William Daniels WAS "John Adams"

While the Abby, Jefferson, Franklin and esp George Washing castings were SPOT ON!

Paul Giamatti was NO "John Adams" (No, I didn't know him personally)

No way that John Adams "obnoxiuos and disliked" was anything like the whiny, grumpy, navel gazing, wimp that Paul made out of him (and it's not Paul's fault, he was just playing the same role he's played in all his movies...)

Adams inspired men to give up their "property, their comfort and their security... to brave a storm on a siff made of paper" and continued to inspire them to make him VP and Washington's successor. If was anything like Paul's Adams, they would have wondered "Hey, maybe the whole American Revolution thing is a bad idea, huh?"

William Daniels protrayed the arrogance mixed with idealism and spirirt that could move men - even if they didn't much like him!

I'll not argue with that. William Daniels' Adams was entertaining, obnoxious but sprightly, with a crisp delivery. He was one of the better things about that film.

Paul's interpretation (or the director's) was heavier, darker, less amusing (but of course this was not a musical!), but generally quite good.

It's difficult to compare the two performances, since the "1776" movie and the HBO miniseries were so different in scope and purpose.

And 1776 is such a classic that you're right, it's hard to imagine anyone else in the rolls. But, with that said, this is no where as near as bad as when they got that whiny kid to be Darth Vader. Now THAT was a travesty!

I thought they both did a great job. I think it is hard when you are playing someone well known or in the public eye. There are so many different sides to them and one actor might be better at showing that side than another.

Great Post, Georady! Thank-you! I think the actors did very well given the poor production, poor scripting and HBO's notorious tendency to "interpret" in its own special way.
