I knew there was something about that message that just did not seem to ring true. It just didn't sound to me like something Stein would say, except for the things he really did. I did forward the snopes link to him. It'll be interesting to see his reply if there is any.

I saw the Dead many times in the seventies including on New Years Eve at Winterland twice. Devotion does not equal involvement in the creation of the event however. With that said, Dead concerts were pretty close to what I am talking about. If you added Hells Angels and lots of acid of course...

Check out Snopes.com. The paragraphs about Graham's daughter were not by Stein, and it's false about the suicide of Spock's son. Whenever I get an impassioned but somewhat improbable email forward like this one (Ben Stein doesn't talk that much about his personal viewpoints, in print), I check it out. Not to say that the question of our secular society isn't worth talking about, but as social problems go, it's the reach of the religious right that is at unprecedented strength, affecting our laws, our elections (remember the "character" issue in the presidential campaign?), our personal access to freedoms, even the science that is taught in schools. Now, that's scary stuff. > > (Dr. Spock's son committed > suicide). This is false, meant to undermine the value of "progressive" child rearing. >

BTW > Skorda turned me onto a pretty good site last night. > http://www.radioparadise.com/ Naah, the 'shrooms just enhanced the experience. That's awesome that you experienced that music in a community atmosphere. No wonder you find modern music a little disappointing. There's not many groups with the kind of vibe the Dead had. I guess Phish, but I'm not really into them. Most of the good stuff takes a little digging. Music is more of an solo thing for me. Headphones and all. I go to shows, but I sure as hell don't feel connected to all the other people there. Most of the time I just want them to shut up and listen. 'Course Radiohead isn't exactly the most uplifting band. Fuckin' awesome though. It sounds like you've got great taste. The Grateful Dead's American Beauty is one of my favorites. I didn't mean that you should throw out your stuff; maybe you should force it on your daughter. I'm just sayin' maybe I can think of stuff to compliment your tastes. I'll think on it. Chances are, each generation is just partial to their own music--except I'm not. Bob is my hero. -- "What Light" Hear If you feel like singing a song And you want other people to sing along Just sing what you feel Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong And if you’re trying to paint a picture But you’re not sure which colors belong Just paint what you see Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong And if you’re strung out like a kite Or stung awake in the night It’s alright to be frightened When there’s a light (what light) There’s a light (one light) There’s a light (white light) Inside of you If you think you might need somebody To pick you up when you drag Don’t loose sight of yourself Don’t let anyone change your bag And if the whole world’s singing your songs And all of your paintings have been hung Just remember what was yours is everyone’s from now on And that’s not wrong or right But you can struggle with it all you like You'll only get uptight Because there’s a light (what light) There’s a light (one light) There’s a light (white light) There’s a light (what light) There’s a light (one light) There’s a light (white light) There’s a light (what light) There’s a light (one light) There’s a light (white light) There’s a light (what light) There’s a light (one light) There’s a light (white light) Inside of you -Jeff Tweedy (Wilco)
