information center for John from cincinnati

I am getting tired of jumping from one thread to another to pick tidbits of info and pertinent links here and there.
This thread is established with only one purpose.
Central Station, info center. Any links, info, please post here. Above the link please include short description of it.
Let's try not to include a lot of personal interaction, it
will distract users, complicate finding necessary information.
Let's combine all info here. If you think this is a bad idea, what else you can suggest to streamline the flow of info?

I think it was pretty obvious that John did not sleep with either of them. There was some ambiguity about it but it was made clear in time. With Kai John did the burning body hardware bit and with Cass he made the movies with monad figures.

But of course, you know what they say, "What happens in "Cincinnati" stays in Cincinnati... ]:)

Interesting interview with Ed O'Neill.

"Well, I did The Big Apple, a David Milch show, and then John from Cincinnati, which was a David Milch show but David Milch is also a very funny guy, as you know. I always found that drama, really good drama has a lot of comedy in it."

I think Zippy didn't get the answer, and that's too bad.
You all know who John is, or at least who he is not.
Say it aloud, please.

You know, I'm still guilty of having only watched JFC once through. Our old, dear friend FF sent me some copies and I am ashamed to say that they are sitting gathering dust. I am thankful though because I know that I will eventually get around to my second viewing (as well as a first viewing of Deadwood).
I do seem to remember that I was a little fuzzy on whether or not John slept with Cass. He spent the night at her apartment and I remember thinking that they might have been together. I'm not the one to ask though with my single viewing. Anyone else think they did? Or am I just imagining what I think I remember?

Oh, and thank you Sven (and Save)...you two always come up with amazing stuff written about this great show!

Some observations about JFC that could make you smile.

http://shammois.blogspot.com/2009/09/john-from-cincinnati.html

"It (JFC) basically plays out like a soap - all these people have their flaws and their problems, but rather than resolving them through the traditional soap methods of affairs, pregnancies, and falling into canals(...)"

OK, we have a phrase about Cissy becoming "big as Leona Helmsey", Mitch and Cass had a (very brief) encounter and Walkara had Cass falling in the ocean from a pier.
Nope, it does not make JFC a soap!

More from the same article.

"John himself seems impervious to harm and charms both surfer Kai and young film-maker (...) Cass into bed, whilst surfing promoter (who may be the devil, or may not, and doesn't know himself) Link Stark pursues his own agenda, and shacks up with Sean's hitherto absent Mom, who happens to be a porn queen.

It's a real stretch trying to tie the apocalypse, the second coming and surfing altogether, but John From Cincinnati pulls it off in the main, largely thanks to an excellent cast and some healthy doses of humour. John himself is always entertaining - speaking as he does only in the phrases that he's heard, he drives people up the wall whilst somehow endearing himself to them simultaneously."

That's written with humor, only John didn't charm Kai and Cass into bed, or I completely misunderstood the whole concept of JFC. Though Link as a devil.... that's the soap opera...

September 23 will present a choice between Ed O'Neill in "Modern Family" and Brian Van Holt in "Cougar Town".

I think "Modern Family" would be a better pick, but it's just a hunch.

Here's the best clip with O'Neill I've found. I don't know who's writing his parts, but it's the O'Neil we love. The sarcasm, wariness and underlying kindness make his character a distant cousin of Bill Jacks. Or may be not so distant.

Brian Van Holt, only 2 seconds on the screen, in the first half minute. What previews I saw of this show didn't impress me, it looked tacky, but I'll watch it if there is less flat sex jokes and more of Van Holt.

You can always DVR ot TiVo it.

If you are up for a trip to Philadelphia next spring, let's say, at the end of April, there'll be a chance to listen to David Milch.

He and the two others, namely Joyce Carol Oates and Susan Howe, will "participate in a course, readings, and discussions with the Penn community", as their university paper reports here.

May be someone will make a video recording of the lectures and share it on YouTube.

Yes, Sven, I agree that this thread will be the best place for "where are they now" information. Unfortunate but true.

May be this thread should be renamed as "Where they are now"? The news about JFC had almost dried out, and certainly, new shows and movies are being made; actors, JFC alumni, land new roles, and we wish them all the best, and still remember their peculiar, lovable, strange characters they brought to life in "John from Cincinnati".

Rebecca De Mornay just recently was cast as (big surprise) a sadistic Mother in a remake of a slasher "Mother's Day".

Quote from the original article posted in Hollywood Reporter:

"The part echoes the evil nanny De Mornay played in 1992's "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle", a comparison not lost on the film's makers.

"Every time you look at (Rebecca), she is on fire, and to take her to this level, which is like her role in 'Hand That Rocks the Cradle' times a thousand, is exciting," said Bousman, who has directed three "Saw" films. "(The character) is not some Freddy Krueger or Jason, so it was important for me to get a real actress."

Let's hope the role will be more than a stereotype, it depends on the screenplay.

She is a real actress - remember Cissy's terrified eyes in the scene with the gun, or the same blue eyes lighted by compassion toward feverish, delirious Palaka.... oh, I digress.

....to be continued, because Google "keeps an eye on them".

Edited to correct. De Mornay has a role in a movie that's being filmed and slated for 2010, "Flipped", about two teenagers.

You may want to look it up, interesting list of works that are - in the author's view - failures, misses, or simply misunderstood by the audience. Fascinating collection in itself, including literature (Pynchon, King), music (Nirvana, Mos Def, Lennon) and movies (Heaven's Gate, Kafka, etc.) The choice is arbitrary, as most lists are, and there could be as well 10 or 30 samples.

Second on the list is JFC.

"Over most of his time in show business, David Milch did one thing and did it well: grandiose, eloquent cop dramas. The guy broke in on Hill Street Blues, then worked his way up to co-creator of NYPD Blue, which set him for life. From there, he headed to HBO, patron saint of TV auteurs, to create the critically beloved Deadwood, which was killed off after three seasons in a dispute between HBO and Paramount. Milch then channeled all his pet obsessions, his penchant for obtuseness, and his bitterness at the Deadwood situation into the ?surf noir? John From Cincinnati, which ended up being a loose retelling of the coming of Christ, shot through with esoteric philosophizing, opaque performances, and dialogue so convoluted that viewers had to listen three or four times to even figure out what was going on. John could be brilliant in patches, but it was too head-scratchingly strange for most viewers. Not even a small-but-rabid following or Milch?s insistence that it was all about how God wanted to prevent a genocide could curb viewer indifference."

"Small but rabid", that's about us, I guess. 3.5 mil is not small, I think.

Don't know if some are still interested in reading reviews of JFC, the BB is chock full of deep interpretations.
I keep an alert "on" for the news anyways.

http://www.videovista.net/reviews/aug09/johnfcin.html

This article is in parts convincing, in parts infuriating, see for yourself.

I found the concept of "sand box" plot the one worth exploring.

"What most struck me about John From Cincinnati was its incredibly resemblance to Deadwood. Deadwood was a series that was unconstrained by what one would traditionally think of as plot. It functioned primarily as a kind of sandbox with the characters entering the town and then simply being allowed to bounce off of each other directed only by their psychological state. Sometimes the right series of collisions would result in a re-orientation of a character's psychological state, at other times some event would intercede upon the town from the outside, thereby prompting a more generalised process of change. As an approach to writing it was not only incredibly bold, it also resulted in a series that was completely character-based and which was not only true to its characters (in a way that the likes of Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles systematically failed to be), but which also provided real depth of characterisation. John From Cincinnati was clearly written with the same methods."

Back once said something almost word for word, that he just likes to bounce characters off each other. Waxon said that as long as there's a characters development, the story is alive.

Any thoughts?
