Sgt Mike, Us old Marines are so inspired by the Modern Marines today. But there are those special FEW of the FEW that stand out amongst the rest. Like the day at 5th Floor, East Ward when you were running out of time to drink those 2-3 quarts of awful crap so your x-rays would take. You had that great Corpsman rig up a beer-bong like contraption so you would be under the wire for your scheduled x-rays. I haven't seen this Program yet, but it probably doesn't reflect that other facet of you that makes everyone happy to be where ever you are. A quote from the LIBERTY LIMITED experience: "One of the guys was blind, but he said, 'I can't see you, but man, you must be f---ing beautiful!' " says Bennett. "I got a lump so big in my throat, I couldn't even answer him" Have a great New Year Mike. Semper Fidelis, Jack Herman father of Sgt Todd Herman (Mikes former room-mate)

Michael, I just watched Alive Day the other night and wanted to express my sincere gratitude for your service and to let you know how inspiring your story was for me. I also appreciated the irony of your glass eye with the diamonds in it ? what a statement you have made to your ex-wife. I cannot imagine the suffering you have gone through with the physical and emotional injuries that you received in Iraq, only to come home and go through a painful divorce. I am truly saddened by all that you have had to deal with. During the show I also sensed and appreciated your frustration and bitterness toward what you have had to deal with. At the same time I was also impressed with your candor and resolve to overcome and move forward; shame on us for complaining how difficult our lives are when we don?t have to deal with the physical and emotional trauma that you and thousands of veterans and families deal with on a daily basis. We should be embarrassed for feeling sorry for ourselves and a program like Alive Day helps put things into perspective. Thank you and the other ?Alive Day? Marines and soldiers for sharing your inspirational stories. Last, I was glad to see that you mentioned that you are now associated with Paws for Patriots program. My wife and I have been contributing to several guide dog programs for years and will now support Paws for Patriots as well. Best of luck, and thank you for your sacrifice and service. Semper Fi, Curt

I happened across a newspaper clipping on the Alive Day project during finals week and decided to look into it more. I read your story and felt compelled to respond. I'm a college student at UC Davis, and have always considered myself liberal and against the war. Reading what you (and others) have gone through reminds me to be thankful to you for all you have given in the name of what you believe in. Even if it isn't a fight I can say I agree with, I whole-heartedly recognize all you have given of yourself to a country which is honored to have you a part of it. Thank you so much for your bravery both in the war and more so now. You are a hero.

Dear Michael, I recently watched the Alive Day Memories documentary during my English class in Buffalo, New York; and found your story amazing and inspiring. Although I am against the war currently occurring in Iraq, I have a great amount of respect and admiration for you and the other soldiers who day in and day out risk their lives to protect our country. It is soldiers like you that make me feel honored and privileged to live in the United States. By overcoming the attack on your life you have greatly inspired and given hope to people throughout our country. I have no doubt that you will be able to conquer your blindness, which you have already demonstrated with your involvement with a guide dog school. I would just like to wish you an easy recuperation, and best wishes finishing your education and getting back to work. You are one of the most remarkable people I have ever learned about. Thank you so much for everything you have done, and continue to do for our country. Sincerely, Julian Rothschild

Dear Michael, My name is Geoffrey Hurley and I just watched you in your documentary on television. I would just like to let you know that I am very proud to have people like you serving for me in the military. It makes me feel so much more protected and proud to be an American. You are a shining example of a dedicated soldier, and knowing what bravery means. Just going to Iraq is brave. Giving up your eye sight must be tough, but just like you overcame the explosion, you are overcoming your blindness and succeeding greatly. Keep working hard, and doing what you love because you deserve it. Don?t feel like you are below anyone either, because that is B.S. You are on the same playing field if not above it. It is not an easy job to be a soldier, particularly in this war, or in any war so you should never feel like you let anyone down by getting injured. You certainly didn't let your friends, family, or nation down when you survived that blast. I think you took the whole situation professionally and perfectly. You are truly what is depicted when we think of a U.S soldier. Good luck in the future. I hope everything will work out for you as I am sure it will. I just would like to say again, you did a hell of a job in Iraq, and you a hell of a guy. God Bless. Sincerely, Geoffrey Hurley -- Edited by gdhurle at 11/26/2007 5:23 PM

Dear Michael, I posted my message to you in the wrong place the first time, so i will repeat it here. I don't know if you remember, but I sent you some letters of support a few years ago. I've always wondered how you were getting along, and imagine my surprise when I flipped on the HBO special and there you were!! You've made amazing progress, Michael, and I'm so damn proud of you. I hope you will continue to work hard and inspire those around you. God bless you Michael. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Semper Fi. Your Marine Mom friend always.

Michael~ First let me start by saying personally Thank You. I know it is such a small gesture for what you had to sacrifice for our freedom. I also would like to say how inspiring you truly are, for someone to defeat such tragedy. I am very blessed to know that there is someone in this world like you, you are irreplaceable and any woman in her right mind would be lucky to have you. I will continue to pray for you and all the men and women serving in our armed forces. "Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful." -Joshua J. I just wanted to say thank you for everything you have done for our country. It takes a lot of courage and strength to do what you did. The way that you have the drive to get through all the things that have come in your way is very inspiring. You have been through a lot and to see how you can still come out of it with perpective. Once again thank you so much for everything you have done for this country. Its selfless. God Bless you and hope everything is well -- Edited by pjlasky at 09/26/2007 5:00 AM
