In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Americans felt uncertain about how to proceed with their lives. The game of baseball provided welcome relief as the country found itself rooting for the New York Yankees, who had come to symbolize the city of New York. Share your stories here. Nine Innings From Ground Zero Premieres Tuesday, September 14.

At home in Arizona. Being a night person, I slept through the attacks. Getting up, I checked my answering machine and a message from my girl friend. She told me to turn on the TV. She stated "our lives have changed and will never be the same". I turned on CNN and my mind would NOT accept the video of the Towers coming down. It kept telling me "that's some cool simulation" (KEY being SIMULATION). Some cable players (MTV, VH1, to name a few) replaced regular programming with their parent company news reports while others went black with chyron that simplied read "In Rememberance". I stayed off of the internet for the most part for about two weeks. It wasn't very important to me. My parents had December 7th and World War Two. My grandparents had World War One. My son and I have September 11th (I refuse to call it "9/11") Makes me wonder what my granddaughter might go through. -- Edited by desertskies at 07/06/2006 12:52 AM

At the University of Maryland... I woke up at 10:00 for my 11:00 class and I turned on ESPN like would always do but it wasn't Sportcenter. It was Peter Jennings and the World Trade Center on fire. I watched both towers fall and that is when I left for class. My one roommate didn't go to college and was an electrician in DC from 6-2 but my other roommate was still asleep until yelled "Holy Shit!" as I left which ultimatley started his Sept 11. I walked across the street to my friend's house (who is Arab, he is Morrocan though) and I said "Have you heard?" He said "No". I said "2 planes just took out the World Trade Center, its gone" and he said "Uh-oh, they are gonna come looking for me." Puzzled by his sarcasam, I walked to class not knowing that the Pentagon was hit and what causing all kinds of EMS vehichles down Rt. 1. I got to class and my prof said "I don't know what is going on today, but whatever it is I'm sure is more important than whatever we could cover in this class today. You all are exused."

Colorado, far from the tragedy that was happening in the city I have come to love. I've made New York a frequent stop since then. This day my son was born. I cried when I realized what was occurring. Then I was yelled at (thank GOD) to realize my own situation. Then my son

I was in school, we had just finished a Business Law test. I went to the student lounge like I do everyday to smoke a cigarette before next class. I called my girlfriend on my cell phone, she told me that one of the towers was hit by a plane. She thought accident, I immediately thought terrorism. As she's describing what happened, the second plane hit, I was speechless. I went to my class on time, but the topic of the day was not Academic related. When we heard the fourth plane crashed outside of Pittsburgh(my home), downtown was evacuated. It was insane, no one could leave because of the traffic, all the business closed at the same time, and cell phones stopped working. I understand that our city got off easy, but it was an experience that I'll never forget.

I was in Air11 WPIX's News Helicopter taking the pictures the world was watching. We were the last civilian aircraft still flying over the United States when we were told we needed to land. Before that we were doing our news shots and assisting with identifying other aircraft with our gyrocam for the powers in charge of the airspace. There were many heros that day, some we know about, others we never will. God bless them all. Chet

Still to this day I remember what happen in detail. I remember that 9/11 was a beautiful day. Fall was coming on etc. I was on my pc IM with a friend of mind. When the news broke over the radio. Around 9 O'clock I went to the break room to see the tv. I couldn't believe the towers were on fire. I saw the second one collaspe I couldn't believe it. Everyone I remember including myself was stuuned. Next thing I heard the Pentagon was hit and later the I heard of the crash in Shankervilles,Pa. That day everything at the office was suspended it felt like. The events of the morning preoccuppied everyone. It's day that I haven't forgotten for I felt like I lived it. It was surreal. I had nightmares of the two towers falling down. Anyone had nightmares. After I saw the documentry tuesday night I believe the Yankees game raised everyone spirits when they were down. Also after I saw the documentry it made me a Yankees fan too.

This can't be. This country.. It's free! It's got bravery.. Nobility.. Sanctity.. Who is he? To attack me? My family! Yesterday I had serenity.. Security.. Blissfully..happy.. Ignorantly.. Sure of my safety.. Then The Sky Came Tumbling Down. Those animals tried To take our pride. And these tears that I've cried.. Make me stronger inside. And I BURN with pride For my city.. My country.. My people! Never Again! God Bless America. Kris.

I had moved from NY to Florida the year before 9/11 and had gone back to NY for Christmas to visit my family. My boyfriend and I tried to go up to the top of the WTC over that vacation but the line was over 1.5 hours long. So we just took a picture of one of the towers and left. He's born and raised in Miami and had never been to NYC. The morning of the attack I was on my way to work and I was thinking about that day that we didn't get to go up to the observation deck. I was also thinking that maybe in the summer when we went back there would be less of a line and we could go up. When I got to work that morning I heard from a co-worker that a plane had crashed into one of the towers, think to myself that's abusurd. But lo and behold it wasn't. My cousin's husband was supposed to have been riding the Path into the WTC that morning to visit one of his stores (he's a regional manager w/ Starbucks, he was a ditrict manager at the time), but got caught up doing something else and never made it in. A very good friend who worked for the NYSE was over seas on vacation. But having said all that I still lost two friends, both were Port Authority police officers. I still can't think of that day or see anything related to 9/11 without breaking in to tears.

It was early September 11th, 2001 (Phoenix, AZ) and my mom was having severe cancer pain. I went to lay with her to comfort her and we talked and laughed (all night) about life. She was still trying to work as a nurse and had to go to work in the morning. I had BIG plans. I was leaving at 9 am for Los Angeles, CA to see my favorite person in concert. MADONNA! I was so excited, I had never seen her before. This was going to be awesome. My friend called me at 7 am to tell me, "I'm not letting you leave." I was like, "What are you talking about." She told me to turn on the TV. And when I turned on the TV, there in front of my face was one of the World Trades coming down. (Much to my knowledge at that time, they had already collasped earlier in the morning.) I was like, Oh my god! I have family that lives out there. My mom had already left for work. I was shocked. Like many people my flight never left for L.A. and my vacation was spent watching the 9/11 coverage from my couch. Since then, my mom has passed away and I finally got to see Madonna this May in Vegas.

I work in a community hospital about 60 miles outside of New York - we immediately went into our disaster mode to prepare for what everyone thought would a huge influx of patients who would be transferred out of the NYC hospital - the NYC hospitals would then be able to care for the hundreds and hundreds of injured from the towers. Throughout the day we discharged any patients who were able to be sent home - during the afternoon people started coming in to donate blood - hundreds of people came to donate blood - they were desperate to do something - anything they could. I remember late on 9/11 the realization starting to hit us that there would not be hundreds of injured - slowly we began to realize that very few would be coming out of the rubble. All the preparation for injured - all the blood donated would not be needed - no one was going to come out. The next day my husband and I hiked up a mountain in our town - Turkey Mountain - you can see the NY skyline from there - we could always see the Towers -- that day we could see the smoke - people were up there with flags and flowers - all of us still hoping that somehow someone would be rescued - days later it rained and that I think was my saddest day for me - when it poured and poured on NYC and the workers all stood in the pouring rain and looked on at the smoldering rubble. The rain seemed to end the hope - it seemed to say it was done - no one would come out alive.
