

Facts don't bother fanatics.

I finally saw a post about Cheryl Hines' character that really hit home for me. On another site, a poeter observed that the Cheryl character just doesn't fit in. The poster analogized the CYE Cheryl to Marilyn on The Munsters, just not as good looking. I think this is the perfect analogy. The character just doesn't fit.

Of course, I still think Ms. Hines is a simply terrible actress and this exacerbates the trouble I have with the character.

Who cares about the ratings? Most people in the US think Friends was a great comedy. The show has been in a slow decline post season 2, but this season has been much funnier than season 4, which was the real clunker in my view. "Lewis Needs a Kidney" alone was one of the best CYE episodes ever, was it not? Which means it was funnier than practically any new show you'll see today that the masses undoubtebly prefer to CYE. I thought the "Smoking Jacket" was a bit average as far as episodes go but still quite funny. Fine HBO, cancel CYE if ratings are all that matter to you. Five seasons is a good run and more than most great British comedies put out anyway.

Enthusiasm Curbed for "Curb"

by Joal Ryan
Nov 8, 2005, 6:45 PM PT

Larry David left Seinfeld after six years. Five years into David's Curb Your Enthusiasm, it's viewers who are walking.

Sunday's latest look at Hollywood mis-manners was watched by 1.2 million HBO subscribers, per Nielsen Media Research, up a notch from the previous week's season low of 1.1 million.

a d v e r t i s e m e n t

Minus its Sex and the City lead in, which Curb enjoyed as recently as 2004, the show has struggled to put up numbers substantially bigger than that of Lisa Kudrow's The Comeback. Make that, Lisa Kudrow's recently canceled The Comeback.

HBO did not return a call Tuesday on the future of Curb Your Enthusiasm, now in its fifth season. The network has already renewed Rome, which brings in more viewers than Curb, and Extras, which doesn't. To date, it has been David, Curb's creative force and lead malcontent, who has made the call as to whether or not the show returns.

Even in its healthiest days, Curb was the weakest ratings link in a powerhouse lineup that included Sex and the City and The Sopranos. Now, it's more a symptom, than a leading cause, of HBO's overall sagging Sunday fortunes. Last month, Daily Variety reported that the pay cable network's viewership levels were down 58 percent on that night from 2004.

The devoted cult of Curb, meanwhile, seems less concerned with ratings, and more concerned with the show's creative direction. Consensus carping has it that something is not quite right in Larry David's neighborhood.

"Has anyone else been noticing how lousy the new episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm are?" Adam Buckman asked in the New York Post on Oct. 10.

Last week, Variety's Brian Lowry noted the show "has lurched out of the starting gate, sinking to its nadir with an episode in which the son of a Japanese kamikaze pilot (he survived; get it?) attempts suicide in response to Larry's insensitivity."

Even on the sports zone of CNNSI.com, columnist Pete McEntegart wondered aloud Tuesday if "Larry David is running out of ideas" and cited a few instances of old Seinfeld gags being recycled on the green-friendly Curb. (David cocreated Seinfeld.)

On JumptheShark.com, the definitive site on the subject of when and how TV shows stop being good, the majority opinion is that Curb actually jumped the shark during season four when David was cast in The Producers. Emmy voters didn't agree with that assessment. They nominated the show that year for eight awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

For now, Larry David is undeterred by the bad buzz--or, at least the TV version of Larry David is. Come Sunday, he'll lace up his sneakers, and head off to Seder. With a sex offender in tow.

I seriously almost killed myself laughing when Larry said "Who is...?". To me, the episode was complete at that point.
