Salesman: (to Jake) Oh, so I have to know what I mean before I can have a feeling? Do I have to know that you値l understand me? Do you have to know you値l understand before you値l listen? This is one of the most important lines delivered in the entire season. I'm pretty sure that this was directly aimed at all the critic, doubter and asshats that refuse to watch a show because they "don't understand it". Also, a brilliant piece of casting, using Peter Jason for this part. -- CalamityDan.com - Photos, files and stuff

I took Country to be a reference to how "green" John is. That John is so limited in his ability to communicate versus the "Father's" ability to blend in easily (like how he tells Manuel that and that). Like a country boy who has been in the city a short time, John has yet to learn how things work. Just a thought... -- Jay The Foxhole Podcast

The first time that I heard this line, Dan, it hit me that it sounded like he was talking to all these people who come here whining about how the show sucks because they don't understand it. > This is one of the most important lines delivered in > the entire season. I totally agree. > Also, a brilliant piece of casting, using Peter Jason > for this part. Yup. Peter Jason was perfect for the role. I am still scratching my head about him calling John "Country", though. - Was it because John was in a plaid shirt? - Was is because John had been sent to a small-town section of the country?...Instead of a City? -- "I try to stay eligible."

Dan, I totally agree. On the subject of asshat critics, and as a disclaimer I don't actually know any TV critics, but you can see how this show goes completely against the common practice of their art. They want to be able to skim watch a couple of episodes, and make a profound generalization about the show. Damn Milch for making them think; there's no check-box for that! The scary thing is that lots of people listen to them, and base their watching decision on that alone. I have seen very few of these critics who trashed the show after 3 episodes bother to follow up with a subsequent review (I guess there's 8 hours of other important crap to be skimmed every day) It still boggles my mind that you wouldn't at least be intrigued by the first 1 to 3 episodes. they had their hearts set on a convenient "pretentious" label, meaning anything they can't be bothered to think about, or perhaps a simple "I don't want to go out on a limb" safety net; better to trash something than be found in a minority even if you do like it. As an aside I happen to really like House (mostly for the acting/characters of Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard), however Hugh Laurie summed it up nicely early on in an interview with something like: "well it's pretty much 4 acts: house gets it wrong 3 times, and right once". Thank you Milch for a great show in JFC, and f*ck the critics, or at least lets see if we can ween HBO off their teets
