To answer your questions, there is originally 4 tennants or "pillars" of hip hop:

MCing

Breakdancing

Tagging

DJing

This is not to say that anybody that either one of these is automatically "Hip Hop", like if you breakdance, that doesn't mean you are hip hop, but if you are a B-Girl or B-Boy, then that's different...

Please stop saying Jumped the Shark, seriously. I actually thought the celebrity exception was pretty funny - I know plenty of friends that joked about that before it was ever on Friends. And the Vanilla Ice/Suge Knight reference was hilarious. "You watched Viking Quest?!" Classic Drama.

BrokesDaddy,

Wow. That about sums it up. I think you have said every ignorant statement about an art form that you can say. You simply don't understand it so you attempt to destroy it. I don't understand it much either as I am in to classic jazz, blues, rock and maybe some branches from there. But some of the hip-hop/rap genre I have heard is amazing. Nelly's melodic style is brilliant. That guy does more with melody than I have heard in a long time. I have heard some other artists who I don't even know the names of who have impressed me. I'm too busy to know what some of the younger (and hipper) people on this board know, but to say a whole genre of music is just crap makes you sound like a stodgy old man yelling at Elvis on the TV, wanting Ed Sullivan to bring back Bing Crosby. Logic will tell us that you don't bother to listen to a wide variety of the music and yet you know everything it has to offer. Amazing. I don't know what you listen to or appreciate but I'm sure I could make a case for it being absolute crap compared to some of the great jazz artists. But I don't do that because art is an expression of people and should be respected. Hip Hop can have a caustic style but it is an expression of people who have faced hardship. What are they supposed to do? Rap about a lifestyle they DON'T know? If it's so easy then why don't you do it and make millions? Because you wouldn't have the slightest idea where to begin, that's why.

It hasn't been successful because maybe there wasn't enough talent to begin with. The best producers and song writers can't make something out of nothing, at least not for more than one album.

In my opinion, he's got just enough talent and looks to make it but very talented is a stretch. And to speak out about someone else's talent is hilarious. He recently made a comment about Kanye West by saying "Has he ever had a song that wasn't already a song before he did it?"

Hey, we give people in others (politics?) all the credit in the world for surrounding themselves with the right people. There are plenty of others who have tried to spend big bucks to have others produce for them and it hasn't turned out with half as much success. At least with him, not only did he choose good people, but it turned out good as well. I think he is a decent enough singer/dancer/writer to keep me entertained and most imporantly he picks the right producers.

I don't think he's very talented...the people behind him are. At best he may have co-written or co-produced his music.

JT... another VERY talented white boy doing 'urban' sounds...

I LOVE this quote from your link: "I wanted (the album) to look to a time when everything was really sexy," he says. "Maybe everybody was coked up, but who cares? It was hot. It was all about sex."

hahahaha

the 1% of respect I was trying to save in my perception of you has now just been tossed out the window...

...Em is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Will Smith musically/lyrically/etc. ....seriously, I can't believe you even just said that. People have their own preferences and that is fine. MANY people have hated Em for a while now, especially when taking his words literally and that's fine. Those same people could say they prefer just about ANYONE over him, but not because they actually like the alternative in question. Like, someone could say I would spend my money on Los Del Rio before Eminem anyday, which would be a dig on Em and an indication that they'd NEVER buy his work... but to suggest that not only is Em bad but Will is good???

Yeah neither one of them can't break dance so that puts them out for me :^O

I don't care, I like either one, and both at the same time....I like Nas better than both of them anyway :-D

You have to remember the difference between Will and Eminem is that Will is a good father that knows his kids are going to be sponging off of him and the way he puts himself out there. And Eminem doesnt care that his kids will sponge off of him and emulate what he puts out there. Nice to know we have some good parents out there.......
