Politics in DEADWOOD -Bring It !

Seems folks here in Deadwood have alot to offer on the subject of politics. It's all over the place in so many threads its hard for a hoople like me to find it all.

So i thought maybe if there was a single thread for political opinion and debate it might be easier to indulge in reading it.

I hope so anyways cause some of the stuff I've read in here has all the promise of a good Sunday morning pundit throw down. But a lot fuckin wittier and funnier.

Thanks.

I've heard of them but never bothered to find out where they are. That photo looks like those beer commercials that I love. What a great beach !! This is why I don't "get" cruises. ( I have never been on one) Instead of all that noise & all those people & running on & off the ship, why not fly to a place like this, check into the hotel & just chill on the beach for a week with no one bugging you to join karaoke night or the fantastic costume contest or shit like that ???

An aquaintance of mine who is in the Army reserves was recently sent to Somalia, possibly for a year. I had no fucking idea we had troops in Somalia. I heard we are building a base there.

The caravan does keep moving along....doesn't it?

One Moment in Annihilation's Waste, / One Moment, of the Well of Life to taste - / The Stars are setting and the Caravan / Starts for the Dawn of Nothing - Oh, make haste!?

Perhaps when they write the Book of Oil a hundred or two years hence the period in which the world raged and engaged for that precious devils diarrhea will be remembered as a brief moment of madness that made, and unmade, nations, empires, and kings...

What will be the US be then? Only the caravan will know...but maybe the 20th Century, say the Great War to the End Games for a dwindling vital asset unfolding around the old orb presently, will be viewed as a violent murderous mad era...

But I think not....the world will be just as violent and mad then. but maybe oil will be dead...and we will be murdering over some mean mars rock that runs things and makes money.

Most folks don't recall the ghosts of the Great War anymore...but I'd wager in a few hundred years no one will care what happens in vast swaths of the desolate and drained middle east.

Maybe Moorish Spain or the Religious Civil Wars for an Islamic Italy will be an issue then...surely throats will still be being slit for sky gods even when the devils diarrhea goes down the drain...but it will take a ton of blood to tie the 20th century. But I'm confident, if we put our minds to it, we can do it...

Ah fuck out as long as we have the biggest space ray guns and the space riding were bears on our side we'll be all right...unless we splinter or give some insane Admiral or General the keys to the highway.

Still

Catch the Caravan

Maybe someone in the caravan will sing to the stardust...

I don't see your screeds as anti-US but anti-US policy...I'm close to your age...Vietnam is still painful for me...

Yes, I ain't in the streets either and do enjoy my comfort zone, which is fairly risk-laden as it is, albeit in different ways.

The thing is, real change is glacially slow personally and politically and unfortunately sometimes is doesn't happen fast enough for wellbeing. I find your perspective pretty sound...but my hope does outweigh my cynicism about 60/40.

I still think that Obama is prolly the best shot we have for the things we want...and at my age, I've accepted and even on some days embraced the reality that there is no finish line.

Everybody has an agenda,Solong...it's just that whatever a candidate intends, the responsibilites of office tend toward maintaining the Status Quo...I didn't expect the president to say,"The troops come home tomorrow...War is Over."...but neither did I expect him to elevate the opinion of a proven liar like McChrystal to the point that supporting the McChrystal Plan becomes the Be All/End All of discussion...and sending 30,000 or 34,000 instead of the 40,000 that the SOB asked for isn't meaningful 'cause Generals always ask for more than they want, knowing that the Executive will give less to show their "independence"...somewhere down the line Rapid said,"Fucked if you do,Fucked if you don't"...true...and because of that someone has to cut the Gordian Knot...I think that whatever Obama does,it comes not from worrying about 2010 or 2012 elections or any other relatively crass political calculation...he was handed a monumental ClusterFuck and just because of that, tinkering around the edges won't work...

Oh geez. Well I'll only say that Obama was not handed a shit sandwich, he was handed a shit banquet. With fundamental change comes deep pain and this country is already whithering on the floor. I suspect that after Health Care is signed, he still will have enough political capital to do few things until he has to gear up for another run. Might even look a little like the idealistic model that some attribute to him. But the truth is that Afghanistan will not end well no matter what he does. Sure, he will get some short term impact from more troops, but for what? At what price? What's the end game? On the other hand, if NATO leaves there will be huge trouble in that area for decades which will probably reach well into Europe and maybe as far away as here. Unfortunately, there is no in between those two notions. What he says on Tuesday will be very important, but no matter what he says no one will agree with him and they will analyze and most often criticize his character until at least Christmas.

Straw, I think the office changes every man. But, I don't think Obama will quit on any of his promises or goals. Think of what he inherited. He did save us from a depression, IMO. That's huge. The wars are incredibly complex. I never imagined that he would call all the troops home at once. I did think he would begin scaling back in Iraq and bolstering the troops in Afghanistan. The job is really too big for any man or woman, I think. The President has to consider an enormous amount of information on a daily basis and then listen to people who have more facts about what's going on. The trick is figuring out who has an agenda and who is telling it like it is.
