I was in total shock after reading the New York Times article on Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I mean - for your writer to actually admit so matter-of-factly that "everyone" at HBO strongly felt that a white character was necessary as a lead in order to appeal to a wider audience - unbelievable! I'm not sure exactly why I am so surprised that Hollywood continues to be racist and backward in their feelings of minorities in leads, but jeez, guys - it's 2007! Don't you think your audience might be sophisticated enough to look and listen to a brown lead?? And maybe even become emotionally attached to a person of color???

I read a recent NY Times article and was disappointed to learn that the filmmakers are not staying true to the book, with the purpose of making the story more palatable to a larger audience. This seems completely unnecessary and insulting. I am sure it will be worth watching, but I think HBO should have kept to a higher standard.

I'm on the fence about whether or not I will watch the movie now after reading this article in the NY Times: http://www.indianz.com/News/2007/002813.asp (if you can't access it from the Indianz.com site then try :http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/09/arts/television/09knee.html?ex=1336363200&en=12f6721b23d5188b&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink)

Why do mainstream (read white) viewers need their hands held to tell this story? What's wrong with/ straight historical fact built into a more manageable narrative? What's the difference between telling this story and the story of Elizabeth I? Why no push to hand hold "mainstream" American audiences through the story of a "foreign" Queen?

It's sad that some white people are so afraid of the horrors that their ancestors committed that they will massage a story to assuage white guilt.

Bottom line is that people of all colors have committed atrocities against one another from time and memorial and continue to do so to this very day. By not facing the past honestly, you do the future a great disservice.

You also perpetuate the tradition of blind denial and disregard for a holistic view of American history that plagues this country.

Though I'm glad that an attempt to tell this story has been made, I wish the execs and the writers would have trusted the intelligence of the viewing audience, whatever their color, to process historical fact and to find it compelling enough without the aid of candy-coated fiction.

When crimes against humanity are committed we all bear responsibility for those actions and we all wind up with blood on our hands. That's the legacy of a shared history-good and bad-for better or for worse.

If people (especially white people) are uncomfortable with the horrors of the past-so they should be that means there's a shred of hope that some time in the future we won't be doomed to keep pressing repeat.

:_ I read this book a long time ago. A friend that I shared good books with gave the book to me. It changed my mind forever about our early government. I was brought up to think our government was always right. The biggest shock was that while Abe Lincoln was freeing the slaves he was letting our Army wipe out the Indians. Shame on our forefathers. I hope this show tells the story like it was written.
