Brendan Gleeson as Winston Churchill

There were some gaps, but I think "Into the Storm" was a good film. Brendan Gleeson is one of my favorite actors. He had Churchill's speech and walk down without being a caricature. I actually cried a little when the theater gave him a standing O.

I have noticed some adaptations of true events to film are -well, in Casino, Ginger had one child. In real life (real name Geri Rosenthal) she had 5 kids and a daughter (by the Lester Diamond fellow) who was already 20 by the time she married Lefty(ace) Rosenthal. So maybe the Maddox fellow was a composite.

I enjoyed the picture very much and can clearly remember listening to many of Chiurchill's great speeches in 1940 (I was 10 yrs.). I recognized many of the anecdotes and presumed that most of them were based on true events. The very touching scene with the RAF pilot who won the Victoria Cross I hope was true, but I could not find any award of the VC to a Wing Commander Maddox (?) in late 1940 or any other time. Did my bad hearing betray me again, was there a deliberate name change, or - worst of all - was this just a fabrication?

to every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late
And how can a man die better
than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his gods.

Does anyone remember the poem Churchill quoted at the end of the Film? It was by Thomas Macauley and very moving but I can't remember the title. It was about a soldier guarding the gates in the memory of his slain fathers. Thanks.

When you get a chance watch the HBO Movie "The Gathering Storm" you will probably be shocked at the difference in quality, I'm not saying that Brendan Gleeson didn't handle the role but rather the role that they handed him was low budget compared to the first movie.

I saw bits of it.
PBS did a doc a few months ago interviewing his granddaughter and she talked about his time in Africa.
Some people think Churchill was psychic. He had an incident where he was having a dinner party and told the maid to move all the food-even the uncooked stuff-into the dining room. Moments later a bomb hit the back of the house.

Did you see the first HBO movie about Churchill "The Gathering Storm" with Albert Finney, because I felt completely let down by "Into the Storm". Based on the quality of the first chapter it clearly missed the mark.
