In 1997, actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi, on one condition: it had to be racially integrated. His offer was ignored. Ten years later, Freeman offered again - and this time, the school board accepted. And in 2008, Charleston High School had the first ever integrated prom in its history-though not without opposition. Premieres Monday, July 20 at 9:00PM ET/PT

This one had me gobsmacked honestly. It shocks me that things are so rigid, but at the same time with the way extremists are up in arms in the south over a black president, it doesn't. I grew up on the upper east coast & during my high school and college years, my relations with people was universal. Friends of every nationality welcomed me into their lives. Weekend parties and dinners with Japanese friends & their Mexican roommates. Hindu weddings & Italian festivals. Not to mention my love life. Chinese, Polish, Egyptian, Italian, Irish, Panamanian, Puerto Rican. The list goes on. Variety is the spice of life and the world is so much bigger than your town. The sooner they realize that the world has so much more to offer, the more they will grow mentally and spiritually. Kudos to you HBO. Great Doc.

Thank you Morgan Freeman. You took this town to the next step in a positive direction and you did it with respect. As someone who grew up in a small southern racist town, this documentary hit close to home. I also watched the sequel to this and I cannot believe they are still having a white only prom. If anyone from CHS is reading this please... Do a little research on Randolph County High School in Wedowee, Alabama... Don't let your silly disagreement over the pigment of someone's skin rip your town apart. Don't let it go that far. Use us as an example of what not to do. Communication and respect are key to tearing down such horrible barriers. Congratulations on how far you have come and Good Luck on your journey to healing as a community.

I had no idea these things were still going on. These white parents are ignorant. It makes me sick. I'm white and live right outside of Kansas City in a suburb area. Blacks and whites here are intergrated and the world hasn't stopped so obviously it isn't a big deal. I like that its this way. I have a 5 year old daughter and I am proud she's growing up in an area where this isn't an issue. My husband and I could careless who she's friends with or who she dates as long as they respect her and treat her right. I know there is racism everywhere but it ends with us the parents. We need to step up and show our children all people need to be treated with the same respect as they want to be treated. The way we do this is lead by example. Break this cycle thats been holding us down. We can't fix what was done in the past all we can do is grow from it and move on.

My husband and I watched this program the other night. It's hard to believe that in this day & age that racism still abounds, but human beings never cease to amaze me. The children who are open minded made me proud and the others (& their parents) I feel sorry for. Hurry up and release the next one. I'd like to see how these kids have done since they graduated and what the Class of 2009 has done. Please keep showcasing documentaries that show the human condition-the good, the bad, and unfortunately, the ugly.
