Si se puede, as Ramon might put it. Anyways ... thanks. Now that I have the DVD set, I'll watch a few episodes back to back every now and then and never fail to see something new. It's that richly layered and that wonderful. JFC's characters live on in our imaginations, as some of the writers on this board have shown us. I'll never be able to forget that "F" on Butchie's door. It seemed to stand for "failure" or "fuck up" for so long. By the end, it stood for "father." (Must I say "for me?" Isn't "for me" understood?) We don't remember John's father's words because they are not some long lost, almost forgotten part of dead history. They are always present; heard, not remembered. Butchie becoming a father requires him living in the present, seeing what is in front of him, working with what he has. I love that. -- O-< Primum non nocere. O-<

What a rare and welcomed sight it is, Eccless,- your post here, we all wish you could come often, your insights are always deep and accurate. I often read your posts on Deadwood, chuckling at humorous, admiring your eloquence and thinking I'd loved to have had a teacher like you in college, mine taught more about social realism and Marx and never religion. Afraid though I'd never get SAT score more than 900. Also can't comment on your food preferences, it's another foreign language to me, but "Yes we can" we can say together, I guess. Anyways, thanks.

Another thing struck me as I watched this episode the other day. I had been struck by it before, but had not commented. One of the ways in which David Milch suggests the connectedness of the characters in this episode is through Meyer. As an attorney, Meyer is all about confidentiality and attorney/client privilege. Remember that when Cissy calls him on Day Seven to tell him she's "divorcing her asshole husband", he pretends he's talking with someone else so as to keep things confidential. "Oh, well, good for you for not disclosing, Dickstein," Cissy tells him, in mid-fury. Anyways ... in this episode, it becomes painfully clear to Meyer that this collection of individuals see themselves more and more as a body in which information is shared. So, when Cissy, at the diner talking with Jerri, hands him the unsigned document from the hospital, Meyer tries to keep the document private. Jerri tells him in her own sweet way, "She's already showed it to me, fuckin' douchebag." Cissy then tells Jerri: Butchie's fuckin' Kai's brains out." Later, during the poignant scene at the motel in which Kai emerges from Room F with a sober Butchie, Cissy tells Barry about how the hospital is planning to "ass-fuck" the doctor. Meyer is once again surprised and somewhat dismayed that this information has been shared by Cissy, this time to someone she barely knows. The internet is big and huge and makes information sharing that much easier for members of the body. That was just one thought which flashed through my mind as I watched this again. -- O-< Primum non nocere. O-<

i am so pissed about the cancellation of this show. It is the one HBO series that i actually watched and enjoyed. I am not a big TV person but this is the one series i have ever watched weekly and planned on continuing to watch weekly. The cancellation is a big joke and half of the other shows are not even nearly as good as john from cincinnati was and do not deserve to be aired. Flight of the Concords? are you kidding me that show is terrible. John from Cincinnati invokes individuals to use critical thinking skills. The show leaves individuals wondering what will happen next and allows them to configure their own ideas on the show. It is like a good book, i good book keeps the reader guessing unlike every other show that lays everything out in chronilogical order without any interaction of thought whatsoever. I now strongly dislike HBO and will most likely cancel my subscription to the program entirely. and on top of cancelling the show, you can not even find the series at any local walmart or blockbuster, that is just rediculous. Thanks a lot now i can not even purchase the series for myself cause i certainly will not purchase it from HBO, who cancelled the show.

One more note on Episode Seven while I'm thinking about it. At the Snug Harbor, the workmen have finished the shuffleboard court. Ramon speaks with them in Spanish as John appears, seen only by Freddy as he stands at the door of his room looking out. Dr. Smith also stands there watching all this unfold. To celebrate the court's completion, having initialed their effort in the cement, Dickstein having drawn the monad symbol, though he doesn't know why, Ramon decides to play his trumpet. He says, "Okay, this is for free ... for nothing." John mimics the trumpet playing. The drum circle sounds in the background. Dr. Smith watches and listens intently as Ramon thanks the workmen: "Gracias, gracias." This is probably when it occurs to the doctor to open a clinic where people can get help for nothing ... for free. Beautiful. -- O-< Primum non nocere. O-<

Yet another thing I loved about this episode was continuing to witness Butchie's inner father. In the previous episodes, we saw Butchie acting in a sort of fatherly way with John, taking him by the hand, guiding him through the streets, and keeping him from being run over in traffic. In this episode, we see Butchie acting that way with Dwayne. At first, Butchie isn't going to go with Dwayne to talk with Shaun about a computer site, but after seeing the look on Dwayne's face, and hearing his tone of voice, he quickly changes his mind. How can one not love Butchie? Butchie and Shaun's scenes in this episode were once again some of my favorites. Being both friends of Bill gives them a place to meet, on neutral ground, and begin working on the lifetime of healing which lies ahead for both of them. "Me being a fuck-up doesn't mean I shouldn't try to give you good advice." If I could embroider, I'd put this on a pillow. -- O-< Primum non nocere. O-<

I love the fact that a suggested alternative title for Episode Seven is "The Halo Effect." This works on so many levels in the episode. Where I find this particularly striking is in Palaka's fever-induced ramblings in which he refers to three very different people as "Ma." Cissy, Barry, and Dr. Smith all have their own existential issues, to put it mildly. Each one of them, in caring for Palaka, is referred to by him as "Ma." When Cissy first sees Palaka, she takes him for a junkie like her "no-good" son. She tries to chase him off. As the scene unfolds, Palaka collapses at her feet just as she is putting the run to the hospital's attorney while proclaiming her reluctant account of how a miracle saved her grandson. She then begins attending to Palaka who in his delirium calls her "Ma", a title she may well think she no longer deserves to hear directed at her in a loving way. Barry is called "Ma" by a delirious Palaka as he likewise practices compassion. The look on Cissy's face as she gazes at Palaka before leaving the room was one of my favorite Rebecca moments. Equally, the look on Barry's face as he comforts Palaka is one of my favorite Matt moments. Dr. Smith is called "Ma" by Palaka as he attends to him in the ice tub. In this case, Palaka, still delirious, is nevertheless comforting the doctor who is fraught with self-doubt. One of the ways in which "The Halo Effect" works in this episode is that in Palaka's case, the compassion shown him by each of three individuals causes him to associate them with his Mother's love. IMPORTANT NEWS: I took a chance and emailed someone who worked closely on JFC. This person did respond by phone this afternoon but asked that I do not disclose their name. I now know that there IS a chance that JFC could become an internet type show or podcast. But we have to show that we have the numbers to support our request. I was given this specific suggestion: "On jmonad's youtube profile he has only 147 subscribers (friends)! So IF there were to be a new video added ONLY 147 would be informed of the release." We need to get lots and lots of people to JOIN YOUTUBE and subscribe to the jmonad page, as well as all the other character video's, i.e., Dickstein, Mitch Yost, Shaun Yost, etc.. WE DO HAVE HBO's ATTENTION... and YES the threads are being read! -- Tammy

I'm with you OMM1. The very day that Curb Your Enthusiasm ends is the day that I am finished with HBO.(Unless,of course, they manage to bring back JFC) I was also a huge fan of Carnivale and have yet to get over the horrible montage(with VO) ending that they crapped on us in the final episode. The ending episode of JFC was far worse. Linc on a megaphone summing up the plot at a pep rally while all of the characters look on is an absolute disgrace and insults the intelligence of the show's audience. At least Carnivale had SOME closure in it's final moments. JFC's ending was a complete and utter artistic failure, a slap in the face to those of us who invested 10 weeks into this otherwise AWESOME show. Shame on HBO. Here is a tip for the goons at HBO who red-light and green-light the shows which make air. If you are not sure about a show surviving into a second season...demand that the creators/writers come up with an ending that provides closure for the audience, even if it means shooting alternate endings. The endings to both Carnivale and JFC were a total disgrace.

Here's an idea...If you are as angry as I am about the cancellation of John From Cincinnati send HBO a message and cancel your service. I am a huge fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm so I won't be cancelling right away but, mark my words, in 9 weeks when CYE is over, I am done with HBO...FOREVER. The loss of CARNIVALE almost sent me over the edge a few years back but the loss of JFC is too much to bear. What really makes me angry is that the final episodes of BOTH of these series were obviously written with the knowledge that the series was to be cancelled and I found the payoff of these final episodes to be appalling. To invest 9 weeks of my life in JFC and have the final episode involve a pep rally where a major character wraps up the plot on a megaphone pisses me off to no end. How HBO sees fit to bring back garbage like Taxicab Confessions and shows about real life whorehouses, season after season, is a mystery that I am no longer willing to subsidize. John From Cincinnati fans UNITE! Vote with your wallets and cancel HBO. After Curb Your Enthusiasm ends, the programming is all crap anyway.

> This episode is full of compassion, love how shaun > gently rubs butchie's head Yes, that was very moving and a genuine reaction from a child with unconditional love for a parent. I just can't get over the amount of critism Greyson received for his acting. It's like the people who make these statements have never been around real people.
