I have actually had some friends visit South Dakota and saw some bears.. But I am not sure if it was the Black Hills or not. I tried googling it just now cuz I can, and basically could only find that there have been numerous sightings in the Black Hills over the years, but none verified. I dunno, it is not like somebody is saying that Bigfoot is out there or anything. I find it credible, especially given the time frame.

Anniday.... The main point I was trying to get across is that you don't need to embellish your story by adding a falsity to it. After having lived here all of my life and then running into people from all over the U.S. and the globe I run into a common theme; they all have no idea what South Dakota is like. Heck, some of them believe there are indians still living on the prarie in teepees and that the people here still live something similar to way the "Deadwood" series portrays. (The "Deadwood" series is wonderful by the way!) Saying that you were chased from a mine shaft by a bear in your story simply takes away from what might otherwise have been an interesting post.

Deadwood is fun, South Dakota still has wild unsettled places (unfortunately there are no bears), the scenery is breath taking, but we are civilized. We have malls, cable tv, the movies come out here the same time they come out in the big cities, theater, art galleries, and every outdoor activity you can think of. We have everything here that anyone can find most anywhere else. I get defensive when someone tries to distort my home state into something that it isn't.

I glad to see someone agrees on no bears in the Black Hills. I was wondering how long it has been since there were bears there and you have answered that for me. You are real lucky living where you are. I live about 110 miles from there in Gillette.

I bet the people in the building were laughing and running the other way at the same time. It would be funny if it were a small bear with no anger problems. No big ones please. LOL

Regarding black bears:

Those guys are liable to turn up all sorts of weird places. Like New Jersey and various other suburban areas where they're not supposed to be. In a similar vein, a few years ago, a coyote found its way to downtown Seattle, and even boarded an elevator (apparently he couldn't remember what floor he wanted, because he got stuck and captured there).

Mfdakota;

EXCUSE ME!!!!!!!!!!! Why so touchy? I was not trying to deceive ANYONE about ANYTHING. I have no reason to lie. I am not trying to discredit anyone. I've done nothing to be ashamed. I was just relaying an incident that happened to me & a couple of friends in the summer of 1974; while we were hiking in the area.

I hardly think that my post will hurt tourism in S.D. The Black Hills and S.D. in general have beautiful country to visit whether camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, or just riding through on your Harley. No air smells as clean as the scent of pine in the air. The national park is breathtaking in the fall. There were still elk wandering the roads then and donkeys would come up to the car to be fed. I thought that was so cool. I remember the people being friendly. But, I'm sure things have changed alot since I've been there.

The Season One DVD set disk 6 addresses the language. Other Deadwood history sites also address it. The Victorian language is probably quite realistic from those who moved from the big cities of the East...New York, Philadelphia, Boston. For the pioneer families, not so much. The vulgar language has been fired up for this show. In 1876, "damn" and "hell" were probably considered foul language, but would be laughable to us now.

You're joking, right? Every one of George Carlin's 7 dirty words has been used.

They certainly use ass, son of a bitch, cunt and prick frequently. The episode where "Nigger General" was going to be tarred, the word "motherfucker" was used. That's the only episode I heard that used.
