This was a wonderful movie. great characterization and brilliant cast. My one and only concern in this film was John Voss. He was the character I looked forward to having a positive ending. I mean you simply dont torture a character and have no ending for him. I felt for this character the most. I even cries and I did not expect the characters final scene to be in the back of a police car. I would have liked for him to have a better outcome with Tick's relationship with him. The poor boy already had a terrible life and I would have liked this characters final scene to have ended better. Does anyone agree?

finally got around to watching the film yesterday am, and LOVED IT! i have the book lying around my apt. somewhere; have never read anything by richard russo, but will try to get whatever he comes up with next.

i live in portland, maine (yes...the big city of portland referred to by ed harris' character as a place where all the smart kids at college (i assume he meant U of Maine @ Orono) come from..that and boston). had read about the production up in waterville and what a big deal the premiere was for the state. didn't have hbo at the time, so never got the chance to see it initially.

but i can't believe what an amazing cast that paul newman put together: seems like ever terrific character actor around is in this (dennis farina is hilarious as a viagra chewing gym owner married to miles exwife). and most surpisingly, newman's lovely wife joanne woodward plays the evil bitch role....and does it just a few degrees to the right of her usual sweet natured roles, which makes her performance even better.

i suppose one of the major themes that russo was exploring was the nature of cruelty: why and how folks are cruel to one another. there is always some backstory to what seems inexplicably mean at the time an event happens. ex: the jock, who is maybe a bit over the top in his meanness has an ass**** for a father, and we understand just a bit where the kid is coming from..(.also: how in the world would tick ever have gone out with this jerk? anyway..not to quibble...)

thanks to hbo films for hitting another home run!!! this is exactly why i pony up the extra $20 or so each month: don't really spend a lot of time watching hbo (i mean, how many times can you watch shrek 2 anyway??), but the sopranos (2006: best season EVA..critics be damned!), big love (gets better each week), entourage, larry david, bill maher, etc. thanks so much to hbo for being the best network on tv....

I just watched to mini series of Empire Falls and it greatly leaves me wanting more. Are there any plans of picking up the story line and running with it? I think it would become a hit.
I grew up in New England and now live in AK, so I love to hear the accents, see the familiar country side etc....
Please let me know if and when to look forward to it?:D

It is in my humble opinion that one should not expect to be able to understand all of the nuances of this wonderful book by watching the movie. Try as it might, there is no real genuine way for the movie to convey the emotions and complexities of the book. Most book to movie adaptations leave you feeling unfulfilled and gathering loose ends, as there is no way to fit all of a nearly 500-page book's little intricacies into a standard film's running time. Having read the book, I am in no way unsatisfied. If you in any way enjoyed this movie, you should read the book to discover a whole new side of the story. All of your questions will be answered.

To be perfectly honest, I am a bit confused as to why someone would criticize the movie adaptation of any book without having read the book itself.

It was a great production. I personally would have preferred another episode, and have the characters developed further. Like the crooked cop. Having two episodes just seemed too short for the story, to me.

I was moved, this movie is incredible. I was born and raised in southern mass, near fairhaven about thirty minutes from the cape. I moved to virginia with my hubby will he was in the service, then moved to maine when he got out. Empire falls was shot in skowheagen maine, twenty minutes from my house. the story line is incredible, even knowing it was all fictional you can drive through skowhegan and just imagine that is what happened there. They way it portrays small towns is to a tee, people here in maine are having it really rough. Factories are closing, people can't find work. I should know i have been looking for work for about three years now. I applaud hbo for this movie-

YES!!You are right! I went to the Tower Records site and listened to "Run" and although it was such a small snippet of the song (not the refrain--which would have been recognizable);I was still able to tell it was the correct song. So, I bought the album and it is really good! Thanks--

Not familiar with their body of work the way I am with Coldplay's. I will say that the vocalist in that song sounds alot like the singer of Lifehouse. Now that you have me completely intrigued, I'm going to research it.

Do you think it could be "Lifehouse"? It sounded to me like it was "Switchfoot", but when I tried to find it on their albums I couldn't seem to locate it.Any thoughts?

definitely not "The Scientist." Not only did I listen to that ColdPlay album endlessly when it came out ('03, I believe), I watched this flick way too many times, almost to the point that, as a writer, I sketched of all of the different scenarios that could have come after the point in which the story ends. Could be a series, yes, but all of us diehards would just end up being disappointed in it, I bet. But no, that song is definitely not "The Scientist." Not even close.

Are you sure that the promo song is "The Scientist"? I have been trying to figure out what song it is also---I just listened to Cold Play and I'm pretty sure that's not it.It's got a similarly haunting melody, though.
