Taxi to the Dark Side

Winner of a 2008 Academy Award®, this acclaimed film takes a disturbing in-depth look at the questionable interrogation practices used by U.S. military guards on prisoners in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay in the years following 9/11.

Such an important issue for our military forces, I am glad to see this documentary premiering September 29th. So many disturbing and horrible incidents came out of our zeal to capture suspected insurgents and terrorists, rumors of cruel techniques being used by our government and military, to confirmed abuses of prisoners. I'm really looking forward to watching this. Anyone else plan on tuning in? What are your thoughts?

I agree that a follow up is called for. Very scary indeed. And people wonder where conspiracy theories come from.

I think one of the saddest parts is that there is no responsability or accountability for what went on. We can all see with our own eyes exactly what our goverment is capable of, and it's scary. All under the guise of keeping us safe?

Michael, never. I really believe that the "powers that be" behind all this will never be held accountable. The scapegoats are the personnel out in the field doing what they are told to do.

I agree with you about a follow-up film to Taxi. I hope they will consider it. These incidents have indeed tarnished our already fragile reputation on the world stage, making it even more dangerous for our troops wherever they are deployed, if that is at all possible.

This is not an easy one to sit through that's for sure. I was shocked quite a few times by what I heard. It really makes you wonder where your rights begin and where they end as an american. Did the end justify the means? I don't think we will ever really know.

I've just finished watching Taxi to the Dark Side and though I was deeply disturbed by the material I feel this is an invaluable document and compilation of the truth about the realities of the war on terror and what is surely the criminal extent to which the Bush administration has gone in pursuit of its goals to obtain information. This film aptly tracks the violations of the Geneva Convention, the efforts by the administration to circumvent it and the courts, and what tragically constitutes the inhumane and often deadly abuse of prisoners, many of whom arrived in the system with no evidence of connection with terrorist activities.

Many thanks to the filmmakers involved --this is a vital chronicle for our nation and our responsibilities.

Viewing this piece, one has to ask when will those responsible at the higher levels of the Bush administration and military be brought to justice in our courts? I would hope the producers of this film continue to follow up on this important subject as our nation continues to face these disturbing truths and work to repair our deeply tarnished international reputation.

My thoughts on the film were these:

1) it never ceases to amaze me the concept that some people have a 9 to 5 job that consists of getting up, having breakfast and then off to work to torture people. And then after a hard day of beating abusing humiliating another human, they end their shift, go home, eat, play with the dog, screw their mate and then off to bed. I used to read about how people couldn't understand how the state mechanism of the Hilter's Germany had so many willing participants. But I can see now how easy it could work.

2) I think that before anyone can advocate torture as a policy, they themselves, and their immediate family members have to voluntarily undergo the same torture techniques they advocate.

The reason being that there are absolutely NO insurance that the people in custody are actually involved in terrorist activities. So before people can advocate torture as a ostensibly harmless technique to obtain information, and dismiss that innocents are held without cause, being at the receiving end of what they advocate seems essential.

I somewhat suspect not too many people would actually end up arguing for torture as a state policy.

I am really interested to see how this is presented. This has been such a hot topic in the past. I hope we are given some new insights.
