How will history remember Katherine Harris?

As America hurtles toward the next presidential race, the HBO film
'Recount' will relive the fervor of 2000's messy election. Kevin Spacey
and Denis Leary take Al Gore's fight to the courts on May 25 - make your own case here on the boards, where the most cogent arguments will be featured in a special poll on HBO.com. And don't worry - this time all the votes will be counted.

The question: How will history remember Katherine Harris?

Personally I didn't like the way she was portrayed, it was distracting from the movie to see her posturing and obsessed with her looks and acting so silly.

As a woman who fell for the rhetoric. She was co chair of the RNC, did her best to give Bush the election and now she's shunned by Jeb and co. Silly woman.

HBO asks:
>"Did "Recount" feel like an Aaron Sorkin film?"

(1) Who is "Aaron Sorkin"? (without Googling, I mean.)

(2) Who cares?

Not ...

I'd like to propose a few hypotheticals as an exercise and get the community's response. Let's suppose that:

1) Gore won a closely contested election in 2000 by winning Florida's electoral votes.

2) Florida's Governeor and SoS were Democrats.

3) Florida's SoS was an African-American female.

The following questions arise:

1) Does HBO/Hollywood make this film?

2) Would America find a portrayal which makes fun of the Florida SoSs appearance and mannerisms entertaining?

Does it matter that it WAS NOT Katherine Harris who wrote the memo to DBT authorizing them to loosen their standards? Does it matter that the "purge" of voters was statutory and that she had NO OPTION but to carry out the law? Does it matter that that statute was acted on not only by Harris, but by her predecessor as well? How will history judge Katherine Harris? One would hope more honestly and fairly than HBO and the makers of this film have.

Those who aren't deluded but understand the election laws know she handled her job correctly - the ignorant ones among us who try to rewrite everything to fit their selfish template will of course remember her in an unfavorable light as they do everything else about this great country of ours that they don't agree with when things don't go their way.

Like little spoiled children they will continue to whine and moan about 2000 and hope to brainwash those in the population who don't take the time to find out for themselves what actually happened.

Shows like Recount do more harm than good - there were several inconsistencies with what really happened and the writers misquoted many charcters.

Katherine Harris will be remembered as Florida's "Brownie" among other things. She displayed a level of incompetence in carrying out her duties as Fla. Secretary of State. While Fla. law apparently allows the certifier of elections to also chair or co-chair the campaign of a candidate running for office, it clearly is a conflict of interest.

If Katherine Harris cared about the integrity of the election process in her State she should have recused herself from the certification process. Instead she chose to do everything in her power to insure George W Bush would win.

If in fact the segments of the Movie where the Republican lobbyist, nicknamed "Mac the Knife" was advising her, she is nothing more than a crook. From 2003-2007 Florida voters in the 13th Congressional District rewared her with a seat in the US House of Representatives.

I guess in addition to M's Harris there were numerous Florida voters that didn't care about the democratic process being carried out in their State. I trust history will not treat Katherine Harris very kindly as it well should.

Why is it that hosts seem to feel it's appropriate to make partisan statements on any hbo board? The hosts should make some attempt to appear neutral - otherwise your credibility is completely out the window.

Katherine Harris will be remembered as the bimbo riding a horse wearing a push up bra and too much makeup.

As a foundation of justice and practitioner of grace and decorum against all odds.

She was the standard-bearer for nonpartisan defense of the rule of law and we were fortunate she was in office as FL Secretary of State at this crucial time that time she was.

I do not think that history will not be kind to Katherine Harris. It is simple to say that she was between a rock and hard place, but no one can negate the fact that Katherine could have have done the fair thing and allowed the re-vote. An opportunity was giving to her to be on side of voters, but she did not seem capable of doing that. I do not know if was necessarily out of partisanship or just self-involvement, or perhaps both. Of course, we may know the complete story of what happened in the Florida, but understand that it is important to learn from the mistakes of the past. It is important to implement a system where every citizen's vote is counted. It is important that more than party lines to value the right to vote, and there are times when we take for granted. Politicians count on low voter turn out, and I believe if were more involved in the political process, then more people would be more willing to exercise their right. We need to learn how to improve the process so that this does not happen again.
