age appropriate?

I see this is rated TVPG, but I have no idea what content is involved...hbo usually puts out content via hbofilms, but I am wondering if this miniseries is appropriate for 8 & 11 year olds? if anyone has seen the 1st 2 episodes, please let me know what kind of content there is in regards to nudity, swearing, violence.

thanks

You're not stupid Wazzy. We use the term "tarred and feathered" all the time without thinking of where or how it originated. That scene really brought it home.

What I really liked about it was that it painted the Sons of Liberty in a different light. Our history books make them heroes without showing the other side. Alot of British sympathizers were burned out of their businesses and forced to flee the city of Boston. The Boston Tea Party dressed as Indians as if to throw the blame on someone else. Mob mentality is bad even if you agree with the cause.

The mastectomy scene with no anesthesia was hard for even me to watch, but i don't see why children shouldn't watch the smallpox scene. It is a scene with children after all. Kids might benefit from knowing that immunizations didn't always occur in the friendly office of a doctor who gives you a lollipop.

I think we can add the mastectomy scene to that list. Yikes!

Agree with Lorant. The tar and feathering scene bothered me too - but certainly not for the nudity. I never realized what a brutal torture that was. yes, I am really that stupid. I never realized the tar was boiling hot. Duh.

I haven't seen anything at all that a child couldn't see aside from the tarring and the smallpox scene. What a wonderful way to learn about our history! I only wonder how accurate it all is and how tempted Hollywood was to play with the facts a bit.

And isn't Laura Linney absolutely lovely in this! She is such a great actress without the constant self promotion of other actresses. She just quietly blows the competition away.

Full frontal nudity - this is what bothers some parents about this - we are doomed!

Absolutely appropriate - ffor 8 - 11 year olds! Please stop this "we must censor TV" politically correct poppy cock! This is AMERICAN HISTORY - yes they tarred and feathered so now my kids can see how far we've come (although I still feel some people do need to be tarred and feathered but I won't mention any names) - Don't forget to wear a helmet when riding you tricycle either!

I think its a great way to teach your children about history rdraughn! I agree, I wouldnt let my kids watch it alone, but being there to explain things as they go, and as you said, to "cover the eyes" works great!

I consider myself a pretty conservative parent and monitor what my children watch on TV, but I have chosen to allow my 10yr daughter to watch this with my wife and I. The innoculation, tar&feathering, and some of the french scenes are more than we care for her to see so a simple "close your eyes during this part" usually suffices. The good thing is that with the many replays on HBO and OnDemand, I can preview it once and watch it the second time with the family. I think the historical lessons are valuable for a child interested in American History. She constantly asks questions throughout the episodes.

Specifically to smallpox part, she did ask if the "diseased boy in the wagon" died which I responded yes, most likely. Times were extremely tough for the people during that time.

I would not allow my children to watch it alone.

huh, sounds like they'd squirm a bit & not sure the full frontal nudity is necessary for them, quite yet....that's a pity because otherwise it sounds like a terrific series.

thanks for your input, guess i'll have to watch it without them

> what happens in the smallpox innoculation scene?

The doctor took the fluid from the blister on an infected man's face and used it for the vaccine to inoculate Abby and the children. He then had to make incisions on everyone's arms to administer the vaccine. This was all rather graphic -- probably not the best viewing material for kids of your age.

They show an infected person in a wagon (very gross) and the doctor takes some of the boil and puts it on a dish. He makes a cut on each person's arm and uses a sharp thing to put some of the infection in their arm. I was watching a little more after making this post and I think more than anything, the dialogue would be difficult for kids to follow. I have trouble knowing what is happening sometimes and refer to the HBO description of each episode.

I have been watching this and I would say that I would not allow my children of that age to watch it. The first one shows a very graphic tarring and feathering that shocked me (this also includes nudity). The language is very tame but the there are some scenes, like one with smallpox that might scare your children. Just my thoughts. Good Luck.
