The Heiress and the Butler

In 1987, a middle-aged Irish butler fresh out of rehab arrived on the doorstep of tobacco heiress Doris Duke. Bernard Lafferty faced an uphill battle convincing his notoriously demanding boss to keep him on staff. A mere six years later, he was inheriting her fortune.

Me too, she's a terrific actress. I thought she looked great in Mr. Woodcock though! (LOL funny movie) She's also the mom in the new Speed Racer movie coming out. :)

Susan Sarandan is amazing in that she can make you believe in her character, regardless of the make-up. Though I agree, the 50 year old look was stretching it. I also was looking for more interaction, more scenery. But otherwise I found it enjoyable. I like almost anything Susan is in.

>>> Ther is a song that Bernard sing at the piano with Nick Roff and Doris...whats the name?????

I Love the way you're breaking my heart Peggy Lee
I love the way you're breaking my heart
It's terribly, terribly, terribly, terribly thrilling
I love the way you're breaking my heart
Although you're gonna ruin it
It's heaven while you're doin' it
I love the way I feel when we kiss
You're terribly, terribly, terribly irresistible
Sigh to me, and lie to me, you really know how
It's gonna hurt tomorrow, but it feels so good now
So darling, just keep playing your part
Take your time and really finish the things that you start
'Cause I love the way you're breaking my heart!

I agree she did not look a day over 50 lol. They could have made her look much older for the movie to coincide with the real age of Duke. I did get a good laugh at the beginning of the movie with the some is real and some is made up statement :^O

A lot that was true, including her accidentally killing her driver, and her adoption of an adult Krishna woman was left out.

When interviewed, Susan Sarandan said this was a low budget production, and sadly, it's evident. This is why we didn't see any of her travel, I suppose. Also, couldn't they afford a make-up person on crew? The beautiful Sarandon is 61 and looks 38. When Duke hired Lafferty, she was 75 years old, and 80 when she died. Even sick and at her death, Duke didn't look a day over 50.

Sorry for the nitpicking. All in all, it was an entertaining hour and a half and the performances very good, the caliber I'd expect of Sarandon and Fiennes.

I do wish there was more depth to the movie. While Doris was traveling you did not get to see them travel anywhere. Just her coming and going. Bernard was getting drunk while she was away and there was no real interaction with anyone else. Letters telling him what to do and where to go but never seeing him do any of it. I kept waiting to see something real happen and it never did.

Susan was great as Doris. She did bring the character to life.

One of the reasons I found this version irritating was the interfering music. It's not that the music was bad because it was good, but so loud as to be distracting from the story.

Sarandon and Fiennes are good, but Bacall and Chamberlain were better, playing the same characters at the same stage of their lives.

Someone on the locked thread asked about the actor with the dreads.

He is Nick Rolfe, not just a pretty face but a real accomplished musician.

Great performance from 2 great actors
This rose above the routine biopic, the chemistry between Fiennes and Sarandon was brilliant.
Emmy's for both !
