From acclaimed director John Landis comes an uproarious, heartfelt tribute to one of the most celebrated comedians of the past 50 years, Don Rickles. Discuss the show!

If anyone else in comedy tried to do anything like Rickles' act they'd be all over the press and people would be picketing their events. With that said, I loved this special. I laughed so hard after some of the stories that I had to pause the TIVO so I wouldn't miss anything. It was wild, it was offensive at times, but, as the name of the special implies, there's a lot of heart behind his act. He's not going out to hurt people or offend his audience and that's why he's still around and why people come to his shows.

In these days of just about anything having the potential to be interpreted as offensive, the young members of the apology generation simply don't appreciate Don Rickles. Nor do they understand his humor and his one-of-a-kind ability to insult without offending. The funniest moment ever on TV was when Don was the guest host of The Tonight Show and interviewed Sammy Davis, Jr. I remember the show but not all the details because I had been rendered unconscious with laughter.

I started watching this show because I knew that DR and Regis Philbin were friends. It made me sick. The language is horrible and he is not funny. He is mean-spirited to people of many races and cultures. I had to stop watching it because he was taking God's name in vain. Very sad.

What was with Newhart's comment on the new Las Vegas being run by the Jews? I know about his straight delivery as a comic, but if that was a joke, I don't know if most people got it. Either way, it should have been edited out.

I loved the show, he is one of the last great ones of the old vegas still around. Can anyone tell me what the beautiful music that was played just after regis philbin spoke about don. It was played while a great shot of the vegas strip was shown in the background. I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me what it was. Thanks

I was privy to see Rickles LIVE in July 1974 at the High Sierra Show Room in Lake Tahoe; his late cocktail show. The clips shown on the HBO show don't show his REALLY virulent angry hateful LIVE schtick...It has always been toned down for TV and for the live clips shown on this project. Yet, from the time I saw his Lake Tahoe show I never considered him funny. It is clear to me that he's about to die so now the director can get people to say all these good things about him even though Rickles is evilly mean in his barbs. Prior to seeing him live; I actually liked him and thought he was funny. Since then, I can not forget his malicious, hurtful, and hateful comments. AND this was in 1974 before P.C. was even known. Even now I'm gauging his humour based upon the standard at that period of time, not now. And I still find him to be a horrid, hateful man full of vitriolic acidic words that are now being chronicled as "Funny". He is not funny, nor is his humour comically witty despite this documentary. -- Edited by littleprince1977 at 12/04/2007 9:24 PM -- Edited by littleprince1977 at 12/04/2007 9:25 PM

This documentary was highly entertaining. When Don Rickles used to appear on Carson's show, ("I'm so lonely, John!" he'd whine to Carson), I'd beg my parents to let me stay up... his impromptu wisecracks and insults were always hilarious. Many of today's more caustic comics may admire Rickles, but they don't have his heart. I don't know how Don Rickles manages to be insulting, yet never contemptuous, of his audience. Today's mean-spirited humorists and comedians (comediennes) are truly looking 'down' on the audience and their targets. They're also really coarse, to the point of offensiveness. Rickles was (and is) edgy, yet not vicious. I don't know how he does it. We saw him in Vegas in 2000, and he mentioned Chicago. We clapped loudly and cheered, and Rickles cracked, "Gotta couple of SEALS up there!" I was thrilled -- I was called a "seal" by Don Rickles! Another great segment to this documentary was how celebrities described Vegas in the Mob-years, the late 50's, early 60's, before "corporate money" made every aspect of the gambling business turn a profit. They described the glamor, the etiquette, (ladies wore gloves, men wore ties and suits). How interesting, and what a contrast to the mobster brutality, this graceful, dignified way to attend shows. It was the Rat Pack era, too, and the snapshot of Vegas from those glory days is fascinating. I'm also a huge fan of Bob Newhart, and enjoyed him talking about Rickles, too. It's just a marvelous time capsule, as well as providing us a glimpse of a comedic master. Hey, Rickles even got photographed with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Don Rickles, you are one comedic innovator. Just you, the mike, and the stage. No special effects or outlandish costumes. We who grew up watching Carson really enjoyed seeing you... and we loved seeing you in 2000.

just watched, it was terrific - I'm 46 - in this case I guess Rickles leaving a "Large carbon footprint" is a great thing for everyone who appreciates his comedy.

How could you not love Don Rickles if you love comedy. My favorite Rickles line is from 'Late Light with Conan'. Andy Richter was still his sidekick and Don was on. Don made some joke and Andy started clapping like an orangutan Don picked up on this and started making fun of his clapping. Andy got defensive and said "I'm only here for the money'...Don's great line was...'Relax you're part of the Show!'...Classic Rickles in my mind...Looking forward to the documenatary on HBO
