Politics in DEADWOOD -Bring It !

Seems folks here in Deadwood have alot to offer on the subject of politics. It's all over the place in so many threads its hard for a hoople like me to find it all.

So i thought maybe if there was a single thread for political opinion and debate it might be easier to indulge in reading it.

I hope so anyways cause some of the stuff I've read in here has all the promise of a good Sunday morning pundit throw down. But a lot fuckin wittier and funnier.

Thanks.

?There's been a lot of talk about how big the bill is. Here's what it's all about. This is what Members of Congress get. This is the guidebook with affordable health care plans, many choices, deep discounts because we pool people together, minimum standards for each plan. This is what Members of Congress get. But they don't want you, the American people to get it. This is what it's about. They say they want to protect Medicare but it was them who wanted to eliminate it. They say they want to pass Social Security, they wanted to privatize it. I say to my colleagues who pay the bills? The bill fairy? Who pays the bills are you the taxpayer. They say they want you to pay those too. When you're looking at how big the bills are, remember this document. Eight million workers who work for the federal government get this document in the mail. They get good health care. We want it for you. They're going to get Medicare at 65. They don't say we don't want Medicare because we don't believe in single payer. They want it because they want to take and take and take. But they don't want it for you. The democrats want this for you and the Republican Party just wants it for themselves. I yield back the balance of my time.?

~ Rep. Anthony Weiner. (D-NY)

I became a fan of Sheldon Whitehouse during the Bush Administration and of Congressman Weiner during the fight to reform health care in a way which benefits average Americans and not merely the Five Families of Organized Health Insurance.

Weiner was on "Morning Joe." I already respected the Congressman, but being on MSNBC in the morning obviously speaks to his dedication. I wouldn't last ten seconds on that fucking awful show before asking Miki if there is anything she won't do to be on television, and then punching Joe in the face. I know this is wrong and I am ashamed.

Telling this to Republicans amounts to attacking one of their most sacred myths, and could easily make their heads explode. I mention this only because I'm sure you wouldn't want to hurt their feelings.

Also, I suppose politics amounts to the practical wisdom required in striking the right balance between personal liberty and corporate good, and in asking each of us how much individual control we're willing to relinquish over our own lives in order to live in community. I want to live in a society which recognizes that people are free to say what they want, but which still has laws against libel, slander, and yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. This all leads me to ask, has Sarah Palin crossed the line yet and called for open revolt and revolution? Is Bachmann going to beat her to it? When does making fun of the GOP amount to laughing at the mentally ill?

I'm going to ponder these things today.

I've now watched Edward Norton's Obama documentary twice, catching it yesterday for the second time. If this film is available for sale in time, I know what I'm getting people for Christmas.

I enjoy watching the smart, capable, dedicated, nice, hip, young people in the film, many of whom were low level campaign staffers. I really like Plouffe, Axelrod, and Gibbs. And then there's Lorenzo Rivera who, though only nine at the time, shows us how to behave like grownups.

There are lots of poignant moments in the film: James Clyburn showing up to vote before dawn only to find long lines; the African American hotel staff applauding as Plouffe and Axelrod leave their hotel to go see the President Elect; the speech Obama gave following the death of his Grandmother. I even like the way the film ends with the door closing on us and the screen going black. I felt like Mrs. Michael Corleone.

That is all.

She still catches recognizable glimpses every now and then, though, when they hold the gun show at the County Fairgrounds.

Oy! As for "My Vagina Fell Out," I now remember that in fact a girl I knew in high school had a sagging uterus, and she did have it tucked back in at age 17. Did in fact have a child later.

Well before the Wall came down or Reagan's speech, Frank Zappa (a cultural God in Eastern Europe) was asked by the Soviets, "what can we do to improve our image and get foreign investment?".

Zappa replied, "tear down that wall". An obscure interview of Zappa on the Johnny Carson show explains this. You can Google the video. In East Europe, there are many statues of Frank Zappa...none of Reagan. They know Reagan made his speech when the planning of dismantling the Wall had already begun. Reagan used his actor's timing to jump on the stage to steal credit.

As Gorbachev was reforming the USSR, Reagan was so behind the times with "evil empire" talk, the Europeans dragged Reagan to the Soviet border and let Reagan walk across the border to prove Soviet intention. Reagan's misguided conservative handlers caused the hardline communists to conspire a coup and hold Gorbachev hostage...until Yeltsin squashed the revolt and banned the communists from government.

Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Pope John Paul, Polish Solidarity, Frank Zappa, and the Truman Doctrine of standing up to the communists in Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan ended the Cold War.

No amount of revising history by conservatives will change the facts. Reagan had almost nothing to do with ending the Cold War...if anything, Reagan extended it another 5 years and almost caused the hardline Communists to regain control.

"We've got to hold on to hope, and we've got to fight hard because Congressional action tonight just put America on a path toward an unrecognizable country."
-- Sarah Palin, on her Facebook page.

Man, this is awful. She can recognize Russia from her back porch but can't see the U.S. from inside it?

Say, maybe if she moved to Russia she could see better! I'd miss her, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made.
