Protecting the Public or Downplaying the Sacrifice?

Has the administration?s policy of restricting images of killed servicemen protected grieving families from politics? Or has it downplayed their sacrifices?

Couldn't have said it better, Maggie. Beautifully said. :)

We tend to get desensitized to many things anymore. Witnessing things on the news daily, video games, movies, all of it brings violence and tragedy and we almost get 'used' to seeing it. I am really grateful to HBO for putting a human face back on the sacrifices, the bravery, and the true gift that our military provides us with every single day.

I read about this the other day, and was just felt so glad to see this happening. I think it's very important to bring this to the public. The realities of war I think are lost on alot of Americans watching a world away. These men and women make it possible for us to live the way we do, and we owe them our eternal gratitude and respect. Great development.

It is the utmost of honors. The care and devotion shown to our fallen soldiers is incredibly emotional and personal. It's like a huge extended family and they are treated as such, with extreme dignity and respect.

I'm a bit late replying but it's a good topic.
I had 2 brothers, 1 older, 1 younger, in the service, not in wartime, in the late 70s. One went to Korea, my mother was inconsolable with fear. But he came back.
So when I watch 'Taking Chance', I see my brothers and their possible outcome. The young guy escorting his brother. Oh man. It's not like my brothers and I can get along for more than one day per year, but I remember when we were young, we got along and laughed.
If my brother's casket was treated with as much respect as they are treated, I would never mind that his remains, cloaked in the flag of the country he and I would die for, were shown in all honors.
I mean, come on.

For the families, I would imagine seeing these images is a personal, individual choice. For the rest of us, personally I believe that restricting these images does more harm than good. The American public should be reminded of the sacrifices that these most brave of men and women have given for the safety and freedom of others. Downplaying or restricting these images counteracts that. When I see them, I say a prayer for each one and thank them in my own way. These are true heroes in every sense of the word.

To me, this is clearly meant as a policy to maintain moral support for the war. Americans don't like seeing their countrymen come home in coffins, and it would likely lessen their support for the cause.
