I live in china, know nothing about American politics, so I really have some difficulty in understanding Angels in America. But I was totally touched by it.
I just love it! It is a great show. Every actress and actor is perfect in this show!

I didn't got the oppotunity to watch the Broadway version, but luckily I got the DVDs of this TV show. It's GREAT!

Sorry for my English. Hope you can understand.
Hope I can be penfriends with fans of Angels in America, my msn is phatomofnight@hotmail.com

My daughter & I just watched all 6 hours in one sitting on Mother's Day last Sunday. Awesome, one of the best Mother's Days I've ever had.

I have one question: When Prior is in the hospital, we keep seeing the TV images without sound & it looks like someone's funeral, with Ronald Reagan, some of the Kennedy family, and others that I recognize from that era in Washington DC (my hometown) but I can't remember their names.

I don't see any other reference in the credits anywhere.

Has anyone figured out what that was all about?

Thanks!

in reply to: "auroraut"'s comments of july 2005.

Regarding your standpoints: I cannot see why feel you would have to symphatize with the gay community? or with HIV+ people? or anyone?
Do whatever, but seems this movie has touched you.

this movie certainly does not make you symphatise with any particular group but it does show you that we are prejudiced by thinking someone else may be prejudiced (e.g. gay people may think that a mormon mother would never help, yet she opens up), so it means we are only to extent defined by our religion's borders, or sexuality borders, but at the end what matters is what kind of person we are, there are some general "good" principles.

to say this " IF suddenly the whole world would become homosexual then the entire human race would die in less than 150 years." would mean that homosexuals are stupid, if it came to extinction, i am sure some gay men and some lesbians would do something about it, after all it takes only a couple of minutes, even less, to copulate, right? if they would not want to extend extra sexual activity, and in lack of artificial insemmination.

in addition, be real - many babies are born in very poorly shaped hetero families and really torn apart hetero-relationships. not to mention hunger, not so in the US but overall. see a film "bird cage" to relate what family means.

if you are hetero only to make babies, good luck to you, because hetero people copulate only for short periods of lifetime (maybe avg. 4,5hrs per month on average). bringing up kids can be done, on the other hand, by quality people only.

you write: "My Social and Ethics teacher asked us to apply a principal to everyone. If it could be applied to everyone then it was a good principal. Love works. Charity works. Peace works. Homosexuality does not."
well, there are many door sizes. for instance, some very heavy people cannot pass through average doors. does it mean average door size should be expanded? see, average principle does not apply to all. same for cars? see why principles must be guided by various differences. so you have additional principles which narrow them down.

in other states (countries) like where i am right now, you cannot, there are exclusivities non-stop.

i do not think that even in the US you can apply principles to all. if you could aplly the same principle to the whole population, it would be remarkable don't you think? likewise, hetero principle(s) cannot be applied to all (having children and likewise, right?). so should the state take away childred from heterosexuals? or what....? such analogies you mention are almost hatred, but i am sure you did not mean anything bad.

i am very sorry you find this film filthy, the film is not but such is reality.

in any case, i am glad i read your standpoint to remind me i also need to be more open.

FYI - I saw Ben Shenkman in a great little short called "Waking Dreams" at a film festival a few weeks ago. Tina Holmes from "Six Feet Under" was also in it. Great performances from both. The director said it is (or will be?) available on a DVD collection called "Celebrity Mix" from TLA video.

Wow...
I can't believe that this movie still rattles so many people's feathers. Amazzzzzing.
I love it.
Just pulled your last comment out of the bunch, and wanted to make contact with someone, anyone who was still obsorbing the movie and it's theme.
Personally, I believe that this is one of the best subject matters of all time.
The one that makes the most think besides the subject of God himself.
Now THAT'S powerful!
Lets have some fun, and raise as many eye brows as we possibly can.
As a matter of fact, thinking about starting a seminar sweep called..."Think" Seminars.
Keep your eyes and ears open.

As though the environmental crises occuring the world over isn't going to wipe out the human species eventually anyway? I hardly think the largest threat to the survival of the human species is homosexuality sweetie. Take a look at global warming, pollution of all sorts, and the obsession with oil to learn more about the decline of humanity...

I would like to inform the group that I am starting my third viewing of Angels in America. I agree with others that say that it needs to be watched without interruptions. I try to watch it on a weekend. I must however admit that it is quite taxing emotionally. Both times I have watched it before I felt very drained afterwards.

This play makes no pretenses nor offers any sugar coating. Everything it presents is so real, so urgent, so frustrating that it puts us face to face with things we think we MUST brush aside if we are to have daily lives. The real question then becomes: can we live our lives with these issues always in the foreground? or is it the fact that we have pushed these issues so out of the way that our lives have become unbearable?

auroraut:

You are entitled to your opinions and beliefs but you must have misunderstood what open-minded means. Your hate towards anything and everything that is in the slight bit out of your realm is pouring out in every single word of your posting.

You are absolutely right, this movie is a complete mismatch for your intellect and orientation. It requires a sense of humor, humility, and a general willingness to step off of the pedestal of holliness and absolute morality.

Your rant about how this person and that corporation ought to be ashamed of themselves comes across as plain juvenile. I wish you and yours a swift healing from the single-mindedness you have found yourself so blindly addicted to.

Your hatred is a liability to this world. Heal thyself.

Hi all.
I am looking for the name of the tune (song) playing when Prior has one of his dreams, and he thinks he is dancing with Lu ("Angels in America"). I couldn't find it in the soundtrack probably because it's not an original HBO piece... Can anyone help?

Thanks
Roey

Firstly, free expression is free expression. Secondly, this film isn't anti-anything. Kushner creates realistic characters who have their own opinion about several controversial topics. I am angered by people who think that the film is 'filthy' and will dirty 'good christian minds.' The film will persuade those who want to be persuaded, but ultimately, this film should be trusted to the intelligent public of america and other countries. If you believe homosexuality is wrong - than you will probably still believe it is wrong after watching this movie. If not, than great! A film has given you something to think about and consider. But otherwise, certainly this film should not be seen by children but any thinking adult can watch this film and judge for him or herself the merits of its themes. This is a film that brings a lot of people a lot of joy. This film, like the topics within it, aren't going away. It doesn't discriminate anybody. If the LCD church is worried about how this film portrays their minority they can join the club of millions of gay men who don't appreciate the way they're portrayed in a lot of films.

After reading GayIthican's post, I realize that one has said it so much better than I.

to get away from cage rattling,
does anyone want to have a discussion on the content of the series, the metaphors, historical footnotes, charachters, anything? I've watched it completely through yesterday and I still need to absorb it. Any longtime viewers out there? Any insights? Most everyone knows that it is good, but why? Let's talk.
