Ricky Gervais stars as Andy Millman, an ambitious if somewhat nondescript Englishman, who gives up his day job to pursue fame in the movies, only to find he just can't land the big parts.

Re: About the Show (Thoughts By a Real Extra AND Actor)

As an actor, myself, who has worked a lot as an extra, I was really looking forward to this show. The poster on DVD 1 (first season poster) was so perfect; the frustrated extra sitting on the folding chair between the two principals sitting smugly on their directors chairs. I couldn't wait to see it! That really exemplifies the petty "caste system" of the world of film and tv sets. A lot of that was captured in the first season. The disrespect from crew about extras was well played out here and there. But I think more could have been done to continue Andy's struggle with comic aspects of that on the second season. I really think they could have extended Andy's struggle as an extra-to-actor before his rise to becoming what seemed nearly an overnight success. Sure it's a comedy show, no one would ever keep a lousy agent like that--especially into Season 2 when he was successful enough to work with a real agency... But for Season 2 there is a lot of inbetween stuff that could have happened. He could have gotten a few jobs as a principal, blew the money, and found himself back in the extra bin again... just as an example. In real life it's not always that black and white. You can work as a extra to supplement your scanty earnings as an actor or your occasional actual principal roles from film and TV gigs -- which don't involve that huge leap to getting your own show; that would be pretty far-fetched to be handed your own show after never getting cast or having any track record as a prior performer. So I really would have enjoyed another season of Andy struggling before his fast track to fame on Season 2. That aside, my only other complaint would have been that the sets needed to have more real extras milling around to show how bustling a real set could be. More moments of snippy wardrobe people and hair and makeup people giving a quick dust of powdering to the extras; "ok, you're fine! off you go"...(that sort of attitude) in comparison to the unbelievable ass-kissing the principals get from make-up artists and wardrobe people; they rush to get coats put on the principals between takes while the extras are left to freeze or fend for themselves... But apart from these minor complaints, I adore Ricky G. and got a huge kick out of all of it... And I definitely had "a laugh"... a lot of them!! I'm also a lifelong David Bowie fan so his episode was a HUGE kick to me!

Does anyone have an address for fan mail and submissions? I was shocked when I saw this show on DVD (from Netflix), as I had missed The Office and Extras totally until then-- and I am a complete double for Ricky Gervais. Which, of course, lost it's luster as the fat jokes rolled in, and David Bowie encouraged me to commit suicide. That being said, I'd love to send a DVD to them, just to show this. Any address out there?

YES! It took me a long time to find it myself. It's a short song (1:01) by Cat Stevens called Tea for the Tillerman. It is available at I-tunes store.

I have a question about something that is driving me crazy. I love the song at the end of the show during the credits. I can't find out anywhere who sings it or what it is? Can anyone help me? Thanks!!!

There is a scene from one of the Season 2 episodes posted on YouTube. It involves David Bowie and is absolutely hilarious. Imagine clinical depression accurately depicted in a comedy scene with David Bowie as demon-in-chief. It's too good. Accents be damned!

2nd Season has just finished in the UK. This is definately even funnier than the first. Andy has his own (terrible) sit com whilst Maggie continues as an Extra. No part of society is untouched by their cringing humour: Gays, Jews, Disabled, Dying...you name it they have a go at it and get away with it. The last episode in Season 2 is about the best crafted piece of comedy Ive seen in a long long time. If you enjoyed season 1....you are going to love season 2!

I was hoping that in light of the present dilema with showing the new season on BBC2 to which Dan Radcliffe will be starring, fans from the U.S., as well as others outside the U.K., will not be able to view the episode next week from thier offical "EXTRAS" website. Will there be releasing season 2 on HBO? -- Edited by DRsupport at 09/21/2006 10:17 AM

Well, I'm from Louisiana, and everything sounds weird to me....but that is the funny part, you can really feel their emotion, it crosses language barriers...after the first episode or two you get used to the language and the humor, and it makes the show awesome. Ricky is by far one of the best comedic actors out there. The scene with Ben stiller, when he got kicked off the set, was hilarious! Also, the first episode with Kate Winslet, was hysterical, even though I couldn't understand everything they were saying, i almost peed in my pants laughing at the phone sex scene when the boyfriend found out. What I'm trying to say is, a funny show is a funny show....no matter what the inflection of the language.

the show is great. i loved the office and ricky is a total genius. HOWEVER: like the office, there are many british cultural references that fly over my head. and worse than that, the accents and muttering jibberish speaking style are often very hard to understand. ashley jensen is a brilliant comic actress for example but that scottish accent is very funny sounding to my ears. modern brit speak seems to have become a patois of sorts. to me it would be better if they all spoke like tony blair instead of like sir alex ferguson.sometimes i have played scenes back over and over and i stll can't understand what was said here or there. -- Edited by njpjm06 at 08/29/2006 6:11 PM
